Birth Record of Children Born out of Wedlock

I have hit a brick wall in obtaining my grandmother's birth record. It seems that she was born out of wedlock in 1906. Apparently there is a law on the books that restricts access to certain records of birth between the years of 1841 and 1997. I need to go through probate in order to get this record and as I live in Chicago this is not possible. Has anyone out there ever run into this type of problem? If so, how did you resolve the issue? Thank you.

5th NY Cavalry, Co. D from Mass.

I Have just read through most of these threads looking for any similar story to my ggg uncle William (Mc)Sheehy. I know there are more out there, so in case somebody is looking here someday........
William Shehea lived in Holyoke, Mass. and signed up for the 5th NY Cav. in Springfield, Mass. I spent quite a few years looking for his records because I was "stuck" on just looking within the Mass. regiments. I have since found out that Co. D consisted mostly of men from Mass. and Conn. I now have his military record and his pension file. What a motherlode! The only reason why I finally found his regiment in NY is because his name was on the Whitinsville GAR list along with his regiment. He was 19 when he signed up in 1861 as a Pvt. and he mustered out at the end of the war in 1865 as a Sgt. He was wounded twice. Shot in the face once and a sabre wound to his hip. He was a prisoner of war for what looks like just a few weeks in 1863.
I hope my story helps some others to continue their searches even outside of the State of interest. My question involves how to find out the circumstances over his short internment and are there lists of prisoners of war for the different prisons? William was at Libby Prison and neither his military file nor the pension file gives any details.
If anyone can help, thanks.

Monica

I have a pension file number for whom I suspect is my GGrandfather: Civil war, E, 32nd Mass Infantry, No. Pension Cerficate 947965. James H. Allen. d. 1900, Chelsea Soldier's Home, MA.

Is the only way forward though to pay the bucks and make a request via the National Archives or is there some other way such as an LDS film that might have the same thing? There are so many LDS films an no cross reference, I can't figure out which to use, and the NA is pretty pricy but may be the only way. Any of you Civil war experts able to suggest the best path to follow? Thanks.

I am trying to find out if my gggrandfather fought in the civil war (union side). Family lore has it that he served in the civil war, but in place of someone else. He was apparently paid $300.00 to take another man's place. I have no idea how to research this possibility...would his records be under the other man's name, was a record kept of soldiers who were serving for others? His eldest known child was born in 1865, Boston MA so he was definitely back in MA by then and probably 1864 when I estimate he married, although I have not found a marriage record for him. Henry Morse was born circa 1832, Worcester MA (parents as yet unknown). He would have been approx. 29-33 during the civil war. He married Jane Curtin (b. circa 1837, Ireland, dau. of John and Catherine). Henry died 1872, his wife pre-deceased him. Would he have had a pension and to whom would it have gone to--his children were orphaned in 1872, upon the death of their parents. The family has thought that he served in the navy, this may be conjecture because his civilian work was that of seaman. I don't know exactly where he is buried--he died of smallpox and is believed to be buried on one of the uninhabited islands in Boston Harbor (haven't been able to confirm this). Can anyone offer any suggestion of how I can go about proving or disproving this theory?
Marie

I am a Civil War reenactor. Our group portrays "Bigelow's Battery", the 9th MA Light Arillery. I am looking for any information about men who served with this battery during the Civil War. Most of them were from boston, MA and the surrounding area. The battery first saw action at Gettysburg. They played an integral part of the battle on the 2nd day at the Trossle Barn. There are 3 monuments in Gettysburg honoring them. They went on to fight in other major battles and were only miles away from Appamattox Court House when Lee surrendered. They all mustered out of service at the end of the war in 1865. I would greatly appreciate any help in finding out about these men and in keeping their memories and histories alive.

Would anyone known what Congressional district Boston, MA would have been in during 1863? I would like to send for a copy of my gg grandfather's draft record and this is required information.

I understand there is a booklet called "Civil War Draft records" by Nancy Justus Morebeck. Perhaps someone would have this booklet and could look up the information.

Thank you very much for any help I receive.
Janice Cassani

Timothy Hurley - Abington, MA

Recently, while decorating my wife’s family’s grave in Rockland, MA, my shovel struck a buried GAR grave marker. The only likely occupant of the grave site to which this belonged would be Timothy Hurley (b. Ireland – 1834, d. Abington, MA, Aug 12, 1908). There is no living person who can remember whether he served in the Civil War.

Timothy Hurley later married Mary Curly (abt 1871), settled in Abington, MA and worked as a bootmaker/shoemaker. His widow, Mary, died in Taunton, MA in December 1913.

I am hoping that some kind soul will be able to sort out the several Timothy Hurley’s (and one Timothy Hurle or Hurlie) who served in Massachusetts Civil War units, and help me determine which one is my wife’s great grandfather. To my knowledge, there were Timothy Hurleys in each of the following: 1st Mass. Inf. (Co. D); 2d Mass. Inf. (Co. B); 11th Mass. Inf. (Co. C); 48th Mass. Inf. (Militia). A Timothy “Hurle” or “Hurlie” was in the 1st Mass. Cav. (Co. A); and a Timothy “Harley” or “Hurley” was in the 1st Mass. Inf. (Co. I). In addition three possible Hurleys (Timothy, Timothy J., and Timothy T.) were enlisted men in the Union Navy.

Does anyone have access to records that would show these individuals’ birth dates/places, home at the time of enlistment, or other information that would narrow my search?

GAR and FLT marker on grave?

My 2nd great grand-uncle William H. Shurtleff, has a marker in the ground next to his grave and etched into his headstone. It is a double or triple linked chain with the letters F L T in each link. Does anyone know what this is?
Also has a GAR marker post 208 in Wareham, but I cannot find any service records for him. William Shurtleff was born abt 3/1847 and died of T.B. in 1/1880. He was married to Henrietta A. Hall and had at least two children , Harrison S. Shurtleff and Grace E. Shurtleff(Borden). Any answers about the triple link chain and FLT would be much appreciated.

Respectfully,

Candace M. Corthell

Help finding statue

There is a Mass symbol of a bent arm holding a sword that appears of the state flag. There was a monument in Gettysburg to the 11th Mass Infantry that fought there during the Civil War. Its top was a granite arm and sword sculpture. The one in Gettysburg was vandalized and broken to pieces. Has anyone seen a similar granite statue in Mass? They need a duplicate to make a cast to repair the monument. Please email me. The 11th Mass was a Boston regiment from what I understand so some descendents might know of where a copy of the statue is. Thank you for your help

Anyone out there who has an ancestor who was in Company B of the 34th MA....there is a beautiful framed color lithograph roster available at Coffman's Country Antiques Market in Great Barrington, MA. The dealer is offering it for $245. The roster does have a slight tear(fold damage)but is otherwise in beautiful condition. It has been treated to ward off acid damage. I will not post the phone for obvious reasons...if anyone is seriously interested they can find the # easily. I am not the dealer and am only hoping that the piece can find a home with a descendant of a member of this regiment.

My gggrandfather's name was Edwin Taylor (1848-1881). On his tombstone is written: Co. E 3rd Reg. U.S. Art. There has been some question whether or not he was in the Civil War. I typed in his name on the Civil War Pension Index and there was an Edwin Taylor. It was rather difficult for me to read. My question is: there is a name, Witherell Ida M. (and a Gd.) after it. The date, if I read it correctly, is 1891 Aug. 27. I know his wife, Ida M., did remarry a Fred Witherell. Would she have been entitled to anything? This is very confusing to me. Perhaps it is not the right Edwin Taylor! Any suggestions or help would be appreciated.

My Great Great Grandfather, Llewellyn L. Craig served in the civil war as 4th Lt. in the Mass. 6th Infantry, Company D. He was injured when a train carrying his regiment to Washington was attacked by a sessionist mob in Baltmore. Resently, I was able to have someone go to the Cemetery where he is buried and obtain a photo of his tombstone for me. ( See Attached Photo ) In Front of his tombstone, looks like a post of some sort, in the ground, looks like an Engle maker. I can not make our what this says, but was wondering if anyone might be able to tell me if this Engle maker in the photo has anything to do with his Serve in the Civil War. Any help would be ever so kind of you. Thank you.

Sincerely,
Rebecca Garrlentini

Hello: I must try to find my husband's Wilson family. Someone contacted family years ago doing the genealogy, so we know its done and out there. The cousins remember stories from "Pop" that a great uncle, Sam Wilson, was Saddle maker in Civil War and maybe he was from Lowell, Massachusetts. Pop's line went to Ontario, Canada he was born 1884 Toronto. Word is our first Wilson's, circa 1700's -1800's, were from the Gunn Clan, Inverness Scotland and "brothers" or "father/sons" had to "leave in a hurry" due to a dispute over "ownership of some sheep". Does anyone recognize this. Thanks Cherie and David

The above name was on a prisoner exchange roll dated February 19th, 1862. I did some checking and it would appear that this list was from the Battle of Ball's Bluff. I have no further information.

I have been trying to find something about a George F. Lewis. I have a small bible that belonged to him. In it it says"George F. Lewis, U. S. Receiving Ship Ohio, Jan 1, 1864, Charlestown, Massachusetts." I have written to the National Archives and they found nothing on him. I was able to find a George F. Lewis in the 42nd Regiment, Mass. Infantry (100 days), Militia. There is another listing with the same name in the 5th Regiment. I do not know if they are the same person. I would love to find something about this man. Having his bible is very special and it would be nice to know what might have become of him. If anyone has any suggestions I would be most happy to hear them.
