CIVIL WAR MYSTERY (DEATH! DOUBLE MARRIAGE! SCANDAL! HELP!)

Okay- here's one for all of you- tell me what you think>

Cast of characters:

Minerva Spalding (1832-1920)
John Dillon (1823, b: Ireland- 1878?? Michigan)
Rezin Wright (1843, b: Michigan- 1873 Chicago)

Minerva Spalding married Irishman John Dillon in Michigan (can't find marriage record yet) in the early 1850's. Dillon enlisted in the Michigan 14th Infantry, Company G in Port Huron, MI on Dec 21, 1861.

BUT- According to the HISTORY OF ST. CLAIR COUNTY book: "Mrs. Dillon (Spalding), who was born in Lockport, New York, now resides in Port Huron, from which city her first husband (John Dillon) enlisted for service in the Civil war, during which struggle he received injuries which caused blindness and later death. Her second husband was also a Civil war solider."

According to the Dibean Marriage Record List:
3 July 1862, Port Huron
Rinson (Rezin) Wright, 21, Columbus (MI)
Mary Dillow (Dillon), 30, Port Huron

Rezin Wright enlisted in the Michigan Fourth Calvary, Company A on July 22, 1862.

After the war, he went to Chicago after the Great Fire, contracted small pox and died in 1873 and is buried in Graceland Cemetery.

John Dillon, I have no idea what actually happened to.

Doing searches, I found a John Dillon, born 1825, who was wounded at Stone River, TN and who ends up in Detroit after the war and dies March 2 1876 and is buried in Elmwood Cemetery.

The Battle of Stone River was December 31 1862 to January 2 1863.

So if this is the same guy, he was injured after she got married to Rezin Wright, the other soldier... !!!

I'm so lost...lol

Do any of you have any thoughts? Or suggestions?

This is the fun part of family history no doubt...Hoping some Civil War historians here may have some ideas or places to look...

Thank you!!- Mike in Cleveland

Looking for the "group" picture taken of our descendant, WILLIAM R. SWICK, b. NY est. 1828, d. April 1864, buried Chalmette Cemetery, New Orleans. His unit was the 3rd Michigan Cavalry, Co M.

I am not sure what those group pictures were called, but I know many CW units had a large poster-sized picture taken with each member's picture and the name of the unit on each.
Michigans 19th infantry

hi i cant find records for the 19th infantry..i did get this information... im looking for a williams born 1841, i belive his frist name was burton..he would of signed up in milton, cass county michigan.. does anyone know where i can find his record..thank you
19th Regiment Michigan Infantry 1862-5
The Nineteenth Regiment was assigned to the Second Congressional District, to be recruited in the counties of Branch, St.Joseph, Cass, Berrien, Kalamazoo, Van Buren and Allegan. It's camp was at Dowagiac, with the Honorable Henry Gilbert as the commandant of the camp, who was charged with the organization of the regiment.

Recruiting was commenced on July 15,1862, and was completed on September 5,1862. The Regiment broke camp on September 14th., and under the command of Colonel Gilbert, took its route to Cincinnati with 995 officers and men. It was assigned to the 1st. division of the Army of the Ohio, and was stationed in Kentucky during the months of October, November and December.

)n January 1,1863, the Regiment was stationed in Danbury, KY and belonged to Col. Colburn's Brigade, Baird's Division, Army of the Kentucky. This army having been transferred to the Department of the Cumberland, as a reserve Corp, the Nineteenth moved with the Brigade to Nashville, where it arrived on February 7th., proceeding thence to Franklin. On the 4th. of March, with 600 cavalry and 200 additional infantry, it took part with its Brigade in a reconnaissance in force. After a march of 4 miles, skirmishing commenced with Confederate scouts and advanced pickets, but with the southerners retiring, the Brigade encamped, the Nineteenth having lost one man wounded in the skirmishing. The march having been resumed on the following day, the Confederates were met in force at Thompkin's Station, nine miles from Franklin.

The Nineteenth, with others, fight stubbornly against immense odds, attack after attack is repulsed, struggling nobly without hope, defeat and capture inevitable, they surrender: the Colonel offers his sword; it is refused; the Confederate commander says, "An officer so brave, with a Regiment so gallant, deserves to keep his sword."

This was a very sanguinary engagement. At times the contest was severe and the fighting terrific.

Three charges were made by the South and gallantly repulsed. In one charge the Nineteenth captures the colors of the 4th. Mississippi and several prisoners. After an engagement of five hours their ammunition became exhausted, and the entire force surrendered, excepting a few, who succeeded in making their escape. The rebel force proved to be the entire cavalry of General Bragg's army, 18,000 strong under the command of General Van Dorn. The Nineteenth went into action with 512 officers and men, of which number 113 were killed and wounded. Those of the Regiment that had escaped, also those that were left behind in Franklin, were sent to Brentwood, organized with the remaining fragments of the Brigade, and placed under the command of an officer of another regiment. This force was soon surrendered by that officer to the Confederate General Forrest without firing a shot, on the 25th. of March. The enlisted men were soon paroled and sent north. The commissioned officers to be exchanged on the 25th. of May.

The Regiment was reorganized at Camp Chase, OH, and on the 8th. of June 1863, left Columbus, arriving at Nashville on the 11th. It took part in the advance on Tullahoma in June. On the 23rd. of July the Regiment was ordered to Murfreesboro, and went upon garrison duty inside the fortifications. Company D of the Nineteenth, commanded by Lieutenant F. Baldwin, numbering 50 men, having been stationed at a stockade on the Nashville and Chattanooga Railroad, at Stone River, were attacked on the 5th. of October, by a force of Confederate cavalry and artillery under General Wheeler, but after a most gallant, however hopeless defence, having lost six in wounded, surrendered. The prisoners were immediately robbed of all possessions and promptly released.

October 25, 1863 the Regiment, then in the 2nd. Brigade, 3rd. division, 20th. Corp, wa ordered to McMinnville, TN, where it was employed in the construction of fortifications. The Regiment garrisoned the post at McMinnville until April 21, 1864. It here built several forts, constructed a railroad bridge, repaired a locomotive that the Confederates had tried to destroy when they abandoned this place, put a saw mill in operation, which made lumber for blockhouses and other construction and other purposes. April 30th., the Regiment, which had been ordered to join its division, arrived at Lookout Valley, whence it moved on the 3rd. of May, with the army, then entering the Georgia Campaign.

The Regiment made a demonstration on Buzzard's Roost, but was not engaged, then marched through Snake Creek Gap, to take part in the battle of Resaca, GA on May 15th. In ths action the Regiment participated in a charge on, with the capture of, a Confederate battery. It's loss in this charge was 14 killed and 66 wounded.

On the 19th, the Regiment made another charge at Cassville, losing 1 killed, 4 wounded. They were engaged again at New Hope Church on the 25th., losing an additional 5 killed, 47 wounded. On the 10th. of June they were engaged yet another time at Golgotha Church, losing 4 killed, 9 wounded. Then again engaged at Culp's Farm, with another 13 wounded. Following up on the retreat of the Confederates from this position, along with Kenesaw Mountain, they crossed the Chattahoochie River to participate in the repulse of the Confederates at Peach Tree Creek on the 25th. of July, losing 4 killed, 33 wounded. During the Seige of Atlanta, the Regiment suffered 2 killed, 6 wounded.

The Regiment then fell back with the rest of its Corp to Tanner's Ferry, then advanced on Atlanta, only to find it evacuated, there to remain on garrison until October 30, 1864.

Then on the 15th. of November, the Nineteenth, in the 2nd. Brigade,3rd. Division, 20th. Corp advanced with General Sherman on the March to the Sea, when after a long and fatiguing march, destroying much property and provisions, reached Savannah on the 21st. of December. Heading north the Regiment crossed the Cape Fear River, then confronted the Confederates at Averysboro, participating in an heroic charge, carrying the works, capturing the artillery emplaced there, losing 4 killed, with 15 wounded.

After the fall of Bentonville, and the surrender of General Johnston, the Regiment was marched, with its Corp, to Alexandria, VA, arriving there on the 18th. of May, to participate in the Grand Review in Washington on the 24th., thence to Jackson, MI on the 13th., where it was paid off and disbanded.

During their term of federal service, they were engaged at:

Thompkin's Station,Tn/ Nashville and Chattanooga Railroad/ Resaca,Ga/ Cassville,Ga/ New Hope Church,Ga/ Golgotha,Ga/ Culps's Farm,Ga/ Peach Tree Creek,Ga/ Siege of Atlanta,Ga/ Savannah,Ga/ Averysboro,NC/ Bentonville,NC

Total Enrollment--1238..... Killed in Action--54..... Died of Wounds--41..... Died of Disease--142

Total Casualty Rate........19.2%

To anyone that could help with my search.

I have the following records (for the same person):

Name: Jerome B. Jones
Company: F
Unit: 8 Michigan Infantry.
Rank - Induction: Private
Rank - Discharge: Private
Allegiance: Union
Notes: Jones, George B. Jones
Company: F
Unit: 8 Michigan Infantry.
Rank - Induction: Private
Rank - Discharge: Private
Allegiance: Union
Notes: Jones, George B. P.
Source Citation: Box: 545;Extraction: 21; Record: 2542

Note that the middle initials are different and that in the source citations, the record numbers are 2541 and 2542 but I believe that they are the same person.

Now that I have this what information can I obtain on Jerome Jones using the above information? I can't seem to find him in the 1870 or the 1880 census. His wife (Phebe Jones nee McCormick) states that she is a widow in the 1900 census. Are there Civil War pension records available to look at online? If you served, did you receive a pension? I have no idea what his war record was ie. when/where he mustered in and when/where he was discharged, what battles he fought and what happened to him after the war. Did the government keep track of Civil War veterans?

Any help at all in pointing me to what records are available, where/how I can obtain them, and what happened to Jerome Jones would be gratefully appreciated!

John

I am searching for any information on the families of Gustav Kast and John Ruehle who served in The Michigan 2nd Infantry -Company A , where Gustav served as Second Lieutenant and John served as 1st Lieutenant. John & Gustav were related by marriage - Gustav Kast was married to Caroline Ruehle who was a 1st Cousin to John V. Ruehle, Jr.. The father of John Ruehle, Jr ( and Uncle by marriage of Gustav Kast) also served in the Michigan Infantry -- and is listed as unassigned. There is also a Martin Ruehle who served in the 2nd Infantry - Company H. and a George Ruehle who served in the Mi Infantry - Company K. They may be relatives- but I have not yet found a connection.

Gustav then served as Captain in the the MI 16th Infantry - Company K. John Ruehle served later in the MI 16th Infantry., Company F as a Lieutenant Colonel.

We have found a photo of Harvey John Brown - his daughter married the son of Gustav Kast -- Gustavus Kast. He is in what appears to be a Scouts (Civil War) Uniform With Binoculars - he also ties into this family by his daughters marriage. We have been unable to locate any service records for Harvey?? He may not have enlisted in Michigan?? It seems they all may have known each other during the Civil War.
I have a photo of Gustav in uniform -but would like a photo of the John Ruehles if any has one or knows where I might look. I would like to connect with any of the above mentioned family members and share info.
Thanks!! J. Warren

My great-grandparents are Alexander and Elizabeth Fish Thompson of White Oak, Ingham, Michigan. I have been able to find out a lot about Elizabeth's family but nothing about Alexander's family. Not long ago I sent for one of Elizabeth's brother's Civil War file. The brother's name was Elbridge Gerry Fish. In Elbridge's Civil War file is a letter that Elbridge wrote to Elizabeth and Alexander. (The reason the letter is in there, is Elbridge is using the letter as proof of Civil War service.) Anyway, the letter, written from Fort Leavenworth, Kansas on June 10, 1865, partially reads as follows:

"I have some sad inteligence for you if you have not heard it already. Your brother Henry is no more. He was kicked by a horse in May and died the 9 or 10 near Petersburg or City Point. I forget which. I have seen the horse that kicked him, also the one he used to ride. My informant tells me he was a good soldier. He was hit in the leg. I have not time to give particulars now......"

Since he says "your brother Henry" I know he is talking about Alexander's brother, as if it was Elbridge's and Elizabeth's brother, he would say "our brother". I also know that Elbridge and Elizabeth didn't have a brother named Henry. So this letter is the only clue I have about a family member of Alexander's. In Civil War databases, I found a soldier named Henry Thompson who served in the 1st Michigan Calvary. He died from non-combat injuries/disease on May 15, 1865 and is buried in City Point, VA. So I am really, pretty sure that this is the brother named Henry that is referred to in the letter. I have sent for his Civil War file but can hardly wait until it comes. Does anyone know anything about this soldier, Henry Thompson? Can anyone tell me in more detail what the Michigan 1st Calvary was doing in May, 1865?

I am looking for records of John H. Hill and Martin Hill (brothers), they fought for the union with a Michigan unit. They were born in New York but by 1860 they were living in Lapeer Co. Michigan with their Parents. They should have been in their late teens early twenties when they enlisted. I know that John Hill married a Cynthia Skinner in 1872 and Martin Hill married a Betsy Bennett. I would appricate any information on these two brothers, for example what units they were in and perhaps pension records if possible.Thank You

I am interested in locating an image origianl or copy (digital) of Sgt. Major William A. Smith. Smith was from Adrian, Michigan he became Sgt. Major of the 17th Michigan Infantry on May 12, 1865. The image I am looking for shows Smith in a four button sack coat with Sgt. Major chevrons. I am also looking for any information related to the Grand Jubilee and homecoming for soldiers held at Grass Lake, Michigan on August 3, 1865. I would be very interested in diary or letter accounts related to this event (copies are fine).

Hi Folks,

I'm the co-author of a new book called "Plenty of Blame to Go Around: Jeb Stuart's Controversial Ride to Gettysburg." It contains the most modern and detailed accounts of Stuart's ride, including all the fights and skirmishes along the way - notably the battles at Hanover and Hunterstown between elements of Stuart's cavalry and Custer's Michigan Cavalry Brigade. If you're interested, see our website at http://www.stuartsride.com.

We have many, many accounts from Michigan cavalrymen's diaries and letters included in it.

J.
Folks:

I'd sent away for the Civil War Pension Application* of my g-g-grandfather Hiram Husted who served in Co. D, 9th Michigan Infantry. I received a large packet of materials reflecting a lengthy investigation into the validity of his pension claim for poor eyesight, rheumatism, and chronic diarrhea. Amongst these materials were four depositions by former comrades in arms of Hiram's taken in December of 1890. I've scanned and posted them as some of you may be interested in reading them.
I am interested in any information on John Ryan Blackmer and his brother David C. Blackmer they fought with the 12th Inf. Co K. and David died in Little Rock, Ark. It states from disease but I believe he was injuried lifting a wagon. I also have a picture of this company if any one is interested. I would like to donate a copy of it to the Michigan state military sites but not sure how to do that. Their brother Daniel Rufus also fought for Micigan but I do not know what regiment. Thank you Barbara

I am trying to find out more information on my G-G-Grandfather, Leiutanant Michael Dempsey. He was noted in Colonel Morrow's report on Gettysburgh for bravery. He was wounded 3 times including Gettysburgh. He is noted in a Detroit free PRess article as "our correspondent" on the latest fightings (Gettysburgh).

The most interesting thing about him was he was Dismissed 6 months before the end of the war ... not discharged ... but Dismissed. He is the only person in the 24th Michigan roster of Civil War veterans who was "Dismissed." Does anyone have any knowledge on how to check on the why of this. I'm not naieve. I assume it was for something bad.

Need info on Israel J. Barry, 20th Reg., Michigan Infantry

My ggf Israel John Barry served in the following Pennsylvania Regiments during Civil War: 13th Reg., Pa. Infantry (3 months, 1861); 102nd Reg., Pa. Infantry 1861-64. On the National Park Service's Soldiers & Sailors database, there is an Israel J. Barry who served with the Michigan Infantry, 20th Reg. I need to rule out if this was my ggf. I've heard that some Michigan regiments were aligned with Pa. regiments and I'm thinking he may have signed up with Michigan after his Pennsylvania service was up. If anyone on the Michigan list could shed light on whether there were two Israel J. Barry's (one in Michigan in addition to my ggf), I would be very grateful.

Carol Movahed

The Sarah M. W. Sterling Tent #3 of the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, 1861-1864, active in the Detroit metropolitan area, issues an invitation for membership to all direct lineal blood descendants of those who served in the Union Army, Navy, Marines or Revenue Cutter Service during the Civil War, 1861-1865.

The advantages of membership are many and include regular meetings with women who share the same interests and have a common heritage, the opportunity to hold an office, attend State and National Conventions as a delegate, and most importantly, honor the memories of our brave ancestors who fought to save the United States Flag. His father supposidly also faught in the Civil War. I believe it was his brother David rather than his uncle David (as familly thought) that was also in the 12 division. I am new to this so do not know how I get information from the person who had rooms full of information. Thank you.

I am trying to compile a list of Michigan's dead & mortally wounded from Chickamauga. The 22nd Inf. was most heavily engaged and terribly cut-up here on 9/20/1863. I have only found 7 names of about 58 men listed as killed or fatally shot while serving in Whitaker's brigade, Steedman's division. Could any of you direct me to sources or otherwise help? I have Pvts Blauvelt, Birdsall & Gay, Sgt. Durkee, Cpl. Stansell, Capt. Snell, and Will Smith. Help with the 11th and 21st Michigan would also be appreciated, though their casualties were smaller and my sources better. Thank you, SJB

My GGGreatgrandfather, Robert Alexander enlisted in the 8th Mich. Cavalry, Company E, as a sargeant Nov. 4th, 1862. He enlisted with other men from Dryden, MI on the same date. He mustered out of Mt. Clemens, Jan. 20th, 1863. He was captured during battle in Athens, TN. He was imprisoned at either Spottsylvania or Pittsylvania Courthouse,VA and died of camp fever Dec. 6th, 1863. I am looking for any local info. such as photos, letters, and the like that may or may not exist. Also looking for his burial place if it is known. Probably VA. I have papers from Nat'l Arch. that tel the day of his death but no burial location. One other thing I am wondering is why his name does not appear on the Union Roll of Honor?
I have the CD from Family Tree Maker and there is no mention of him. I hope there is someone that can help me.

After one month, I received my gr gr grandfathers pension papers. I ordered the least expensive packet because I really didn't know what I would get.
I did get some new information from the papers. The death date and marriage date and location.
I would like to know more about the family of John H. Dewey.
I would like to know about when and where he was born. I would like to know more about his parents.
I don't remember the names of the different papers that one can order. This is the first time I have ordered any pension papers.
Should I go a head and order something else to get other information or could this be it?
I appreciate any help
Thank you,
Cindy (o:

George Westrip Co C 23rd Inf Michigan died on Sultana

Help!

My Great Great Grandfather was George F. Westrip. He was drafted into Co. C of the 23rd Infantry on September 28, 1864 per all records obtained from the National Archives. He is listed as sick and did not make a single roll call. I know that he was captured at Cassville Georgia on May 23, 1864 (along with Edwin H. Ammerman, James Parmelee, Henry West, and James Young) and was imprisoned at Andersonville (he is listed on the prison records). He was then transfered to Cahaba Prison and was later paroled at Camp Fisk, where he had the misfortune of obtaining a place on the Sultana. He apparently died in the explosion and no body was found (that I can find a record of).

I suspect that the records per the National Archives is a mandatory re-inlistment since he was a POW at the time. However, I have had no luck in finding any other enlistment records for him. I suspect he was drafted for two years when the company was originally formed in 1862.

If anyone can help me track down George Westrip's military records, or has an idea of where to find him, please contact me. Your help will be greatly appreciated.

George is listed in Berry's book as George Westhorpe. Other's have him listed as George Worstup. Still other's have him as Woostrip.

In addition, I'd like to get a copy of the 23rd Michigan Adjutant General's Report, page 117. I understand the George is listed on that page.

Hello,

Is it possible to find where a pension payment was mailed to and when it eventually stopped due to death or re-marriage? My 2nd great granduncle Andrew Jackson Capen died in Salisbury prison in 1865 and his wife Rosannah (Smith)Capen claimed his pension in 1865, in about 1882 his father Nahum Whitcomb Capen tried to claim the pension saying Rosannah had re-married. Apparently his claim was rejected. I cannot find her in any census records and I was hoping that I might be able to find where the pension was going and when it stopped, the pension file I have for Andrew doesn't show either.

Any advice on where to turn to next would be appreciated.

Mike Pratt
Lansing, MI

My gg grandfather's brother James Shannon served with Dygert's Sharpshooters, attached to the Michigan 16th Infantry Regiment, from 1861 to 1865. He lost an eye in an accident in late 1864. Based on records of the battles the MI 16th were in, it seems the loss of the eye occurred other than in a battle. Does anybody know when/how it occurred?

BTW, James mined for gold in Colorado after the war, before moving to Buffalo, NY. He is buried in his native Ontario, Canada.

I've been searching for information or pictures or anything about my great-grandfather - Daniel Livingway. I found that he did serve in the MI 5th Infantry, I think Regiment E. I've asked aunts and uncles to check for papers they may have, but no luck. I'm hoping a long lost cousin may have something or someone with a picture of his group. Something with him in uniform. He was wounded in the leg and carried a bullet in his hip for almost 25 years. He finally had it removed. That is all I know. Thank you for your help.
Many, many years ago I found a bit of information on a William Cummins who was in the 15th Infantry, Co. F; died of disease on 18 June 1862 (this was so long ago, in my early days of research that I do not now recall where I found it, but possibly in a book on the history of Ionia County as I made a notation: Ionia County, P 259, Military)
I sent a check/proper form to the National Archives for further information (only 5.00 back then) and all I got back was a copy of the card which tells me: "Wm Cumming; Rank, P; Co. F; 15 Regt't Mich. Inf. Regimental Hospital, 15th Michigan Infantry. Appears: May 27 -31-62 - Pres. " Over the years, I have been trying to find a bit more information about him, thinking he may be linked to my own Cummins/Cummings family who was in Eaton County. I have found nothing more; can anyone identify this man? I do not have access to those brown books that list the Civil War soldiers (although I also know they are not complete - first hand knowledge of this), but is he listed in there? I have checked out any military websites for Michigan I can find but nothing listed; the one link I found for this Regiment does not work... Can anyone provide information? Thank you....

According to his Civil War Records he died at the home
of Alexander Eaton. The sextons from Kalamo Twp. and Alamo Twp. have not been helpful at all. Alamo Township
has some of his family there, also there is a GAR marker
there that is on his Grandsons grave who was not in the Civil
War. I sure would like to find Grandfather but don't know where to look next. Ggreat grand father was born 1800 New Castle, Delaware and died Sept. 10, 1877. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks
Vicki Willis Scribner

I am trying to figure out if this is my ancestor. Does anyone know anything else about this Amos who filed a pension?

I have seen just one regimental history to date. I have no pics or anything from him. Nor do I have a death date and place for him ... Anything that anyone might have on Rodey or the 4th Michigan Cavalry would be appreciated.

Karen O'Meara

Mr. Miller, drummer boy from Michigan--Is this the one??

Hello. If I was looking to find some real info on this person where should I look?
Miller, Lewis W. MI 3rd Inf. (1st Org.) Co.G Drum.
I have an elderly friend, Mr. Best, who as a child had a man who had been in the Civil War who told wonderful stories. He had the last name Miller. This is what Mr. Best said,
"Mr. Miller was from Owasso, Michigan. At age 16 he tried to enlist in the Union Army (I presume in Michigan). They turned him down because of his age, and physical size. He waited a while, then tried again, this time lying about his age. They took him in as a "drummer boy," not as a foot soldier. All this is my recollection of hearing him tell it over and over to groups of kids. I assume he was in a Company of MICHIGAN soldiers. He said he wound up doing regular soldier duty, and fought in the Battle of Chicamauga and the Battle of Lookout Mountain. He was wounded at Lookout, then taken prisoner. He spent the rest of the war years in a Southern prison. He learned to like the South, and settled here, never returning to Michigan.
That's about all I remember about his army career. I think he was 79 years old when he left our home. So he was born about 1848 in MICHIGAN."
Confederate Flag found

I just came from the Michigan State Historical Museum in Lansing, MI, where I viewed a Confederate 1st National flag. The flag was found after several coincidences that started with me doing some genealogical research. The flag was brought back from Fredericksburg. It was in the Seage family from that point until it was turned over to the museum and has not been seen in public until now.The flag is a Stars and Bars, and was cut in half, so that most of the stripes are missing. It is silk, with painted stars. The fabric has deteriorated where it was painted. Otherwise, the flag is faded, but in excellent condition. It appears that it was designed to be hung vertically, such as from the bottom of a window, on a balcony, etc. It has 2 tabs on the flag to allow it to be hung. On the flag is printed the following: "Part of a Reb flag captured at Fredericksburg, VA. Dec. 13, 1862".
This flag will be returned to the Fredericksburg National Battlefield Park on Aug. 31 of this year. The descendants of the Seage family will be presenting it, along with units of reenactors and government officials. Kerry Chartkoff is looking for any information about this style of flag. If you have any questions or comments, you may contact me. This flag was found in June, so the announcement will be forthcoming. News is starting to get out, but there have been no official press releases as of this date. We are all excited about this find and hope someone on this list can help with the information we are lacking.
Thank you,
Meri Schoof

Booth family in the Civil War

My great grandfather Joseph G. Booth, along with two of his cousins, John R. Booth, and Daniel Booth served with the 7th Michigan Infantry Co. K. My great grandfather was transfered to the Veterans Reserve Corps, so there must have been an injury, or some disability involved. John R. Booth received a disability, but re-enlisted in february of 1864 and he died in June of 1864. I would like to know more about Joseph G. Booth and John R. Booth how they were injured, or killed. Daniel was listed as a deserter, but is also listed as a veteran and is buried in Burr Oak Cemetary. What happened? I am researching their involvement in the Civil War. Another Cousin Benjamin booth Served the Michigan 15th or 16th Infantry. What was his demise??

I just came upon some information concerning the 1st New York Cavalry Company K that was formed in Grand Rapids MI. And I think I may have a relative, Jonathan Gordon, that served in it.

First of all I am confused as to why a New York Company would be formed in Grand Rapids, MI??

There seems to be some confusion, or maybe it is just on my part, with the 1st NY Company K Veteran Cavalry that was formed in Hector NY. Or maybe NY and MI 1st Cavalry, Company K are one in the same?
