Anyone who has done an extended study of the New Hampshire rosters, will be aware of a large number of soldiers who claimed to have been born in Australia. Thanks to the very thorough research done by Mr. Len Traynor, of Sydney, New South Wales, about a decade or more ago, it was revealed that many of these soldiers had given their place of birth as a prank, and were no more Australian than their fellow soldiers, born in New Hampshire. Mr. Len Traynor, although a resident of Australia, has a very, very extensive knowledge of the American Civil War, and would put many of the Americans doing research on the War to shame. He has been highly commended by a large number of fellow Australian researchers of the Civil War, as well as many well known American researchers and authors of Civil War works. Mr. Traynor's revelation of the New Hampshire soldiers' prank, in claiming Australian birth, has been known for many years now, and that is why we, the original researchers of the American Civil War veterans in Australia and New Zealand, place very little reliance on these spurious claims, as shown in the New Hampshire rosters.
