One of my distant cousons wrote in a journal that my great great-great-grandfather Vincent Leonardi was held as a prisoner at Fort White in Tampa Florida during the civil war. It said he was caputured trying to run the blockade outside of St. Pete FL. He was already over the age to join or fight in the war. I can find no information of a Fort White and I grew up in the Tampa-St. Pete area. Can anyone help me prove of disprove this statement writen in this journal. I also have a great-grandfather Richard Turtlehorn Meares that I can find no records of him listed as a prisoner of war. Richard was first inlisted in Compnay K of the 7th Florida Infantry but he was never listed in any muster rolls and in another soldiers journal it was stated that he too was captured trying to run a blockage but at another location further south and that he was held in Key West in a prison camp that was not named in the journal. I am trying to find out if either or both stories are true so anyone with any information on Prisoners held at a Fort White or in Key West camp please send me the information. Even just a name of source for me to check would be great. Thanks
