Hi,
Hope this information is helpful.
My great grandmother said that she was raised on the "Creek Nation" in Missouri. She said it was too painful to talk about. The Creek Nation was located in Madison County, Missouri. I spoke to an elder who volunteered for the Fredericktown Library in Missouri. She said that her grandmother told her about the Creek Nation. She said there were a lot of problems there. She said that there were "Indians" there, but she did not know what tribes they were from. Unfortunately, she has since died and did not put anything in writing.
I understand that the Union Army and Confederate Army recruited or forced some American Indians to fight in the Civil War. It would not surprise me to hear that members of a tribe would be forcibly removed from Missouri(especially if they fought for the confederacy).
Also,I understand that Missouri started forcing Native Americans out of Missouri starting in the late 1820's before the removal act of 1838 was passed. If any American Indians were found outside of Oklahoma, the soldiers could remove them and force them to go to Oklahoma. I have been told that those Native Americans who stayed in Missouri tried to pass as white settlers or went into hiding.
According to my father, we had family members who lived in the hills in Madison County, Missouri. He said that they had black straight hair, and darker complexions. They rarely left the hills, even in the 1920's. We suspect they were Native Americans in hiding. We lost contact with them. I am hoping to reconnect with our family members from the hills.
