My mother & I are in the process of researching maternal lines of Great-Grandmother Sadie (Sarah) A McCaffrey.

Sadie had a Civil War uniform complete with sword/metals kept in cedar chest. The uniform was gray in color & adorned with medals, possibly belonging to Sadie's unknown father. I was always told that both were not there when she died and no one seems to know what happened to them.
Mother, Catherine BALL McCAFFREY, signed marriage certificate in 1887 giving permission for her daughter to marry.. this usually signified paternal figured was deceased.
The only clues I can find relating to unknown father:

1890 Veterans Schedule
Veteran's Name: John McCafrey
Relative's Name: Cathrine McCafrey
Relationship to veteran: Widow
Home in 1890 : Lower St Clair, Allegheny, Pennsylvania

Civil War Pension Index 1861-1935
L. 28 Penn.

Samuel Gray - born 1844 Illinois - died 1936 Illinois.
He was in Company C, 152 IL US INF
When I requested his Civil War Pension File from the National Archives, they replied that they do not have files for Veterans who died after 1930.
They said to try the Veterans' Administration. The Veterans' Administration has an uncooperative reputation. Would it be pounding my head on a brick wall to try and get Civil War records from them. Has anyone done this? Where to start?

My great grandfather William N. Bond served in the 98th Illinois Infantry. He died in 1899. I have searched many times the Civil War Pension Index. His name is not there. His wife died in 1910, her name does not appear on Widows Pension. Was wondering if someone could tell me why my great grandfather or his wife never applied for a Civil War Pension. I take it he was elegible, seems like all soldiers took it. Thanks, Johnny Bond

During the Civil War years, my Patrick Fraher lived in New York. After the Civil War Years, he moved to New Britain, CT and lived there until to 1874.

I don't think it's either of the two Patrick Frahers listed in the national park service civil war rosters database, but I'm not sure.

http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/soldiers.cfm

If anybody can tell me anything about this individual's service I would greatly appreciate it.
HELP!!! I'm so frustrated

I've been trying for months to find out when and where my gg-grandfather William A Bell died. He served in the 10th Infantry Company K Iowa. Today, since Ancestry is having free access to military records til the 31st(?) (I have no membership), I've tried looking through their info. I've found his Pension info that his wife Eva Ann Bell, Bellinger, Griffith nee Crosley applied for. She applied as Widow June 1, 1883 and Minor (they had a daughter, my g-grandmother Winifred) Jan(?) 17, 1879, both in Iowa. I've been trying the last few hours, with trying different variations on Williams name to look up Iowa Civil War Soldier Burial Records. I found his brother, but I cannot find my William. Why is he not listed in the Burial records? I even left off Iowa as place of death, incase he died somewhere else. Nothing. I thought he would have died in Des Moines, Iowa as that was his residence when he enlisted and that is where his wife and daughter lived after his death/ disappearance(?). Heck, for that matter, nobody can find William, nor Eva (daughter was not born yet) in the 1870 census. They married in 1867. So from 1867 to the Pension filed the first time in 1879, this family is missing. Any assistance is appreciated.

Morgan

need a look up...so our town can get a soldier a headstone.

Hi! My name is Laurie, and I have been working on a cemetery transcription project here in my town of Walpole MA. We know of a Civil War soldier who is buried here, but does not have a headstone. Could some one look up this gents service record, so we can begin the process of getting him a headstone thru the VA?

His name is George Nichols Gibson. He was born Sept 1840 (according to 1900 census)or 1841 (according to his death cert.) He was born in NYC. I'm not sure when he moved to Boston, but his son was born here in 1876, and I can find him in the 1880 census. Sometimes he uses his middle initial. His parents were Peter Gibson from Scotland, and Elizabeth (or Eliza) Nichols of England. He married #1 Catherine Delaney, and #2 Mary Hackett. Mary lived in the area until the 1920's when she relocated to Milton, NH

Thanks so much!
Laurie K

I was looking through the Illinois State Archives - Illinois Civil War Muster and Descriptive Rolls Database - and I found several Union Soldiers who were listed as deserting on July 1, 1865. Why would they do that? The fighting was over?

Unknown soldier remains found near Leadville Colorado in July 2007

Am new to research. Trying to help ID the remains of what appears to be a Civil War soldier who washed out onto the bank of the Arkansas River, about 20 mi South of Leadville, Colorado last July.

Remains included two military buttons, a Dragoon and a US Army Great Coat button, plus remnants of a wooden coffin and the iron staples which held it together. Also there was a swatch of dark cloth, possibly of a Union Army uniform.

Part of the remains had washed away. Forensic report indicates white male between 35-45 at time of death.

Only lead we have . . a FRANKLIN HOWARD age 50 was murdered near the find site in Dec 1889; an 1889 Leadville newspaper reported his age and arrest of the killer. Cannot locate any follow up information concerning the disposition of Mr Howard's remains. The 1889 newspaper claims he was retired and receiving a military pension, was with the 7th or 17th Regiment Illinois Cavalry. Being born in 1839, Mr Howard could have also been a Dragoon, which was the forerunner of the Cavalry. NO MIDDLE NAME/INITIAL FOR MR HOWARD IS MENTIONED.

The presence of a wood coffin and uniform indicates a formal burial. This was remote territory in 1889; Mr Howard could have been buried "where he fell" as a Civil War vet by the townspeople. The 1889 news article says Mr Howard was known and respected. He lived in what appears to be a company owned "cabin" on the bank of the river where he was a tie-cutter and laying rails; we believe this to be for the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad that is there to this day.

Have tried without success to get a thread from Illinois; on-line Civil War pensions and other records are incomplete. This man was most likely single, may not have had birth family left in Illinois.

Lake County (Leadville) Colorado Sheriff and associated researchers have no other leads; can anyone on this forum suggest a possible way to search further. I am inexperienced in this sort of project, would appreciate any help.

Please feel free to continue me direct: shortythered@frontiernet.net

Am a former resident of Leadville, Colorado which is my link to that community. Thank you.

I'm trying to find my gg-grandfathers death and burial. I see that Ancestry has an Iowa Civil War Soldier Burial Record database. My g-grandfather was William A. Bell b abt 1843 in Ohio. He was in the 10 th Iowa Infantry, Company K. Rank in and rank out was Private. Can someone do a look-up in the Iowa Civil War Soldier database and see if he is listed. He seems to have disappeared. I cannot find any obit, tombstone listing, nothing on him. His wife Eva Ann Crosley/ Crossley applied for minor benifits for their daughter, my g-grandmother, Winifred in 1879. Any help is appreciated.

I am trying to locate Frederic Perles, enlisted as Parlos, in the 1860 Federal Census. He enlised in the 10th U S Infantry in April of 1860 at Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Where would he have been sent for training prior to being sent to New Mexico, and how long was the training period at that time? He was a bugler.
Thank you in advance for any assistance.

=================================================

Submitted by: Cathy Porter-Maynard

=================================================

CIVIL WAR:

William Sayles (b. 1837, N.Y., d. 1913, Union County, South Dakota; buried, Plymouth County, Iowa), served in Company B, ''Fourth Iowa Volunteer Infantry''.

William's 1913 obituary also references his military history. (F.Y.I., SEE: 1913 Obituary of William Sayles, attached below).

William Sayles frequently spoke of his great admiration for General Sherman.
Indeed, he named one of his own sons after General Sherman (''John Sherman Sayles,'' born about 1892, Union Co. Sayler, applied for a widow's pension on April 1, 1913, after William's death.

If you order the records, be sure to list the correct Regiment that he belonged to, and, if possible list the Application # and Certificate #, from the pension record database.''

=================================================

# 2: D.O'Meara wrote:

Name: William Sayles ,
Residence: Council Bluffs, Iowa
Enlistment Date: 10 July 1861
Distinguished Service: DISTINGUISHED SERVICE
Side Served: Union
State Served: Iowa
Unit Numbers: 226 226
Service Record: Enlisted as a Private on 10 July 1861 at the age of 22 [?]
Enlisted in Company B, 4th Infantry Regiment Iowa on 08 August 1861.
Wounded on 29 December 1862 at Chickasaw Bayou, MS (Wounded severely in breast)
Mustered out Company B, 4th Infantry Regiment Iowa on 04 September 1864 in Jonesboro, GA

Source Citation: Side served: Union; State served: Iowa; Enlistment date: 10 July 1861..

Source Information:
Historical Data Systems, comp.. He first saw the light of day on May 17, 1837, and passed from this life March 6, 1913, at the age of 75 years, 9 months and 19 days, at his home in Richland township, Union county, South Dakota, following an illness of lagrippe and complications.

When he was six months of age the family emigrated from the state of New York to the State of Ohio, locating in Wayne county. They afterward moved to Holmes county, Ohio, where his father died when he was about sixteen years of age. Soon thereafter he left home, first going to Michigan, then to Omaha, Nebraska, where he joined a mining party and drove an ox team overland to Pike's Peak, Colorado, remaining there about three years and engaging in mining for gold and prospecting.

*[CIVIL WAR]:

In 1861 he returned to Omaha to offer his services in time of his country's need in the great civil strife, and enlisted in the [Company B], Fourth Iowa Volunteer Infantry, serving three years. He was with his regiment in several important battles, among them Pea Ridge, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge and Sherman's March to the Sea. He was twice severely wounded, but recovered and served out his full time of enlistment.

After the close of the war he returned to Medina county, Ohio, and lived with his widowed mother until 1868, where he became acquainted with and married Miss [Irenia] Albina Sargent on New Year's eve, 1868. In the year 1869 they decided to emigrate to the west. On January 20, 1869, they started by team from Lodi, Ohio, and their long, tedious overland journey ended March 12, that year at Elk Point, Dakota Territory. They located in Richland township, Union county, on a homestead, which has ever since remained the family home. They were accompanied on the trip by Mr. Sayles brother-in-law, Jesse Fetterman. At the time of their arrival there were only five organized counties in Dakota Territory, the settlements were few and far between and Indians quite plentiful. Through the grasshopper scourge of the '70's, the floods of the early '80's, the drought of summer and the cold and blizzards of winter and all the other privations and vicissitudes of pioneer days, when from a wilde!
rness was carved out the heritage of peace, prosperity and plenty of these later days, Mr. and Mrs. Sayles were among those who pinned their faith to the future of this beautiful valley of the Big Sioux and helpfully and unwaveringly bore their share of the struggles of the early days. A man of undaunted courage, in whom the principles of patriotism were deeply imbued; lofty of character, with honesty and integrity as cardinal virtues; a reader and close student of current events, particularly political lines, being a Republican of the old school; a kind and loving husband and father; a loyal friend and neighbor; a good citizen -- William Sayles will be missed and sincerely mourned by all who knew him.

Besides his devoted wife he is survived by the following children, all of whom reside in the home vicinity: Mrs. Florence [Sayles] Huckert, Frank Sayles, Mrs. Lottie [Charlotte Sayles] Maynard, Miss Hattie [Harriet] Sayles, and [John] Sherman Sayles.

Three of his sisters are also living: Mrs. Rowena [Sayles] Voorus of Oskaloosa, Iowa, Mrs. M.C. [Mary Charlotte Sayles] Fetterman of Union County, South Dakota, and Mrs. Harriet [Sayles] Morey of Baldwinsville, New York. A host of friends offer their sympathy to the bereaved family.

After a brief service at the home Saturday afternoon at 1 o'clock, the funeral was conducted in the Akron M.E. Church by Rev. L. Stuart. There was a very large attendance, especially of the older settlers, as a last tribute of respect. Deceased was a member of Biddlecome Post, G.A.R., of Akron [Iowa], and the local comrades and members of the W.R.C. attended in a body. He was one of the first members of the Masonic lodge at Elk Point [South Dakota] and a delegation from the order there and a large number of local Masons attended the service and exemplified the beautiful Masonic burial service at the grave. Interment was made in Riverside cemetery [Akron, Plymouth County, Iowa], beside his brother Jonas [Sayles], also a pioneer settler, who passed away a number of years ago.

[end]

.

=================================================

Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System:
http://www.civilwar.nps.gov/cwss/soldiers.cfm

No. 1

Soldier Name: Sayles, William

Side: Union

Function: Infantry

Regiment Name: 4th Regiment, Iowa Infantry

____________________________________

SOURCE:
Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System
http://www.civilwar.nps.gov/cwss/soldiers.cfm

*[General Information]:

UNION:
IOWA VOLUNTEERS

4th Regiment, Iowa Infantry

Organized at Council Bluffs and mustered in August 8, 1861.
Hello all,

New to Ancestry and have a growing tree. I have been focusing on a particular William F Sherwood born in 1844 who seems so far, to be the only candidate for a Civil War veteran in my family. He is from Tioga County PA. I have found some military listings for a few "Wiiliam Sherwoods" without the initial, but any paperwork so far does not list the parents (Orrin Ball Sherwood and Lucy Seely). One or two of these Williams are from the same county, born the same year approximately, but without the parent's names I cannot be sure. I seem to be at a dead end. Any other avenues? Thanks to anyone for any direction!

Jeff

I have been looking at Civil War forms and have noticed something odd (at least it is odd to me!). There are a lot of men listed with one name and then also with the name of "John Dean". Is this the equivalent of our present day John Doe? Most of them will have another name and an "alias" written beside the John Dean. Just curious as to what this means. Thanks.

United Confederate Veterans portrait

I have a photocopy of a portrait that belonged to my grandmother, and I am looking for more information. The portrait is of a man sitting in a chair, and at the bottom it states "Gen. B.W. Palmer of the Mountain Remnant Brigade, U.C.V. 25th Reunion at Ballinger, Texas."
The first initials are not easy to read. The B may also be a D, and the W could be a different letter as well. I'm not sure why my grandmother had this in her family files. I don't think any of our lines are related to Palmers. There are several other Confederate veterans, however. Any help would be appreciated, and I'll gladly provide a copy to any relatives of this man.
Los Angeles Times, October 27, 1899, pg. 2:
FAMILIES CREMATED -- Fourteen People Burned to Death While Sleeping. (Associated Press Report.) Mobile, (Alabama) Oct. 26. -- News was received today that fourteen people had been burned to death at Faires, Baldwin Co., about thirty miles northeast of Mobile. The information was brought to the city by Capt. Joseph E. Gordan, who resides in that locality. Some time during Monday night last fire destroyed the dwelling of Harry Goodlow and Samuel Smithson, cremating all occupants of both houses. The Goodlow family consisted of father, mother and six children.
There were six persons residing in the Smithson home, the husband, wife, three children, and a sister of Mr. Smithson. The fire is believed to have been of accidental origin. The pine trees surrounding the house caught fire from the flames, and prevented any assistance reaching the persons in the house. The bodies were found in the rooms where the different members of the families had been accustomed to sleep, death having come while they were sleeping. They formed a part of a colony of emigrants who had settled in this region. These two families had come from Iowa.

I have a fellow named Albert Major who served in the Louisiana 15th Regiment, Co C, as a Private. He was captured in Gettysburg and imprisoned at Fort Delaware. He took "the oath" in Jul 1863. By "the oath" I'm thinking he became a Galvanized Tar or Yankee. Can anyone out there help me further? I know that Albert Major was b. 1838 in Louisiana and possibly added on the name of Nobles in 1880. He was a Boatman in 1870 Escambia, Florida and later became a River Pilot. I have checked for lists of Galvanized Tars and Yankees and can only find an incomplete one, without Albert Major of course. I would appreciate any help at all.
