Dear Nancy, Thank you for your response.

Israel D. Dishong was in PA 54 Reg, Co. D
His military record and pension file both list his death date as 15Feb1865 in the hospital at Salisbury Prison, Salisbury, NC

I have seen the Quartermaster Record at the National Archives-it states that he is buried at Salisbury-no grave number. The officials at the cemetery told me that the report was unreliable, full of errors and would not accept it as proof.

They are not arguing the fact that he died there, but want MORE PROOF he is buried there. Shortly after my posting, I received an "official rejection" I then tried to enlist the help of Congressman Murtha, who represents the district that Israel was from in PA and also a Veteran himself-a few months later I received the equilivant of a "form" letter and never heard from him again.

So many times I have started to fill out the VA form for an "In Memory" stone to be placed in a cemetery in PA-but I can't seem to complete it. I feel it belongs in NC.

I have been told that there are NO "In Memory" stones at Salisbury for the young men that were thrown into the trenches during the Civil War at Salisbury Prison. I don't understand what's going on down there. At random I have looked up other names of soldiers that died at the prison, on the Quartermaster Record, and they do not have grave #s either.

Thank you again for responding, Liz
