Does anyone have information about my great grandfather Michael Ryan who srved the Union in the Civil War along with his brother Patrick? They left Killoscully in Tipperary, came to America and served the Union, and then returned to Loughorna, Pukane in Tipperary. Patrick never married but Michael (1831-1891) had three wives, the last being my great grandmother Mary, and seven sons.

Donlon / Missouri Cavalry Soldier

I am researching Michael DONLON of the 10th Missouri Cavalry (Union) He mustered in April 1864, and was mustered out of 2nd MO CAV. Co, M in Sept. 1865
I am trying to place Michael anywhere in Missouri in 1864 or before. He is listed as being aged 24 in 1864, but his death certificate in 1889 (NYC) lists him aged 40. This puts his birth year at either 1840 ,or 1849. He was born in Ireland and his father was Michael Donlon and Mother was Kate Donlon. He is in NYC after 1870. Anyone with resources to search for any listings of this Donlon family from 1859 -1869 anywhere in Missouri please contact me. I am interested in learning where in the state he might have lived, and have found no leads to date. His enlistment papers were done in St. Louis where his occupation was Laborer. He was substitute for Charles Bayha Esq. of St. Louis City. His Military Records can be viewed at http://new.photos.yahoo.com/donlon6465/
E-mail donlon6465@yahoo.com or gloriamozas@aol.com

NY Irish Brigade Chaplain, Father William Corby

July 2, 1863: While the mass of men bowed their heads for several minutes in a wheat field undisturbed by bursting shells, Brigade chaplain, Father William Corby, granted general absolution to the kneeling and standing men of New York's Irish Brigade. The moment was captured in a sketch by soldier-artist Charles W. Reed of the 9th Massachusetts Light Artillery who kept his sketchbook handy at all times and produced a great body of work including illustrated letters back home.

It was noted that "ears of wheat flew in the air all over the field as they were cut off by the enemy's bullets," and that Father Corby had added a stern injunction to his blessing: "The Catholic Church," he stated, "refuses Christian burial to the soldier who turns his back upon the foe."

-- "Voices of the Civil War, Gettysburg," a Time-Life book

My gg-grandfather James Collins (born 1832 in Galway, Ireland) was a Sergeant Major with the 63rd NY Volunteers who fought with the Second Corps, Army of the Potomac as part of the Irish Brigade. After volunteering in 8/1861 and surviving the entire war James was wounded and captured at the Battle of Jerusalem Road at the Second Battle of Peterburg. He was sent to Libby Prison in Richmond where he died on either 7/1/1864 or 8/1/1864 (based on separate sources). His pension record has him buried at Mt. Arlington. He is not at Arlington National Cemetery nor is he at Mt. Arlington, NJ Cemetery. Folks have suggested that he might be at one of the five large Civil War cemeteries around Richmond but I do not know which ones they mean. Can anyone tell me the names of these cemeteries. His wife and kids never knew where he was buried.

Worthy Irish lost in the dusty bins of history / CSA Civil War history

So many great soldiers made up the Company F of the Georgia Phillips Legion during the Civil War but so very many of them have been lost in the dusty pages of history and have not been found. Company F, known as the Lochrane Guards, was a "noble band of patriots, all natives of the "Emerald Isle" under their worthy Captain, Jackson Barnes, full 80 strong.....We are confident the warm hearted & generous sons of "Green Erin" will acquit themselves like men. They are adopted citizens it is true, but yield to none in devotion and love to the South - the sunny home of their choice." This is a quote from the research of Kurt Graham, an esteemed Civil War researcher who has spent many long hours trying to account for all the men who made up the Phillips Legion. Please visit Kurt's website at: http://www.angelfire.com/ga2/PhillipsLegion/InfCo.F.html and if you recognize any of the brave soldiers therein listed, Kurt would be delighted to hear from you. He has much in the way of military data that he can exchange in return for genealogical data. One of the key issues still needed to be resolved is the date & place of death on some of these men so that a pension application can be found, if they survived the war. Kurt's email address is galegion@bellsouth.net

He died the 2nd day of the Battle of Gettysburg.
Is there a list of casualties by name from that battle? I have been unable to find out exactly which unit he was in.

Checking the pension card index I have 2 Thomas N. Carruthers. One from NY with wife Mara M.
Second is from the PA infantry. However, there is a wife Mary E. listed which is not given in our oral history. Carruthers of the PA infantry that would be greatly appreciated!
Becky T.

I'm looking for Edward Whalen in any civil war military records. He was from Co. Galway, Ireland and arrived in the US with his wife Bridget in the early 1850's. They were in Cincinnati, OH in 1858, but it is not known which state he enlisted with. Rumour in our family is that he was a captain, but another was that he was a sailor (navy or marines??). Edward and his family returned to Ireland after the war, and he died not long after.
If anyone can help me locate any of his military records, or just have a location for him, please email me.
Thanks for your help
Dallass
Australia

I am looking for information on Lt. Col. James Haggerty of the 69th New York State Militia. He was killed on July 21, 1861 in the Battle of Bull Run, Virginia. He was born in Glenswilly, County Donegal, Ireland. On May 30, 1992 his grave in First Calvary Cemetary, Queens, New York was marked with a granite celtic cross tombstone by the Irish Brigade, the Donegal Association of New York and the 69th Regiment Veterans Corps. There is mention made of Haggerty: Later that day the Brigade was ordered up to support Tyler's Brigade which was attempting to gain control of Blackburn's Ford across Bull Run. Finding the ford heavily defended, Tyler ordered a retreat. The retreat was not as orderly as Tyler would have preferred. Among his troop rushing to the rear were the 13 New York State Militia. Organized in Rochester, N.Y., they were uniformed in cadet gray. Thinking they were the advancing rebels, the men of the 69th leveled bayoneted muskets and prepare to repel the perceived attack. Only the quick actions by Captain James Haggerty, prevented them from firing upon their fellow New Yorkers. Haggerty would be killed in action a few days later. If anyone can provide additional information on a personal or military level, I would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance.
