Godwin was attached to this unit when it surrendered at Shreveport, La. in late Septemeber or early October 1864. He was listed as a prisoner in Company D. 1st Missouri, 1st Cavalry Division Trans-Mississippi Department was originally the 13th Missouri Cavalry CSA under the command of Col Robert C. Wood. Any information on Sgt Godwin or the Tran-Mississippi Department would be greatly appreciated.

My gggrandfather, Robert E. Gary, is buried on the family farm in Yazoo, MS. His headstone gives his Civil War unit as "Perkins Regiment, CSA". I've searched all over to find this unit, but have only turned up results for Missouri. There is some evidence of a Perkins Regt in MS, but cannot confirm that this is the same unit. Can anyone tell me what kind of unit it was (infantry, cav, etc), or where it fell under the Civil War order of battle (what unit was "above" it)? This has been a family mystery for over 50 years! There is a 45 year old bottle of brandy riding on this one!

I've found a document on acestry saying he was a prisoner of war and was captured Feb. 16, 1864. I was wondering if any body has any information about what battle the 45th was fighting at this time or any other information on Wiseman Pannell

I'm sorry I don't have any more info than that posted by Johnny Reb. I think many of these men lived very close to each other and/or were related in some way. My ancestor died as a POW in NJ. He left a wife and four boys one of which was the line of my husband. He had been released just as the war had ended but was too sick to come home. We are very proud of him, obviously, even though it may not be politically correst to be so.

Thanks for your kind reply. I feel frustrated at times as I have searched for the grave of my G-gf; having a piece of an old letter from Maury Co. TN, the writer was a lady who was on the 1860 census there; she wrote the widow (my Ggm) in MS and the last page described his burial, "near Columbia, TN"; his widow said in a deposition for his back-pay, that he died on or about May 6th, 1862; he was in Battle of Shiloh; but all experts tell me if he had been wounded and then died, he would've been sent south, not north of Corinth, etc. So, I've never located his grave and no one to explain the letter. I wish you good success in your search; we just have to keep looking.

Thank you. The custermen.com website is owned by my cousin, whom I am in touch nearly daily. There are three of us cousins that work on the Cole family. None of us know where the Fort Pillow Confederates that died during the battle of 1864 were buried. We have put out many queries and contacted many people but no one seems to know the answer to this question. The Black Hawk Rifles were not at Fort Pillow. Richard Cole was with the 5th Mississippi Cavalry. I very much appreciate your trying to help. It's people like you that will someday help us find the answer to where those Confederate dead were buried.
Thank you,
Nancy

Also, as I mentioned in earlier note, H.H. Wall's name is inscribed on a monument in Liberty, Miss. honoring sons of Amite Co. killed during the Civil War. He is listed as a member of Co K, 33rd Miss Regt. Is it possible that someone else may have information about this. How would I go about obtaining a copy of their service info?
His service records would be available from both the Mississippi and National Archives. They would indicate whether or not he died during service.

You would need to know which regiment he served in, or at least be able to narrow it down. You can do a search through the index at the following website.

Thanks to several thoughtful and kind researchers I now have proof that Walter H. NUNNELEE / NUNNELLEE did indeed serve the Confederacy in Co D, 20th MS Infantry as did William H. NUNNELEE.

As N-u-n-n-e-l-e-e is such a rare spelling it is quite possible that Walter and William are related and I will try to find out if this is so.
I will update this message when I have received Walter and his wife Amanda's pension applications.
Kathye
n540@comcast.net

============ Confederate pension # 4039 =================
W. H. Nunnellee applied for a Confederate pension from Bradley County in 1908, citing his service in Co. D, 20th Mississippi Infantry. His application was approved on August 6, 1908. Amanda Nunnellee also applied for a Confederate pension from Bradley County in 1912, stating that her husband had died on August 10, 1911. Her application was approved on August 8, 1912. The pension record file number is 4039.

Desmond Walls Allen's "Index to Arkansas Confederate
Pension Applications" and found the following (p. 223):
"Nunnellee, W.H.; widow: Amanda; Co. D, 20
Miss. --; he applied: 1908, she applied: 1912, Bradley Co.; he died 11/10/1911."
=========================================================

I need some help with the most misspelled surname ever....
............ NUNNELEE (the rarest of all spellings)

The following list of soldiers is from the online soldiers and sailors site > http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/regiments.cfm
The first 4 names are undoubtedly the same man and possibly the 5th man is too and he's the soldier I'm interested in:
William H. NUNNELEE > Co D 20th MS Inf CSA
W.H. NUNNLEE > Co D 20th MS Inf CSA (aka William H. NUNLEE)
W.N. NOMLEY > Co D 20th MS Inf CSA (aka William N. NANNELEE)
W.H. MUNLER > Co D 20th MS Inf CSA (aka William H. NUNNELEE)
W. MINNELLE > 20th MS Inf CSA
A. MUMLEY > Co E 20th MS Inf CSA

I am trying to identify Walter H. NUNNELEE born abt 1833 AL
married Amanda [unknown and per the 1910 census she had been married before] about 1869 most likely in MS
1850 - not found yet
1860 - not found yet
1870 Meridian, Lauderdale Co MS as Walter H. NUNELLY
1880 Pennington, Bradley Co AR as Walter H. NUNLEY
1900 Pennington, Bradley Co AR as Walter H. NUNNELEE
1910 Pennington, Bradley Co AR as Walter H. NUNNELEE

On the Bradley Co AR GenWeb list of civil war soldiers I found the following:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~arbradle/military/civil_war4.html
"W.H. NUNNELLEE enlisted in Company "D" 20th Mississippi serving from 1861-1865. Wife Amanda. He died Nov 10, 1911."

1st QUESTION > Did the "W.H. NUNNELLEE" service information come from his or his wife's pension application?
OR, was the information found on soldier "W.H. NUNNLEE" assumed to be Walter H. Nunnelee but isn't ?

2nd QUESTION > Was "W.H. NUNNELLEE" Walter or William ? There were NO other Nunnelee's (any spelling) in Lauderdale Co MS or Bradley Co AR when Walter and his family lived there and according to the census he could not read or write..... so where did he come up with the very rare spelling N-u-n-n-e-l-e-e ... (did a family member spell it for him?) or (was the census taker familiar with that spelling...not too likely as the closest Nunnelee's lived all the way across the state)

3rd QUESTION > what is the best way for me to identify the men listed above who served in the 20th Ms Infantry, Co D ?

FYI ... I descend from a long line of Walter Nunnelee's so it's very important to me to identify the man who died in Bradley Co AR..... perhaps he was orphaned young as there were never any recognizable family in the places he lived?

Kathye
N-4059

Looking for any information regarding the "Leake Rebels" of the 33rd Mississippi Infantry, Company "F" and the battles they fought. I have four relatives who served in Company "F"; Levi,Malakiah, Ransom and Solomon HOWELL. Levi Howell appears to have been killed in battle. I already view and ordered a CD through, http://www.csawardept.com, and waiting to view the information. any other info would be appreaciated.

Vicksburg and Hopkins' Artillery

The 8th Illinois Infantry Regiment Company "A" (3month)
http://www.civilwar.ilgenweb.net/r050/008-3a-in.htm
List John Bowen from Decatur muster in 25 April, 1861 and mustered out 25 July, 1861.

The 8th Illinois Infantry Regiment Company "A" (3 year)
They organized 25 July, 1861 - 4 May, 1866.
http://www.civilwar.ilgenweb.net/r050/008-a-in.htm

On this roster his residence and date of muster are not listed, rank of recruit. The remarks say he was transferred to Hopkins Batt'y Co C 2d Art. I can find no other enlisted or officers that were transferred to Hopkins Artillery. Is/was this a valid unit, if so to what state were they from?
The following is the only other mention I can find about the Hopkins Artillery, even this I am assuming that it is the same as that associated with the 8th Illinois 6 years later:
"January 1857 Governor-elect Bissell and family arrived for installation to office and was escorted by Capt. Hopkins' artillery. From "A Complete History of Illinois from 1863 to 1873" written by Alexander Davidson and Bernard Stuve 1877." This was found on a Google search.

I am trying to get information on John Bowen so I can ask for his records for the whole story. He was supposedly killed during the siege of Vicksburg. I find it interesting that there is such absence of the Hopkins's Artillery in any records. He is not listed in the cemetery for that battle and I can only guess that he was one of those that could not be identified when transferred following the war. John’s brother Daniel Bowen fought with him in another Illinois unit 116th Company “A” and he survived, Daniel was my
G-Grandfather.

Any information on this unit (Hopkins’ Artillery) would be greatly appreciated also any suggestion.

Thanks
Pat
Mitchell thanks for the site note, I had not seen this roster yet. I am going to request a complete history for John Bowen because from these various rosters there is too much conflicting information. With this one he is discharged as disabled and my informtion as died at Vicksburg. With the name of John L. Bowen also hase me wondering if he is the right person. The one I am thinking is without a middle initial.

Pat Bowen

Most likely it is a "Hardee hat badge" On most hardee hats (a type often worn by US troops, especially here in the South), there would be an eagle pin (actually it is the badge of the US Army) that was used to hold up one side: the side the soldier aims with...that way the hat wouldn't be knocked off by aiming his rifle. Hope this helps. Type in hardee hat pin on any search engine and see if it matches.

The 1910 edition of the "Mississippi Marine Brigade and Ram Fleet Survivors Association Roster" lists Thomas Patterson as a civilian Pilot. The "Captain" of a Ram Fleet vessel would have been an Army or MMB officer. However, because of their skill in operating boats and their special knowledge of the rivers, Pilots, for all intents and purposes, outranked the boats' Captains. Neither commercial steamers or military vessels operating on the western rivers could not be moved without a qualified Pilot at the helm.

In fact, very few of the Pilots aboard the vessels of the Ram Fleet, MMB or US Navy were military personnel -- the vast majority were civilians hired by the military.

If anyone has ever seen a pin shaped like an upside down "rounded" triangle with an embossed eagle on it, could you email me? I have come across one in some family "treasures" and I can't identify it as Civil War or WWI (maybe). Or if there is a link to a site that I can go and study what pins (if any) were used on CSA uniforms, I would appreciate it. My email is vernaws@aol.com. Thanks! Verna
