Vicksburg and Hopkins' Artillery

The 8th Illinois Infantry Regiment Company "A" (3month)
http://www.civilwar.ilgenweb.net/r050/008-3a-in.htm
List John Bowen from Decatur muster in 25 April, 1861 and mustered out 25 July, 1861.

The 8th Illinois Infantry Regiment Company "A" (3 year)
They organized 25 July, 1861 - 4 May, 1866.
http://www.civilwar.ilgenweb.net/r050/008-a-in.htm

On this roster his residence and date of muster are not listed, rank of recruit. The remarks say he was transferred to Hopkins Batt'y Co C 2d Art. I can find no other enlisted or officers that were transferred to Hopkins Artillery. Is/was this a valid unit, if so to what state were they from?
The following is the only other mention I can find about the Hopkins Artillery, even this I am assuming that it is the same as that associated with the 8th Illinois 6 years later:
"January 1857 Governor-elect Bissell and family arrived for installation to office and was escorted by Capt. Hopkins' artillery. From "A Complete History of Illinois from 1863 to 1873" written by Alexander Davidson and Bernard Stuve 1877." This was found on a Google search.

I am trying to get information on John Bowen so I can ask for his records for the whole story. He was supposedly killed during the siege of Vicksburg. I find it interesting that there is such absence of the Hopkins's Artillery in any records. He is not listed in the cemetery for that battle and I can only guess that he was one of those that could not be identified when transferred following the war. John’s brother Daniel Bowen fought with him in another Illinois unit 116th Company “A” and he survived, Daniel was my
G-Grandfather.

Any information on this unit (Hopkins’ Artillery) would be greatly appreciated also any suggestion.

Thanks
Pat
If anyone has ever seen a pin shaped like an upside down "rounded" triangle with an embossed eagle on it, could you email me? I have come across one in some family "treasures" and I can't identify it as Civil War or WWI (maybe). Or if there is a link to a site that I can go and study what pins (if any) were used on CSA uniforms, I would appreciate it. My email is vernaws@aol.com. Thanks! Verna

Fought thru the 4 yrs of the war - at Atlanta received 14 bullet holes in his clothes but received no wounds. Received an honorable discharge at Richmond VA at the close of the war." Please let me know if you have any information on this person- not sure what relation he is to our family. Also are mentioned Pvt Joe J. Smith (married Lucy Ann Pickard), Capt Ompe (?) Lee and Roland Jones 1st Lt who became capt after Lee's death.
Regimental History

I am seeking information for publication of a regimental history on the 2nd Mississippi Infantry Regiment (Falkner's-Stone's). The unit was recruited from the original
four counties of northeast Mississippi which now include all or portions of Tishomingo, Itawamba, Pontotoc, Tippah (the original counties) and Benton, Alcorn,
Prentiss, Lee and Union (new counties). I am primarily interested in letters, diaries, and period photographs of members of the regiment. I already have the
microfilmed service records for members of the regiment, so do not need information along those lines. I would be happy to reimburse for reasonable copying and
mailing costs for such items. Providers of such information will be acknowledged if used as a part of the final regimental history.

Michael R. Brasher

William H. NUNNELEE but was there also a Walter H. in the 20th Ms Inf, Co D ??

I need some help with the most misspelled surname ever....
............ NUNNELEE (the rarest of all spellings)

The following list of soldiers is from the online soldiers and sailors site > http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/regiments.cfm
The first 4 names are undoubtedly the same man and possibly the 5th man is too and he's the soldier I'm interested in:
William H. NUNNELEE > Co D 20th MS Inf CSA
W.H. NUNNLEE > Co D 20th MS Inf CSA (aka William H. NUNLEE)
W.N. NOMLEY > Co D 20th MS Inf CSA (aka William N. NANNELEE)
W.H. MUNLER > Co D 20th MS Inf CSA (aka William H. NUNNELEE)
W. MINNELLE > 20th MS Inf CSA
A. MUMLEY > Co E 20th MS Inf CSA

I am trying to identify Walter H. NUNNELEE born abt 1833 AL
married Amanda [unknown and per the 1910 census she had been married before] about 1869 most likely in MS
1850 - not found yet
1860 - not found yet
1870 Meridian, Lauderdale Co MS as Walter H. NUNELLY
1880 Pennington, Bradley Co AR as Walter H. NUNLEY
1900 Pennington, Bradley Co AR as Walter H. NUNNELEE
1910 Pennington, Bradley Co AR as Walter H. NUNNELEE

On the Bradley Co AR GenWeb list of civil war soldiers I found the following:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~arbradle/military/civil_war4.html
"W.H. NUNNELLEE enlisted in Company "D" 20th Mississippi serving from 1861-1865. Wife Amanda. He died Nov 10, 1911."

1st QUESTION > Did the "W.H. NUNNELLEE" service information come from his or his wife's pension application?
OR, was the information found on soldier "W.H. NUNNLEE" assumed to be Walter H. Nunnelee but isn't ?

2nd QUESTION > Was "W.H. NUNNELLEE" Walter or William ? There were NO other Nunnelee's (any spelling) in Lauderdale Co MS or Bradley Co AR when Walter and his family lived there and according to the census he could not read or write..... so where did he come up with the very rare spelling N-u-n-n-e-l-e-e ... (did a family member spell it for him?) or (was the census taker familiar with that spelling...not too likely as the closest Nunnelee's lived all the way across the state)

3rd QUESTION > what is the best way for me to identify the men listed above who served in the 20th Ms Infantry, Co D ?

FYI ... I descend from a long line of Walter Nunnelee's so it's very important to me to identify the man who died in Bradley Co AR..... perhaps he was orphaned young as there were never any recognizable family in the places he lived?

Kathye
N-4059

David Guthrie is noted at the Military Prison in Louisville Ky. It states that he was captured July 5, 1864 at Chattahouchie and discharged to Camp Morton, Indianapolis, Ind. July 13, 1864. He is noted at Camp Morton as captured at Chattahouchie on July 3, 1864 and was "Transfered for Exchange March 4, 1865." Are there records showing where an individual was taken for this exchange? Would he have returned to his Unit?

I understand that the 40th Infantry surrendered on April 26, 1865.

I have been unable to find David Guthrie(ery)(rey) anywhere in the 1870 census. He was born 1834 in Alabama. He and his wife were in the 1860 census for Neshoba Co., Ms. with one child. They had two other children, one born in 1866 and another abt. 1868, so he did survive the Civil War.

Any help would be appreciated.

CSA Hospital in Jackson, MS--do medical records still exist from this hospital?

My GGgrandfather shows up in a register of hospitalized patients here, per his Civ. War records. He was hospitalized Feb 5, 1863 for "febris typhoides", then sent to General Hospital Feb 23, 1863.
In the remarks section it says "Brother to nurse him" next line says "vaccinated". I do not know how to interpret this remark...at first I thought it indicated that his brother, who was to nurse him, had been vaccinated against typhoid, but this seems unlikely, since the vaccination didn't exist (as far as I can find) until the 1890's. So, I am now wondering if this indicates that he (my GGgrandfather) himself was vaccinated against SOMEthing while in this hospital, which was completely unrelated to the remark that his brother was to nurse him. How would I go about finding out a bit more about these remarks? Do records still exist from this hospital, and if so, where?
Also, what would "sent to general hospital" mean? What hospital would that be?
My GGgrandfather did not die in the war, he was discharged in April of 1863 due to "disability". I do not know if that is related to the typhoid or if it indicates something else. His widow's pension indicates he was wounded in the war and discharged, but at the time of his military service his future wife was a 2 year old girl. How much she actually knew of his military experiences, I do not know.
At any rate, I have to wonder if more information exists somewhere regarding these "remarks" in his military record (they came from some OTHER source, and I'm assuming it to have been his medical record, or at least some record from that CSA hospital). Where would such records be now, if they still exist?
Thanks for any ideas on this matter. He is a dead end in my tree, and this "brother who nursed him" would be the only blood relative I know of for him. Of course he is unnamed in the remarks section, but perhaps there is more, elsewhere?
Any help appreciated.
-Pam
I have learned that after the battery was formed in Hazelhurst, MS it was sent to the Mississippi Gulf Coast as part of the 3rd Mississippi. It remained there are part of coastal defense until just before the fall of New Orleans, where it fell back and was reorganized with the other units in Mississippi and Louisiana at Camp Moore in April and May of 1862. It was then ordered to Port Hudson as part of its defense. After the fall of Port Hudson, it was surrendered and exchanged in July, 1863.

My g-grandfather, Thomas L. Mullican served in the Seven Stars Artillery. I think he was a cannoneer, but have no way to prove it. Like I said, after the surrender and exchange, nothing is heard of him until Feb, 1864, where he joins the 1st Mississippi Mounted Rifles (a yankee unit organized in northern Mississippi to defend Memphis for Nathan Forest).

On Feb 23, 1864 do you know where the Seven Stars Artillery was stationed when it disbanded? Also do you know what kind of uniforms they wore -- gray or butternut?

Thanks again,
JOEL
D; both are in Ms.

I am trying to find Henry's family and was wondering if this might be a brother. At ancestry.com, Hance's only listing is in the civil war, no census or anything else. I have tried rootsweb searches in the two counties, attala and chickasaw, no luck. Any info appreciated.

My ggrandfather was in the 54th and the 48th Inf. of Tennessee.
His records from state of Tennessee state that he was captured at Fort. Donelson, TN., and taken to Camp Douglas,
Illinois.
His record appears on the ROLL OF PRISONERS OF WAR,
at CAMP DOUGLAS, ILLINOIS, August 1, 1862. Stated that he was captured at Island No. 10., Is that in Mississippi or
Fort Donelson, Tn.,?
When Captured: april 8, 1862.
He was in a Privt. Pelican Guards ???? Btry.???
Belongs to the 54th Tenn Co., "E".
State of Tennessee has no records on him after he was captured, no pension, no death, no nothing.
Since he had no pension I would assume that he died before
he left Camp Douglas, Illinois. No death records tell me nothing.
In Tennessee, the Widows received pensions after 1900,
there is no record of his widow receiving a pension. She
died before 1900, we believe. No record in Maury County,TN., where she ws living in 1880 census with several
grown children and 2 grandchildren. No other record of Robert ALLEN'S whereabouts.
Question is: Where is Island 10.............and if Mississippi, how do I find that information?
Thanks for any help you may give me,
Joyce A.
I am interested in finding my husband's great great grandfather. His grandfather, Charles Thomas Noble, was a blind Methodist Circuit rider in Missisissippi but his family originated in Columbus, Georgia, I'm told.
The only information that I have is that Charles Thomas Noble married Camella Adams, of Clarke County Alabama and they moved to Ellisville, Mississippi. (Mr. Noble died around 1955.)
I'm looking for any connection through collateral descent that would allow my husband to join the Sons of Confederate Veterans.
My husband's father, Percy Allen Graham, was the son of Charles Graham and Almeda Clark Graham. Percy Graham was born in Sumrall, Miss. in 1913. This is in Lamar County, Ms.
My own great grandfather was Williamson Allen Glover, of Rosemount plantation, Forkland, Alabama.
Williamson Glover was in Co K, 41st Regt Ms Infantry, they enlisted in Noxubee Co, Ms and were called MISSISSIPPI RIP RAPS.
Alas, I still need to find my husband's ancestors...
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you.
Ruth Glover Graham
(Mrs. Charles Noble Graham)
Greetings,
I am doing my dissertation on African-American soldiers recruited in Mississippi during the Civil War. Since these men have largely been ignored in history, I seek to document their lives from the antebellum era until they passed on. I am particularly interested in information regarding what they did and how they fared after the war ended. If your ancestor served in a Mississippi African American unit, please contact me.

Sincerely,

David

A native of Georgia, veteran John Smith, age 100+, attended the 75th Anniversary of the battle of Gettysburg, PA, in 1938.
He reportedly was at the actual battle in July 1863, and gave a detailed account of his wounding there. The newspaper reporter indicated John Smith was a member of the 46th Georgia Infantry. A problem is that the 46th GA was not at Gettysburg, and John Smith is not listed on any 46th GA rosters.

John Smith appears on the 1930 Census for Lauderdale County, MS, age 98, a native of Georgia.

Does anyone know when John Smith died, and perhaps where he is buried?

J., age 31, his wife, born in Mississippi, and parents born in Georgia. Omie, daughter, age 11, Lennie, daughter, age 9, Ben, age 7, Frank, age 5, and Asie, son, age 1. The children were all born in Mississippi. The census was in E.D. 77. I am guessing that it means East District. Am interested to know anything about this family, especially to see if Lennie later married William Henderson and lived in Waco, Texas. Any information would be greatly accepted. Thanks a million! The last survivor of Co K, 16th MS Reg., known as the Wilkinson Co Rifles. Uninterrupted practice of medicine for 61 years.

I am looking for information regarding the date and circumstances of the death of Col. D. W. C. (DeWitt Clinton) Bonham. Internet sites list him as dying at Camp Beauregard, Kentucky, in the winter of 1861-62. Family letters, however, place him in Issaquena & Warren Counties, Mississippi, as late as the summer/fall of 1863, fleeing Union troops. Someone once told me that there was an obituary in the Memphis newspapers that stated his body had been sent back to his plantation in Mississippi. Can anyone tell me where I might obtain a copy of the obituary?

There will be a period to see how many members we can get to join and then we will open it up to a vote and election of officers, Dues wil have to be agree upon at the out set of membership as well. Note Dues will go to the upkeep and maintenance of the Cemetery. Only a small portion to go to paperwork and flyers. very small.

contact William T.
