I believe I have done all that you indicated in your answer.
I finally did get a Look-Up for the 1870 Census with various spellings of his name and I'm familiar with, and have used, the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors web site...
I even ordered the local newspapers from that time from the library in case it showed any deaths from the Civil War. It was a no go...
I am thinking now that Elijah died in the War but there was no record of his death. I am sure that this must have happened. It just bothers me because, his being such a young man, I would think that someone would have bothered to get the news to his mother... I wonder if they kept a list of the Civil War Dead... (Remember the lists the families read in "Gone with the Wind"?)
