Civil War Regiment with the Most Australian Born Soldiers.

It would seem, from all the documentary evidence that we have now gathered, that the 1st Oregon Infantry was the only unit, raised during the war, that had the largest number of Australian born personnel in its ranks. So far we are aware of five of these Australian born soldiers, two of whom were brothers. The western states had the highest concentration of Australians and New Zealanders prior to the war, most of whom were there for the gold rush period, and many of whom remained in the United States after the war. Most of these were residents of California, and the census records show that a large number of them were miners. There were also many family groups from Australia, mostly residing in the San Francisco area. At least two of these Australian born San Franciscan residents were young teenagers, residing near each other, and would most certainly have known each other. They both enlisted in the Union Navy at San Francisco, within a couple of months of each other. The revelations from numerous records, such as census and immigration documents, as well as service records and pension applications have proven to be a treasure trove of data, and no doubt several volumes of information can be gleaned from all this data that has been collected so far.
However, I have also found that it is best to go directly to the actual census documents, when researching these personnel, as the transcriptions of basic data, placed by transcribers on the Ancestry pages can be quite misleading, especially in respect to Australia and Austria. Many times I have come upon the place of birth transcribed as Australia, which, when perused at the actual documents is actually shown to be Austria, and vice versa. In many cases this can be easily seen by the actual surname, which, when shown to be either English or American in nature, is most likely to be an Australian, but, if shown to be somewhat European, is almost certain to be Austrian. This complication between Australia and Austria has often been a source of some confusion.

A John Tice came on the U.S.S. Shark to Oregon in 1846, and was wanted along with 5 other men for abandoning their contract and their was a reward for them. The John Tice I'm looking for arrived in Oregon July 16, 1846, lived in Marion Co.( from 1847-1860's) then Union Co.( died Nov. 1869), Oregon. I read that a lot of the military men at that time went from Marion Co. to Union Co., Oregon. All I have is census info. and land grant info. on him. Would like to know if there is any lists of names for the Navy, or Army for 1846-1869 for Oregon, and if there is does it give parents names. Would also like to know if anybody has info. on names of military cemetarys in Marion Co. or Union Co. Oregon. Any info. would be very much appreciated! Thankyou! Angela

I'm looking for help with tracing a Charles L Boultbee who was born in Ceylon and joined the 1st Oregan Volunteers in 1864. I think he must be the son of John Boultbee my 4 greats uncle who was a great traveller and ended up in Ceylon (Now Sri-Lanka). We new nothing of this son until he turned up recently in an extract from a muster roll. Any help would be much appreciated.

I am looking to see if John W. CLINE was a soldier in the ACW from OR. There is some indication that the family came to Oregon in 1844. According to census records he was born in about 1837 in IA. According to his son's death certificate his wife was Mary Lousignont who was born in Oregon (according to census records). John and Mary's oldest child was born in 1869, so I have reason to believe that John might have served from Oregon in the Civil War, and therefore didn't marry until he was older (32 if the census records are correct). Most of the records I have found for John are in northern Oregon - Columbia, Clatsop, Washington, Clackamas Cos.

TIA,
Jan
