Cambria County, paying surrogate to serve in one's stead
According to family lore, my ggrandfather, Thomas Bradley of Gallitzin, paid $300 to another man to serve in the Civil War in his stead. This man died. Thomas paid another man $300 to serve, and he died, too. Can anyone tell me if records exist attesting to such arrangements?
