I am researching the individual soldiers of the 208th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, and the 28th - Company E. I would appreciate any and all non-internet sources of information: obituaries, photos, archived newspaper clippings, things tucked away in attics ... any information! No item is too small or unimportant.

Many thanks,

Joe
morse73@ptd.net

Can anyone explain the following:

RRICO K 13 Rec T PA Volinet

I have not personally viewed the tombstone so can not verify that this is exactly what is on it. Could "PA Volinet" mean Pennsylvania Volunteers and "Rec" actually be "Reg" for regiment.

The stone is for a John Crawford who died in 1908 and is buried in St. Patrick Cemetery, Cambria/Blair County. Apparently the cemetery is actually in Blair County but St. Patrick's church is in Gallitzin, Cambria County.

My Great-Great Grandfather, David Harclerode (also known as "Harkleroad") was a private in the 125th Regiment of the PA Infantry, Co. E. He was wounded at the Battle of Antietam. He laid unconscious on the battlefield for 4 days until he was found. He survived the Civil War and held 5 children. He lived till 1911.

I am planning a trip to Antietam in June. I would be willing to take photos of names of solidiers from this regiment, if they appear on a monumet there.

It would be interesting to hear about other people who may of fought alongside David. So please contact me. I would be interested in any stories that may of been past down the family about your relative's experiences in the Civil War. Perhps we might even be related! The Harclerodes tended to intermarry with such families as the Diehls, the Wyles, and the Ritcheys.

I have a great grandfather, Daniel Klock from St. Thomas, Franklin County, PA who(according to family history)went to Gettysburg after the 3 day battle to help bury the dead. He came back with a rifle and sabre (which we have).

Would the local newspapers have "asked for help in burying our dead" that people (and he specifically) would have responded to? How long after the 3 day battle would the papers have asked for help?

Thank you. St. Thomas is about 15-25 miles west of Gettysburg - I assume he would have gone by horse and buggy or just by horse -- age about 16 at the time.

Hi,
I am having a little trouble with my 2nd Greatgrandfather's civil war records. I have the original discharge document! When the copies came from the archives, i was thinking they sent me the wrong person, but after reading further I am finding that it is my relative. There are 2 papers that I question. 1 is a discharge after serving 3 months (not the discharge document that I have) and another has both enlistment and discharge dates of both documents. Is it common for my relative to have enlisted, discharged 3 months later (serving his term) and enrolled again and serve for 3 years? Also, no mention of his family is ever made, just his requests for a bigger pension as his conditioned worsened...it that normal?
Many thanks
;)Christine

peferably with out a lot of pounding head on wall...

I was told some intresting family history yesterday concerning my grt grt grandfather.
According to my 2nd(?)cousin while serving during the civil war( which has been confirmed) during Gettysburg or shortly there after he was taken prisoner(sp). and at some point he usig a wooden spoon dug his way out of the camp and made it back north. I am assuming to home but who knows. She was not that clear. but she did remember a trunk in her grandfather ( my grt grandfather) attic that held a full union uniform, pension records, and a wooden spoon that he supposdly used to dig out which when she was young got burned in a fire.
His name was Benjamin Franklin Frampton and he enlisted in Mackensburg (not sure is that is how that is spelled but that is the way she pronounced the name of the town) Pa along with at least 2 of his cousins with the same first names ( there were a total of 4 Benjamin's of that generation all cousins someone had really warped sense of hummor) And apparently 2 of the Benjamins were in the same unit perhaps diffrent companies. I am asking about the one who remained in Pa not the one who moved to Mo.
Anyway if there is a way to locate a list of POw's from Pa with out going through each camp's listings by yr and dates because I dont know this information and neither does my cousin it sure would be helpful.
thank you
Sara Russo

Hi! My gg grandfather Alexander Winfield Bartholomew was suppose to be in the Civil War, In his Obit it states that he was in the Civil War. I'm trying to find records of this and so far I have hit a brick wall. He passed away in 1905 leaving his wife Amanda Jane and 11 children. I looked him up on this site that someone had posted about the list of Civil War Veterans. I had found this one which really doesn't say much. I have no other information on him about the Civil War. Only that is was a Civil War Veteran.
Bartholomew A.

This unit is not specifically mentioned in Bates' "History of the Pennsylvania Volunteers". The brief description of its service in Dyer'c "Compendium of the War of the Rebellion" indicates that it was at Oyster Point in Camp Hill, PA, on June 28-29, 1863, and was involved in the Battle (skirmish) of Oyster Point with elements of Albert Jenkins' cavalry units. Can anyone provide any further information about this unit?

Michael Kennedy, an uncle of my grandmother, was a private in Company F of the 30th Militia Regiment. Less than three months after being mustered out, he was drafted and served the rest of the war as a private in Company D, 52nd PA Regiment along the South Carolina coast.

Thanks for any help with this.

Seeking information about Private John Warner 18th Pennsylvania Cavalry Company E. According to records from the Pennsylvania State Archives he enlisted on September 13, 1862 and mustered in on September 30, 1862 as a private. The record from the archives shows that he deserted on July 15, 1863 at Hagerstown, Maryland. At the Old Courthouse in Winchester, Virginia there is a signature on the wall for a John Warner. The Old Court House was a place where Union prisoners were kept. Was John Warner captured instead of deserting his unit?

Searching for photos of Civil War vets from York PA and surrounding counties

I am working to benefit the York County Heritage Trust to try to compile as many images as possible of Civil war veterans from York PA and the nearby counties. (Adams, Lancaster, Dauphin, Franklin, Perry, Cumberland, etc.) While identified photos are most sought, partially ID'd and unidentified photos of soldiers/veterans are also accepted. The soldier or veteran does not have to be in uniform in the image. Images may be of the veteran before, during or after his service period. Multiple images of the same person at different times, places, etc are welcomed. Originals, very good quality reprints and high quality digital file images (preferably 300dpi or better) are all equally welcomed. The more information the donor can provide about the subject with the image, the better. While the 87th PVI is most desirable as it was the most local regiment, images of any & all local veterans who served in any capacity with any branch of the services on either side of the conflict during the war between the states is welcomed.
These images would become part of the archival collection of the York County Heritage Trust, and could possibly be included in a published project we are currently working toward putting together. In donating an image the donor would be allowing the YCHT to include the image, along with any documentation and correspondence that accompanies it, in it's archives to be available to researchers and possibly used in future publications.

Image donors may contact Christopher Buckingham via reply to this post or at the e-mail address of Lookin4treasure@aol.com

additionally

Lila Fouhrman-Shaull, YCHT head librarian/archivist may be reached at lshaull@yorkheritage.org

Thank you,
Christopher Buckingham

Thank you, any informatin will be helpful, Dawn

Irvin Myers' book "We Might As Well Die Here" states on page 87 that 3 companies were detached for provost guard duty. They were Co. A, B & K. They did not fight at Gettysburg, but regrouped with them on the 53rd's march through Maryland after the battle. Yet the Pa. monument at Gettysburg has A, B & K listed with the other companies, including the soldiers names who participated in the battle. Which is correct? I have 6 ancestors who were in Co. A and I would like to know if they were at the battle or not. Any help is appreciated.

During the year 1820, Yellow Fever hit the Delaware Valley and killed many of the residents. Records show that 7 of my Williamson and Harlan family ancestors died in Chester County in 1820: Joshua Williamson, blacksmith, his wife Ruth Harlan, and Ruth parents, Caleb Harlan and Margaret Cloud. My ggg-grandfather, Lott Williamson, was born that year, but went twith his brother, Robert, to live with the George Darlington family until they reached adulthood. Lott later served in the Civil War in the Company A, 51st Infantry Regiment Pennsylvania, Unit #2303. I know he married Mary Stockley, of Delaware, but that's all I know. Any connections?

Okay, so a lot of my ancestors fought in the various wars in the US's history including the Civil War, Revolutionary war, War of 1812, etc. And I know what company they were with, and I was wondering, is there any way to find out what battles they fought in? For instance, my family didn't live that far from Gettysburg, and I'm fairly certain no one died in that battle from my family, but it'd be interesting to find out if they were there. Thanks!

Katie

Are there files on military service and/or pensions for civil war regiments from PA anywhere besides NARA?
I am trying to find info on someone who supposedly died in Libby prison in Jan 1865 but his military file from NARA was incomplete. Does anyone know if Richmond, VA would have death certificates for prisoners who died there? Thanks!

141st PA regiment/ Co A Infantry

I have found that my Gr-Grandfather MOSES WHEELER was enlisted in Co. A the 141 regiment from Pennsylvania on 18 Aug 1862 and was wounded and captured in battle at Wilderness, Va and captured the same day. Family legend says he was taken to Andersonville Prison, but I have not been able to find his name on any of the lists. He ended up in Sickel General Hospital in Alexandria, Va after the war. Does anyone have any information as to where he went from there or what prison he was in?
Janet

I'm trying to locate a photo of the 68th Pennsylvania Infantry Company A. My husbands g-g-grandfather Alexander Mervine was in the 68th and we would love to have a photo.
