I have info from Virginia Regimental History series of his service in the infantry - 10th Va. Co. L volunteers (Madison County).
Now think he may have joined up with Va. 4th Calvary, Co. C., Madison Cavalry in 1863.
The Virginia Regimental History series on the 4th Calvary by Kenneth L. Stiles is out of print.
Haven't tried National Archives yet, but will if it looks promising.
