I have info from Virginia Regimental History series of his service in the infantry - 10th Va. Co. L volunteers (Madison County).

Now think he may have joined up with Va. 4th Calvary, Co. C., Madison Cavalry in 1863.

The Virginia Regimental History series on the 4th Calvary by Kenneth L. Stiles is out of print.

Haven't tried National Archives yet, but will if it looks promising.

Webb Brothers, buried at Long Creek Cemetery, Dallas Co., TX...Union or CSA Veterans

I am researching the families buried at Long Creek Cemetery, Sunnyvale, Dallas County, Texas as part of the 150 Anniversary project.
While compiling a list of Veterans, I found two half brothers, sons of Henry H. Webb, John (born about 1834) and Jehu E. Webb (1843-1910), both born in Illinois and died in Texas. Both grave markers have only their names and Company K, 7 Missouri Infantry. I have not been able to determine whether they served in Union or Confederate Units. After a brief check of online sources, I thought I would post a query here to see if someone more knowable might be able to help me.

Hello, I recently wrote a book about the 55th North Carolina. Its being published by McFarland & Company titled The 55th North Carolina in the Civil War: A History and Roster, and is coming out at the end of May. The regiment served in Lee's army from May 1863 to Appomattox, and were one of the first units on the field at Gettysburg and participated in Pickett's Charge, where it is said three members went farther than any other CSA soldier. Its on sale now at Amazon or www.mcfarlandpub.com Thanks Jeff Girvan

Hello,
I'm researching Company D, of the 55th North Carolina Infantry for our family history. Does anyone know of any books (especially primary sources) written about this unit? I did find a couple references on the Internet and I have the unit's history from the NARA (as well as my Great Great Great Grandfather's war record. I was hoping to find someone who might have written a research text or something on the order of "Killer Angels".
Also, does anyone know of a re-enactor group portraying this unit? Our group re-enacts the "Tom Green Rifles" (4th Texas). Please contact me if you can help...I would be very appreciative of any assistance.
Barb Selletti

Hi, Mary,
In my excitement, I realized I didn't answer you. Tony & I live in Chester, Delaware Co., PA (yes, were on opposite sides of the country). Tony's parents are/were Robert F. & Marilyn Lorman Gargiulo. I'm sure you didn't meet him, although both of us sent a lot of time on the Jersey coast growing up, You might have met his older sister, Roxanne Gargiulo Fechtman or their elder half sister, Sharon Gargiulo, though. There's a story here of mini series length to explain it all. As I said, email me at my hotmail addy & I'll explain in depth.
Your father-in-law, if I remember correctly, died in Point Pleasant Beach. I practically grew up there. We had a place down there off Ocean Avenue; down near the inlet. It's so different now...makes me sad to visit. I just hate those condos.
I can't wait to compare notes with you. How fortunate to find someone who has had so much research experience on our Schambachs.
Do you see Tony's Aunt Betty (Gargiulo-Adriance) at all? She's out on your coast. Uncle Ken was the one who told us about the Schambach who printed Confederate money. You know, that's funny, because I just read (today) about that subject. Seems there was a contract in place with printers in New York, before the outbreak of the War and they honored their agreement (at least for a short while). That's pretty cool to think our Schambach's were involved in that and it makes perfect sense now! I will close for now...I'm working on a new gown for the two re-enactor Christmas parties we've been invited to attend...so much work, so little time! Will talk to you again soon.
Barb

I am searching for a a Charles Nichols who died, apparently as a sergeant in the Union army, in July 1862 near Richmond, VA. In his Bible, picked up by a Confederate soldier, was an inscription to Charles from his sister Rachel.
Some have suggested this is Private Charles E Nichols of Co. D, 83rd PA; however, I have no evidence that his middle initial was E; and the Confederate identified him as "Sergent Nicolous, a sergent of the yankeys."
I have searched the 1860 Erie Co., PA census, where the above private enlisted, and find no Charles Nichols in residence. The soldiers and sailors NARA database did not turn up anything either.

CO. G.H.G.
1808-1892

The ribbon is red and about 1 1/2 inch wide and 6 inches long.

Being a voulunteer here at Andersonville Civil war POW site, I know that the 2nd reserves were guards here at Andersonville,,, and I know the 2nd Georgia Home Guards were different and not here. I have been told they were established 1808 and were not a vital part of the civil war as battle soldiers for the most part, but feel they were on the lines as Sherman passed through. Could anyone tell me the history of this Guard and what the value of this ribbin might be? Im not looking to sell, but do want to know the history.

Thanks for any details.

He was a doctor in Miller County Ulman , Brumley and country area around the community. He was married and a country doctor that delivered My Grandmother in 1883 and her Bro & sisters and many others in the area. She later was His office and housekeeper and took care of Him in His last years.
Not sure if He was a doctor in war or became one later. He talked about Lyon at the Battle of Wilson Creek. We Once had a picture of Him in uniform but since lost. Also not sure if He was a Confederate or Union. (I think Confrederate) There are flags put on the graves of old soldiers and His grave in the Gott Cemetary Miller County Missouri.

Appomattox parolee list?

I am trying to put together a war record for Samuel Turnbull, a Confederate officer in the 5th Florida Infantry Regiment (and my great great grandfather). I have found some sources that say he was at Appomattox, but would like to confirm it off of a list of parolees if possible.

Also, he was taken prisoner at Wilderness.Does anyone know how I can find information on this (any Union records--either on his capture or exchange)? Or does anyone know how to tell if a soldier was wounded, etc. in battle or otherwise took a leave?
Thanks for any help out there.

Cox", "Champion Cox", "Dick Cox")

All my existing info says he served with the 1st TN Infantry (Consolidated), but I think he probably served in the 27th TN Infantry before that 1st/27th consolidation took place.

Can anyone confirm this, or at least point me in the right direction?

Thanks!

I am sure that most of you are aware the up to 50,000 British North Americans took part in the Civil War. I just want to let you know that we here in Atlantic Canada have not forgotten them. I am a member of 20th Maine , Co I , reenactors and besides regular acitvities, our unit has been locating the burial sites of veterans here in the Atlantic Provinces. To date we have located approx 60, and we are performing a graveside service for each one and placing a GAR marker. You can see this list on our website at <http:www3.nbnet.nb.ca/termid/20MaineI/home.htm>
Most of the men are Maine Veterans, however there are also veterans from NY, MICH, MA, RI, the Navy and also the Confederate Army and Navy. Please check out our site and if you can add to our list of men buried here in Eastern Canada, please contact me as it is our goal to locate and remember all of the veterans.
Mary Edwards Walker, born in Oswego, NY, was a pioneer woman physician and dress reformer and became known for her insistence on wearing men's clothes, which was more radical than the "bloomers" of other reformers. Miss Walker served with distinction as a war nurse and a surgeon with the Union Army during the Civil War. After the war she returned to her small medical practice and independent suffrage work.

In June 1861, Hiram Berdan, a NY inventor and the nation's foremost marksman, won approval from President Lincoln for his idea of forming his own regiment of sharpshooters. Handpicked by Berdan, men from companies in eight different states were recruited directly into Federal service as U.S. volunteers. A number of additional regiments were created this way during the War; all received the standard uniform of the U. S. Army.

The first and second regiments of U. S. Sharpshooters, which resulted from Berdan's request, were issued instead dark green uniforms of Berdan's own design that set them apart from the regular infantry regiments and earned them the nickname "Green Coats." Their green forage caps were decorated with a black plume.

Members of Berdan's Sharpshooters, "rarely missed a man at a mile," according to a Rebel soldier.

For your information, In "Echos of Glory, Arms and Equipment of the Union," a Time-Life book, is a photo of handsome, bearded Pvt. C. Maltby carrying a Prussian-pattern knapsack of fur-covered calfskin.

Leroy Pope Walker (1817-1884) served in 1861 as the first Confederate secretary of war. Walker was appointed because he was a leading Alabama secessionist. As war secretary, he had little or no influence on military strategy, but he worked hard to raise troops and obtain war materials for the Confederacy. The success of the Confederate armies during the first year of the Civil War owed much to his efforts. Leroy P. Walker, born in Huntsville, AL, later became a Confederate brigadier general.

BIO: A photo of Isaac D. PAULL of Taunton, Massachusetts taken on a furlough by Taunton local photographer H. B. Enlisted and commissioned 1st Lieut. 39th MA Volunteer Infantry Co. F. August 1862, served in defenses of Washington until July 1863. Transferred with his unit to the Army of the Potomac and served through the fall of 1863 in vicinity of Rappahannock River, VA, participated in Mine Run Campaign in November, passed winter of 1863-64 at Mitchell's Station near the Cedar Mountain battlefield. Fought in Battle of Wilderness, May 5-7, 1864, and at Spotsylvania Court House. Mortally wounded at Spotsylvania, 8 May 1864.

Please reference that magazine for details of burial and reburial, but ultimately the King David Lodge (Taunton) commissioned Philo T. WASHBURN, a Taunton Mason and mortician to retrieve Paull's body, which was positively identified by his teeth, Masonic membership card and a mark on his arm. A mangled minie ball was recovered from Paull's body.

Tim, I am trying to find some/ any info on a Capt JTCook, who was stationed in Galveston with a Texas Regiment. He was stationed there during the capture and subsequent retaking by CSA, he remained until end of war. Also he was one who left and went to Brazil to form a new colony. Anything you can find will be helpful. Have a great New Year! Jack

Trying to locate a battle that took place at the Orange and Alexandria RR in Oct-Nov 1863. Have been unable to find a listing in any muster roll for Josiah Rice of Perry County, PA.
He was captured at the above mentioned place and sent to Savannah as a POW. If anyone knows what Union forces were present from PA will you please let me know? This is a
back door attempt to find this man as the traditional means are not working.
Thanks!

Henry C. Murray, 156th OH Infantry, Co. H

Looking for information on the 156th Ohio Infantry. This was a National Guard Unit that was called up late in the C.W (1863 or 1864). I believe one of the soldiers, Private Henry C. Murray, was my gg-grandfather (Henry Clay Murray) of Preble County, OH. Henry Clay Murray was born in Preble County, OH is 1845. He lived in both Preble and Darke Counties in OH. When he died in 1913, he was farming in Wayne County, IN near Hagerstown. Was my great-grandfather the same as the Henry C. Murray in the 156th OH Infantry? My grandmother actually told me (probably a tall-tale) that he fought on both sides - GAR and CSA. Need any information to begin to unravel his history. Thanks in advance.
Hello,
I have made it my lifelong (remaining) endeavor to locate the gravesites of all soldiers who were in the 38th Alabama Infantry, CSA. So far, I have located just 80 of over 850 known 38th'ers. So I need your help.

I have set up a temporary website which lists the names of the soldiers which were on the 1862 Muster Rolls. Please go to this site and see if you know where any of these men are buried. Any information will be greatly appreciated....

The site is: http://hometown.aol.com/ala38thcoa/myhomepage/index.html

Also, I have located over 3000 graves of Confederate soldiers. If you would like me to check my database for anyone you may be seeking, please email me......

Thanks for your time,

Will Garrick
Ala38thCoA@aol.com

Hi,
I just posted an old newspaper item from the New York Herald that reported many names of wounded and dead at a battle in Winchester, VA, in 1862. The surnames listed are included. These are the names of the men of the 5th Ohio who were wounded in this engagement.

This was scanned from an original issue of the NY Herald dated March 30, 1862, and you can see it online here:

http://theoldentimes.com/5th_oh_wounded_winchester.html

I hope it's helpful!

Barbara
http://theoldentimes.com/civil_war_news.html
http://theoldentimes.com

Account by Color Sgt. Jacob B. Funk from battle at Gettysburg, July 2, 1863, in a wheat field said to have changed hands six times during the evening:

"Just then I came up to where some Prisoners were that had been taken a short time before. The bullets were falling like hail & the Guard that had the Prisoners ran and left the Prisoners go when they immediately picked up Guns and began to shoot our men. I saw (one) pick up a Gun and looking round he spied me with the Colors of the Old Keystone state immediately he leveled his Gun and ordered me to surrender my Colors or he would shoot me but I thought that was rather a saucy demand & I could not see the point...I took Leg Bail for security and increased the distance between him and me very fast. I had to jump a stone fence and came very near loosing my ballance but I managed to get over. I then went straight ahead when directly I heard the report of a Gun just behind me. I just concluded that was for me, and sure enough the Ball struck my arm four or five inches from the shoulder passing under the Bone and coming out in the chest near the arm pit. I called out for some one to take the Colers one of the men ran out & took them & I then made tracks to get out of farther danger...after leaving the Battle field I went about 2 miles and then got my wound dressed."

Although wounded, Funk survived, was discharged in December of 1863 and reenlisted as a veteran volunteer. On May 24, 1864, at the Battle of Laurel Hill, VA, he was mortally wounded.

-- Excerpt, "Voices of the Civil War, Gettysburg, Tell My Father I Died With My Face to the Enemy," a Time-Life book Spelling as it appeared on original letter.

Monroe was born 1843 in "Northwestern GA", went to medical school in New Orleans, died in Rankin CO, MS in 1898. He appears in the 1870 Census in Atlanta, GA. I would appreciate any suggestions about how to find out what unit he served in.

GETTYSBURG, PA: At 8 P.M Jubal Early's Confederates, the brigades of Harry Hays and Isaac E. Avery, charged onto the crest of Cemetery Hill into the Federal batteries. The Rebels, disorganized by darkness and heavy casualities, were driven from the hilltop by a counterattack by the brigade of Samuel S. Carroll and elements of Major General Carl Schurz's division.

Colonel Isaac E. Avery of the 6th North Carolina was mortally wounded by Federal artillery fire as he led a brigade up the slope of Cemetery Hill. As he lost consciousness, he scrawled a last, jumbled message to his subordinate, Major Samuel M. Tate - "Major: Tell my father I died with my face to the enemy."

-- Excerpt "Voices of the Civil War, Gettysburg," Time-Life Book.

Sudderth at Camp Ford, TX?

My husband's 2xgreat grandfather, Abraham Sudderth, lived in Wood Co., TX, and reportedly served as a guard at the CSA prison camp at Camp Ford, TX, near Tyler. Unfortunately, I've not been able to document his service or to find rosters of guards there. Anyone with any ideas?
Thanks in advance, Jerri Eoff Sudderth

Welcome to the first Rootsweb forum devoted to researching your Civil War ancestors. We hope you enjoy it. You may want to insert in your post the following: the name of your Civil War veteran, which side he or she (not a few women disguised themselves to enlist) fought for, the regiment and company in which they fought, the state and county from which they came, branch of service; cavalry, infantry etc, and all other information you wish to share.

Good luck and enjoy,
Tim Hashaw
