David Warren Knight, 7th Infantry

A cousin has several letters written by David Warren Knight of RI to his father [William Warren Knight] at home in RI, during the Civil War. I have seen the letters but do not have copies. This cousin has said that David was in the 7th Regiment of the Rhode Island Infantry. I have tried numerous online searches, including at Ancestry.com, but I am unable to find him. He is not listed in the index in the book "The Seventh Regiment Rhode Island Volunteers in the Civil War 1862 - 1865" by William Hopkins.
I am planning a trip to Washington D.C. and was hoping to have a little more info before going to NARA.
Any further information or suggestions most welcome.
Thanks.
Cindy
