John Raven Mathewes a rice plantation owner from Charleston SC is the reason. The Mathewes family of Charleston,
set up summer quarters in Habersham County in the 1830s. They migrated there during and after the Civil War, and became permanent residents in 1867. John Raven Mathewes had a grandson of the same name. This John Raven Mathewes was Captain of Mathewes Company Heavy Artillery Division. South Carolina. Evidently some bonds were formed between your ancestor and the other individuals you mentioned with the Mathewes family. John Raven Mathewes Captain CSA is my great great grandfather on my mothers side.
