I have done extensive research on Culpeper's battery with plans to publish a book on the battery. James Avin enlisted in the spring of 1862, was taken prisoner at Ft. Gaines, AL on 8/8/1864, was exchanged 1/4/1865. He was temporarily attached to the 5th Co. Washington Artillery late in the war and thus, luckily missed being captured again at Ft. Blakely, AL....Do you have a photo, letters etc..from James Avin that I could add to my narrative? Thanks for your help.
Rett Floyd

Sadie:

I am not sure if this is just for "fun" research or to join the UDC; if it is for UDC, you will need to find either an 1850 and/or 1860 Census Record, Will, obit, or similar source that proves the relationship to the ancestor that you are certain is yours. I will not say that is always easy, but it is often possible. Forewarned, it is often necessary to find a different ancestor when you can't prove the one you want.

I am not sure what steps you have made in that direction, but I would be happy to help, if I can -- I am a Life Member of the SCV.
Hi Barbara. Nice to meet you. Yes, my post WAS quite a while back and I have found a bit of information on the Duncans since that time and have what I believe to be MB's father and grandfather and a bit about them. I haven't gone back any farther than that. I have LIzzie in my tree, but never pursued her line. I just noticed that I DO have a marriage record from the SC Baptist Deaths and Marriages, 1866-87, compilation which states "At the residence of the bride's mother, Feb. 6, 1883, by Rev. C.T. Scaife, Mr. W.J.D.Williams of York County and Miss Lizzie Duncan, of Union Co., SC." It looks like all of the Duncan daughters married at home.

I can write you up a composite of the information I have (along with references) if you want to email me and send your email address. My email is prairedust@gmail.com. I will look forward to hearing from you!

realize your query was some while back, however I am just now
trying to locate Duncan history. The grandmother I lived with:
Mary V. Williams (Ryan)was the grandaughter of Marion B. Duncan and Permelia Ann Jefferies. Their daughter, "Lizzie"
Teriza Elizabeth Duncan (Williams) was her mother.

Lizzie married William Jefferson Davis Williams in SC in the home of her Mother. This was my great grandfather with whom
I lived until his death, at which time I was eleven years old.
I only knew of them living where I reside, Birmingham, Al, but have not researched enough to find out when they moved to Alabama.
Barbara Edmonson,thedmonsons@yahoo.com

Ok I finally have some information to give.

He was born around 1830, most likely in Ireland
He died 18 Jan 1869 in SC, most likely around Charleston
He is buried at St. Lawrence Cemetery in Charleston.
His father was William John Nolan called John
His mother was Ann Garey Nolan
His wife was Mary Madden but they were not married in 1860.
His has at least one son William Farrel sometimes called Willie Farel. the spelling of Farel is always different. Willie was born in 1865.

I hope this information helps.

I found him in the 1860 census in Charleston, SC listed with his siblings. He is listed as a carpenter so that fits with cabnetmaker. His father and one of his brothers worked as wheelwrights so he might have done that as well. I knew that Catherine was his sister bc she is my gg grandmother, I can varify Michael as well, the Ann that is listed is either the mother or the sister but i believe they have the age incorrect.
Shubert, age 36, born in PA, with wife, Agness, age 25, b. TN and children - Amanda, b MS; Ann, B TN; and James and Mary, b. MS (Forgot to record their ages.) Living with them or next door was a J. Perry, age 63, b. Virginia with wife, Nancy 53, b. NC and chidren - "Pochahuntas" (F), age 21, b. TN; Lucy, age 12, and ? Arbi(e or s) (F), age 10 both born in MS. The men were carpenters, which I have found in some of the Shuberts. I hope this helps.
