James B Likens' NARA File

I ordered the COMPLETE file for James B. Likens from the National Archives and Records Administration just before the prices increased. The entire file is mostly James B. Likens PRIOR to service in the 35th Texas Cavalry. There is very little in this file, so I felt I should let everyone be aware in order to save money.

I am currently working on a book about Likens' 35th Texas Cavalry so if anyone has anything to share, please let me know.

I have a copy of a pension application for the widow of Howard Bryant. It states that he served in Company K of Liken's Cavalry. He was born in Alabama in 1823 and died while in the service of Liken's Regiment in October 1864. I don't have any details of his service or death. The pension application is the only documentation I have found.

I would like to contact anyone with information and/or would like to exchange information about Liken's Regiment. This unit was one of the last organized Texas cavalry regiments. Documentation concerning this unit is scarce at best. The battalions of Liken's and Burns were combined in September 1863. Their main function was one of several regiments guarding the Texas Coast between Harrisburg and Matagorda Bay against the threat of Federal invasion. In early 1864, the 35th was ordered to Louisiana and participated in the Red River Campaign. The regiment did not return to Texas until early 1865 where they were dismounted and stationed in the vicinity of the lower Sabine River area. As the war was winding down, Liken's Regiment is found in Galveston. In May 1865, the remaining members were sent to Hempstead. They received Honorable Discharges from the service of the Confederate States of America and were told to go home.
