My gggg-grandfather was Capt. Levi English. According to family stories he served as a Capt. in Confederate Army. At one point in his life he served as a Texas Ranger Scout. Is it possible that he may have served in this unit? Does anyone know of any other TX units he may have served in?
Any information at all would be extremely helpful.

I'm looking for information on Morgan L. Fitch who rode with Terry's Texas Rangers (Co. H). He was wounded (by his own pistols) in July 1862 at Murfreesboro and discharged.

One of my great great grandfather's was also Morgan L. Fitch but he fought on the Union side (Benton's Cadets also known as Fremont's Bodyguards). I have recently learned that he was born in Mississippi. I wonder if the Texas Morgan Fitch may be the father of the Ohio Morgan Fitch.

I am in the process of requesting records for both of these soldiers but any other information will be most welcomed.

A diary written in Austin County, Texas contains this entry:

Friday July 4, 1862 - ...Last night Mr. Bob King staid here just on from the army spent most of the time in Ken. in the army of the south been from home nearly a year been very sick with Typhoid fever in Ken. Says he heard of Mr. O'brien, sons one is at or near Cairo, Ken. and the other was at Ft. Donnelson at the surrender was either killed or taken prisoner did not know which. Said a Mr. Wilson sent work by him to their mother, their name was Wilson--he (Bob King) went first to Corinth then from there to Vicksburg on the Railroad and then on home some three week since he arrived...

I believe that the men referred to were Robert Henry King, William T. Wilson, and Edwin B. Wilson, all of whom had moved from the Trigg/Caldwell County, KY area to the Washington/Austin County, TX area in the early 1850's. I can't find any records of their service in. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks for any help.

My great, great uncle Bob is mentioned in several letters that Bunting and Ross wrote . These letters are posted on Troy Groves web sight. He was severely wounded at Farminton and left with a family to recover. He made it back to Texas ultimately. I wonder if it is possible that records exist as to the name of this family and any information on how he got home. Any help would be greatly appreciated. He was shot in the hip and the wound never completely healed. Doubt he just rode a horse back home.

My daughter and I are working on a school project and I'm hoping someone here can help us.

One of our relatives fought and was held as a prisoner of war in the American Civil War. We are trying to find out where he fought, what the details are surrounding his capture, imprisonment and release. We would like to know where he was held and under what conditions.

His name was Cuff F. Shaw of Calhoun County, Texas. According to the Certificate of Release of Prisoner of War he was released June 20, 1865. The certificate was signed by A.C. Brady, Major and Provost Marshall in Washington D.C. Does anyone have any ideas of where we can start?

Another simple question for you... was any part of the Civil War actually fought in Texas?

Thanks in advance for your help.

~Michelle

Is anyone familiar with the uniforms of Louisiana or Texas soldiers? I have an ancestor's picture where he's wearing a hat with a leaf crescent and a "7" in the middle. His grey uniform jacket has darker trim on the lapels and vest collar.

His widow's LA pension application:

Target card: BONER, CLARINDA
Applicant Information & Name Variations:
BONER, CLARINDA OSBORNE (ALFRED)
Parish: ORLEANS -- Pages: 16
Soldier Information & Variations:
BONER, GEORGE WHITE
State: TX
Unit: TERRY'S SCOUTS

I have records of his two brothers being in the 4th La. Infty. Co. E. They all lived in Thibodaux, LaFourche, LA.

Can anyone help me make any sense of this Louisiana boy who's both brothers enlisted in the 4th La. Infty., while he wound up in a Texas unit?? I can't find any trace of him in the Texas rosters.
Thanks!

Welcome to the RootsWeb Message board for the 8th Texas Cavalry (Terry's Texas Rangers).

Not to be confused with the Texas Rangers of the Texas frontier or law enforcement, Terry's Rangers were a Confederate Cavalry Regiment that served East of the Mississippi during the War Between the States, 1861-1865. All volunteers, they were universally recognized for their skill and willingness to fight. They served under Generals such as Nathan Bedford Forrest, Joe Wheeler, John A. Wharton, and Thomas Harrison. Following their first battle at Woodsonville, Kentucky in December of 1861, Terry's Rangers went on to participate in the Battle of Shiloh, Forrest's Murfreesboro Raid, the Battle of Perryville, the Battle of Stone's River, Wheeler's Tennessee Raid, the Battle of Chickamauga, the Seige of Knoxvill, the Atlanta Campaign, and the Carolinas Campaign. Their final engagement was at Bentonville, North Carolina on March 21, 1865. Additionally, handpicked men were pulled from their ranks for use in special operations and scouting expeditions. Men from Terry's Rangers formed the core body of Shannon's Special Scouts as the opposed Sherman in his March across Georgia and into the Carolinas.

I am the webmaster for the Online Archives of Terry's Texas Rangers at http://www.TerrysTexasRangers.org. The archive contains online versions of several diaries, letters, reports, books, articles, and photos related to Terry's Rangers. It hosts a discussion forum for general discussions regarding the history of Terry's Rangers. In addition the Online Archives contains an expanded roster that will eventually includes bio pages on each man in the regiment.
