Wright, Horatio Governour or Gouverneur, March 6, 1820 born at Clinton, Conn. July 1, 1841 graduated from West Point (2/52) and appointed 2ndlt., Corps of Engineers; 1842 assistant professor of French at West Point; professor of engineering at West Point; Feb. 28, 1848 1stlt. in charge of the construction Fts. Taylor and Jefferson, Dry Tortugas, Fla. and improvements in Florida; July 1, 1855 capt. April 20, 1861 captured during the abortive effort to destroy the Norfolk Navy Yard's dry dock; April 25, 1861 released; to 1861 assistant chief engineer at Washington, D. C. supervised the construction of Washington, D. C. defenses; chief engineer of Heintzelman's division at the battle of Bull Run, Va. chief engineer of the Port Royal expedition; Aug. 6, 1861 maj. Sept. 14, 1861 briggen., volunteers; Oct. 1, 1861-March 15, 1862 commanded the 3rd Brigade, South Carolina Expeditionary Corps; February 1862 expedition that captured Fernandina, Fla. April 1-July 1, 1862 commanded the 1st Division, Department of the South; at the capture of Hilton Head, S. C. June 1862 Secessionville, S. C. 1862 commanded the land forces in the Florida campaign; July 18, 1862 majgen., volunteers; July 29, 1862 relieved from command at Hilton Head, S. C. C. with William Lilley apparently as a boarder; 1884 completed the Washington Monument; March 6 or 22, 1884 retired; 1890 at 1203 N northwest District of Columbia; July 2, 1899 died at Washington, D. C. and buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
