ANDERSON, MAJOR ROBERT, was born near Louisville, Ky., June 14, 1805. Graduated at U. S. Military academy in 1825. Served in Black Hawk war of 1832 and in Seminole war of 1838. Served as captain in Mexican war, and wounded in battle of Molino del Rey. Promoted to major of artillery, in 1857. Assumed command of Fort Moultrie, November 15, 1860. Not being reinforced, when South Carolina seceded, he transferred his command to Fort Sumter. Forced to surrender Sumter, April 13, 1861. Presented with thanks of the nation on his arrival in New York. Promoted to brigadier-general in May, 1861, and assigned to Department of Cumberland, where he organized the Union Volunteers of Kentucky. Resigned from active service, October 27, 1863. Went to Europe, and died in Nice, October 27, 1871.
