Finding a relative in the CW; James G. MADDUX

I have been searching for where James G. MADDUX served in the CW. He was born in 1842 in Heard County where he and his family resided until the 1890s. He is not at home in the 1864 Joe Brown Census, and according to family legend he did serve.

I have tracked down a ton of Maddux, Maddox, Mattox - but cannot find the James G. MADDUX I seek.

Does anyone have any new/fresh ideas on how to find a relative in the CW? He died before he could apply for a pension, and his headstone is not a military headstone.

His brother Thomas served in the 34th Reg. Company K, but James is not there with him.

Any new ideas, thoughts or information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
