I have learned of 61 families from Burke Co., North Carolina who migrated in 1822 to Habersham Co. in Northeast Georgia and settled in the Nacoochee Valley area.I have been unable to locate any historical details, and would welcome any info about this group. Gold discoveries and/or land sales were possible motivations. I suspect that James Gaddis, and 6 of his 7 sons were part of this group.

I have been searching for where James G. MADDUX served in the CW. He was born in 1842 in Heard County where he and his family resided until the 1890s. He is not at home in the 1864 Joe Brown Census, and according to family legend he did serve.

I have tracked down a ton of Maddux, Maddox, Mattox - but cannot find the James G. MADDUX I seek.

Does anyone have any new/fresh ideas on how to find a relative in the CW? He died before he could apply for a pension, and his headstone is not a military headstone.

His brother Thomas served in the 34th Reg. Company K, but James is not there with him.

Any new ideas, thoughts or information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Looking for info on my GGF Lloyd C. Shivers, born 1861.His mother listed as Marcella Moorer, born 1844,and widowed.I don't know if this was her maiden name. She is listed as living with an aunt, marg.Tager, who my father remembers that last name from his youth.Found C.Loyl Shivers listed as pauper ,age 9, on census records from 1870.My Dad said that could be right, they didn't ask about those things back then.I know he married Mary Emma Sharpe, born june 1865.I just can't seem to get past the census records from 1870.Marcella is listed as living with the family as mother-in-law after his marriage to Emma and after my grandfather was born. Any info would be great. Thanks in advance.

Researching a Military Unit History

Hello, I have been searching the internet trying to find out some detailed information about the military unit my ancestor was in. Unfortunately there is not unit history for it online anywhere, all I have been able to find is the divisions/brigades it was a part of and the list of engagements it fought in. In am interested in learning the part that the unit played in every engagement they were in, where they were on the battle field and witch brigades they were directly confronting. How does one go about researching this kind of information? What kinds of resources are available to learn this kind of detailed information?

If I am able to gather enough information, I may write a book about it or I will at the very least post it on rootsweb so everyone can benefit from it.

The Unit I am concerned with is the 4th Battalion Georgia Sharpshooters. Like I said, I have learned when the unit was formed and when and where it surrendered but I am just trying to learn the details.

Thanks in advance
I would like info on the 36th Ga Inf. 2nd Lt Robert Thomas Bridges was listed as a deserter Richmond Va March 20 1865. However, he was in Nashville Tn being tried for murder by Federal Gen Army Court Martial. He sentenced to hang, later was pardoned more less and died natural cause 1899 Limestone County Ala. He had been captured at Tunnell Hill, Ga Feb 23 1864. There was much unrest in Northwestern Georgia because of Look Out Mt., Chickamauga, Chattanooga about that time. Since Robert had family same area probably had easy crossing behind Yankee line where he got into trouble.
So I was wondering if 36th was rear guard or guerrilla type force?
Gerald Preas
Dallas Tx

Since we controlled the field there after the battle, I imagine most identified bodies, especially Georgians were sent home to the families. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I'm looking for a regimental history of the 34th Georgia Infantry, (Co A) to see if it jibes with my ancestor's pension file. The file states that he enlisted May, 1862 in Dalton, Georgia and his unit surrendered in Greensboro, NC in April 1865. According to the file, he wasn't with his unit at surrender because he was hospitalized at Savannah, Georgia about two months prior.

According to his War Department record which was furnished to the Tennessee Board of Pension Examiners, he was captured at Vicksburg on July 4, 1863, and paroled with no further record of him.

James Summerlin grave in Atkinson (once Coffee) Co GA field - info???

Hey Everyone - I came across the marker/grave for a James Summerlin (b. abt. 1824, d. 1864) in a field in what is now Atkinson County, Georgia. Does anyone have any info on this guy? His marker states that he "died in defence of the Confederacy in the year 1864". An old family story goes that he was killed while attempting to round up deserters of the army. I believe this might be a son of Hardy Summerlin (b. abt. 1770, m. Penelope Collins). I would appreciate any info anyone might be able to share. I also took some pictures of the site if anyone would like copies (I could e-mail them). Thanks...

Pvt Edwin Jennison. Killed at Malvern Hill while a member of
a Georgia regiment. This is the young man whose picture is
familiar to many from its publication in the American Heritage book on the Civil War. I would like to know his regiment, place of birth and burial, published and unpublished references, and any other information which would be useful for researching his life with a view towards
publication. I am currently researching two other virtually unknown young
soldiers from NY regiments who perished during the war. At this time I would be quite satisfied with a quick response just indicating Pvt Jennison's regiment. With my compliments.
Darden brothers: Bedford Harper Darden (captured at Bermuda Hundred), Henry J. Darden, and Joseph Darden, Butts Co GA, and their cousins, Bedford S. Darden and brother Edmond Burch Darden, Randolph Co GA--served in Civil War. Henry J. Darden is buried in Spotsylvania VA Confederate Cemetery (killed 1863). I visited this cemetery on 12 May 01! I believe these Dardens are kinfolk to my grandfather, Bedford Henry Darden who was born abt 1858, Macon GA. Bedford S. Darden was also killed (New Market VA)--where is he buried? Joseph also died (no dates/info)--where is he buried? In Bedford Harper Darden's civil war pension records, a Mrs. E.F. Bradford, Cherry Street, Macon, GA, was written on one of the pages (1919ish)--Any info on these Darden's would be appreciated! On Edmond Burch's civil war pension records, his wife is Mary F. Shields.

Does anyone have any more info, rosters, troop movements, etc.. Anything would help. I would like to know where they took the troops once captured and if he still fought with them or deserted. He applied for his Confederate pension in TN in 1902.
Thanks for your help!

I recently obtained a copy of a letter written by General William T Wofford dated August 14th 1863, which discusses Federal flags captured by his brigade in it's attack across the wheatfield at Gettsyburg on July 2nd 1863. He states that one flag was captured by Sgt I L Born Co C of the Cobb Legion Infantry, one flag was captured by Private Alfred Norris Co E of the Phillips Legion Infantry, and yet another flag was captured by Private E I Smith of Co E, Phillips Legion. He goes on to discuss a 4th Federal flag which was in the grasp of Private Thomas B Jolly Co B of the Phillips Legion before he was bayonetted and killed by a Federal. A hand to hand melee ensued at this point and Wofford admits the flag was not held by the Confederates. This incident sounds a great deal like the fight for the colors of the 4th Michigan (of Sweitzer's brigade) in which it's Colonel, Harrison Jeffords was mortally wounded AND the Michigan men retained their flag. The Legion went in on the left end of Wofford's line with the Cobb Legion to their right. Upon approaching the wheatfield they hit an opening between Sweitzer's brigade in the wheatfield and Tilton's brigade in the Trostle woods to the north. This allowed them to wrap around the exposed right flank of the 4th Michigan, forcing this unit to fall back in disorder. The unit to the left of the 4th Michigan was the 62nd Pennsylvania. Numerous other Federal units from DeTrobriand's III Corps brigade and Caldwell and Brooks brigades from the II Corps had been in this area. Does anyone have any information reagrding the unit identifications of the three flags captured by Wofford's men?

He was held in Andersonville, GA and was exchanged on 4/1/1865...I know this thanks to the help of some "cousins"...what I want to know is a.) what if I have other family that fought with the north, do I have to go through Ohio's records, where do I find out? and b.) does anyone know where I can find out more about that prison in Andresonville or the exchange? Thanks for your help

Searching for information on Thomas and Bill Yopp. Thomas was the son of Jeremiah yopp and Bill was a servant to the family. Thoams and Bill were constant companions growing up. When the Civil War started Thomas was elected Captain of the 14th Georgia, Co. H Laurens Co., Georgia) and Bill accompanied him.

Bill was given the nickname "Ten Cent Bill," becausehe shined the shoes of the men in the Regiment and performed other duties for ten cents. He surrendered with the men of the 14th at Appomattox Court House.

After the war Bill moved from Laurens Co (Dublin) to Macon, Ga. He worked as bellboy at Brown House in Macon, a porter in an Albany Hotel in New York, was a servant to a family in California, and was a waiter on railroad dining cars. He served ten years as a porter on the privae car of a railroad president. Then he worked on a Navy collier and at Camp Wheeler. His varied career led him around the United States and the world.

In his later years, Bill returned to Georgia to find his former master Thomas destitute and in poor health. Captain Yopp now over eighty years old was moving into the Confederate Soldiers Home near Atlanta. Bill Yopp visited the home often. The board of trustees voted to allow Bill to stay at the Home for as long as he live. At the death of Captain Yopp, 92, Bill made an address expressing his admiration of the kind and generous dispostion of his old master and the respect of each other.

Bill died on June 3, 1836 and was buried in the Confederate Cemetery at Marietta, Georgia. His former master, Captain Thomas Yopp was also buried there. Bill Yopp was the only black person buried in the cemetery. The state of Georgia provided his gravestone, that reads: Drummer Bill Yopp, Co. H, 14th GA INF CSA

I'm writing a book on the 14th Georgia, Any additional information is greatly appreciated!

The Clarke Oconee Genealogical Society (COGS) recently posted a fairly detailed roster I created for company H of Cobb's Legion Cavalry Battalion. This roster can be viewed at http://www.rootsweb.com/~gacogs/onlineresources/companyH.htm and to my knowledge this is the first time anyone has posted such a roster for any of the cavalry companies in this battalion. My great-great grandfather, 2nd Lt. Thomas Jordan Dunnahoo of Athens, was in this company, which was made up of men mostly from Clarke and Jackson Counties.

John Young, Haralson County, Ga, Served in Phillips Legion, Co O Cavalry, as pvt & corporal, POW at Rock Island Prison, from late 1863 and died there in February of 1864. His widow remarried and applied for pension after her 2nd husband died, her name would have been Esther Marie Davis Young Wilson. She was denied as far as I have been able to determine. She was always in Haralson County Ga until her death. Are there records of denied pensions and does anyone know any history of the unit described above? Thanks, DeAnne

Griffin Light Artillery

My gggrandfather Jessie Samples served in an unknown GA unit. Likely from the vicinity of Pike or Griffin Co. I have found no record of him after the war. His widow Elizabeth is to be found in Pike Co in 1860 and received a "salt ration". Was this salt ration indicative of her husband being killed in the war? Incidentally, his son Augustus Franklin Samples was in Griffin Light Artillery and drew a pension from TX and later OK. Is there a central register of the Confederate Dead from GA?? Any suggestion or help will be appreciated. Thanks, Dick
