Searching for Descendants of the 17th Ga. Inf for a History I am Writing

I am starting this message board (but not the administrator) in order to let people be aware I am writing a Regimental History. I am hoping to locate as many descendants, as possible, of the soldiers who served in this unit. I have already heard from about 100 individuals and received brief biographies and photos, letters and interesting stories passed down to be included in my book. I also hope people will use this message board to exchange genealogy information and meet new cousins. For more information about the book see my website at the link http://hometown.aol.com/ldsed/seventeenthgaindex.html
The counties that enlisted men in this unit were: Decatur, Dougherty, Harris, Mitchell, Muscogee, Schley, Stewart, Terrell and Webster.

Andrew J. Kelly
born April 25, 1840
died March 20, 1919
buried at Old Mars Hill Cemetary Decatur Co. Ga.

He is the Father of Harmon Kelly who was the Father of my paternal Grandmother Maude Kelly Simpson formerly of Cairo Ga.

I have a copy of a photo ( my Aunt has the original) showing Andrew J. Kelly in uniform. Our information shows that he served in the 17th, Company D. I have not been able to find anything on Company D. I understand he was wounded more than once and returned to the unit each time. He was a Private according to what I have here. Any information you have will be appreciated. I can scan & send the photo if you are interested.

RKS
Army of Georgia - 17th A.C.

A diary was found by my grandfather, Bayliss Henry McCain in the 1930’s in a house that was being restored in Albuquerque New Mexico. It passed down to my mother, Katherine McCain Schoedinger, who copied it and gave to the University of New Mexico for safe keeping. The following are what she copied and her notes:

Reverend Thomas Harwood was a member of an organization called the “Christian Commission”, a volunteer organization which supplied creature comforts and religious materials to professional chaplains for distribution to the troops. According to civil war records, Rev. Harwood was present at muster until June 30, 1863. From July 21, 1863 to August 31, 1863, he was ill and returned to the regiment on September 1, 1863. On November 18, 1863 he was hospitalized with dysentery. He was released to the regiment on December 31, 1863. He was back in the hospital on January 23, 1864. He made chaplain on January 28, 1864. From February 4-29, he was ill at Vicksburg, Mississippi. He was wounded on August 10, 1864. The diary is one of many, but this one records from April 1, 1865 to July 16, 1865.

He mentions that he was in this army. He lists the following organization:
The 14th & 20th A.C. which constitute the Army of Georgia and also left wing of Sherman’s Army took the left. Commanded by the 15th & 17th A.C. Major General O. O. Howard.
Synopsis of the Army:
17 A. C: Major Gen Frank P. Blair
1 Div: Brig. Gen Manning T. Force
1 Brig: Brig Gen John W. Fuller (27th & 39th; __18th Mo., __64th Ill
2Brig: Brig Gen. John W. Sprague (25th Wis; 35th N.J; 43rd ___, 63rd__
3 Brig: Gen. J Tillson (10th Ill, 32nd Wis; 25th Ind
2 Div: not listed
3 Div: Maj. Gen. Leggett
1 Brig: Gen. C. Ewing (31st, 45th, 30th Ill
2 Brig: Gen. Holland (32nd, 14th, 15th Ill
3 Brig: Brig. Gen W. W. Belknap (11th, 13th, 15th, 16th Iowa
If you would like a copy of this diary, email me at JudyLehm@aol.com.

Judy Lehman
