William enlisted as a private at Columbia City, Whitley Co., Indiana on April 21, 1861 in Company E, 17th Indiana Infantry. He was commissioned 2nd Lt. on May 1, 1864, 1st Lt. on June 21, 1864 and a Captain on November 19, 1864. He was discharged February 2, 1865 at Gravelly Springs, Mississippi.
Prior to the Civil War he took part in Walker's Filibuster which amounted to an attempt to take over the government of Nicaragua. he apparently enlisted in this endeavor while teaching down in Arkansas.
Can anybody tell me more about this man or the 17th Indiana which was part of the famous Wilder's Lightning Brigade or the Filibuster by Richard Walker??????
