I'm researching the 63rd Indiana Volunteer Infantry regiment, hoping to eventually write a book on them. I would appreciate anyone who had an ancestor or relative in the regiment sharing information, letters, family stories with me. I have done a lot of research on their actions and movements but would like more on the actual lives of the soldiers and what happened to them after the war. My email is hoagmatt@yahoo.com.
Thanks,
Matt Hoagland
Bloomington, IN

Obadiah Oscar Hall was my great-grandfather. He was born around May 1885 in Tennessee. His parents were William H.B. Hall and Tabitha (Talitha?) Dew. He married Arizona Belle Weaver 17 April 1904 in Knoxville, TN. They had two children Pernie Ruth & Emma Edith. According to divorce papers Obadiah deserted Arizona in 1909. The paper indicates that perhaps he was in Indiana. I am trying to find where he went after he left Tennessee and to find the time and place of his death.
Thank you so much for looking for this information. I really appreciate your help.

I'm not sure if the John Hendricks you found in Shelbyville is the one who was married to Sarah. He is listed in the 1860 Census as a farmer in Van Buren Twp. However, situations change and this could be him.

All I'm sure about is that Sarah is listed as a widow in the 1870 Census and is still living in Van Buren Township near Fountaintown.

It is a mystery to me what happened to John, since I can find no record of him in any cemetery in Shelby County.

Thanks so much for your help! I'm printing your reply to investigate further.

Judith
The US IRS Tax Assessment lists have a John Hendricks of Shelbyville who is listed as a Retail Liquor Dealer in Sept. 1864. I don't know if this means he was actually alive then, or if they were just trying to collect tax then.
(Note: index says Henricks; image clearly says Hendricks). I don't know if this is yours.

The Civil War Pension Index: General Index to Pension Files, 1861-1934 lists 5 women named Sarah Hendricks whose husbands served:
Jacob W. Hendricks Sarah M. Hendricks
James C. Hendricks Sarah E. Hendricks
Joseph A. Hendricks Sarah E. Hendricks
Miles Hendricks Sarah J. Hendricks
William C. Hendricks Sarah F. Hendricks
If he'd died in the war I'd think she would have filed for a pension. I also see no John Hendricks in that index who is listed as having a wife Sarah.
Robert Crittenden is said to have died in Nicaragua in 1855 at age 25, but I cannot find a statement that explains his presence there. In his record there is an alternative spelling of his name as Minas Goodall.

The Report of the Adjutant General of the State of Indiana Volume 5 page 149 had him listed as a recruit. It also noted that he was drafted but there was no residence listed for him.

You might want to consider getting a copy of the Index to Muster Rolls for him from the Indiana State Archives. There is a description of the records at http://www.in.gov/icpr/2888.htm#muster and a sample record. Usually it is better to order a service record from the state archives if you are uncertain about the soldier because it is usually cheaper than the one from the National Archives.

U.S. Colored Infantry

I came across a grave marker in Crown Hill Cemetary in Indianapolis, Indiana for a soldier named Minas Goodall. His headstone indicates only he was a member of the U.S. Colored Infantry, PVT 14. His name is indicated, on the Crown Hill listing as a Confederate soldier who apparently fought on the side of the South for some period of time.(unknown how long) His date of death (the d. I presumes means death date) is listed as 28 September 1924. There are no dates on the headstone, just the name and unit.

Now my daughter is married to a Goodall and they are very interested in perhaps seeing if any more concise information might be found for this particular person. My daughter is going to the main library in Indianapolis to see if they have the city newspaper on microfilm, for that 1924 date, to see if this gentleman's obit was published. I have been searching the web and some library references, but have not been able to find any extensive information about the African-American units who fought on both sides. Mainly, we're trying to find lists of those particular companies, regiments, unit types and listings of names, IF ANYTHING LIKE THIS EXISTS.

If anyone who has extensive knowledge about the civil war POW camps, please let us know where more information might be found. Oh, yeah, we think this person may have been a POW at Camp Morton in Indianapolis, but survived. We know that 1616 Confederate soldiers died there, were buried in Greenlawn Cemetary, then reinturred in a special area in Crown Hill. Another thing we wonder is if his first name is actually MINAS. I cannot find a name like this in any English names web sites I've researched. We wondered if his name may have been spelled wrong or maybe it was a middle name.

Thanks for any information available.

I am the great great great grandson of John and I am trying to find out as much as possible about these three brothers, particularly what they did during the war but any information about their lives would be greatly appreciated. I know that John is buried in the Polk County Cemetery in Nebraska and George is buried in the Bush Cemetery in Owen County, Indiana. Thanks everyone for all your help and hopefully someone might know something! Have a great day!

Brett

Hi Sean! This post is rather old, but in case you haven't come across the info you were looking for, I thought I'd let you know that a while back the American Civil War Database made it's records available for free briefly, and I saved them as pdf's for
:
Andrew Hoover who served with the 79th
Isaac Hoover 130th
John W. Hoover 11th
Levi Hoover 75th
Samuel Hoover 130th
David Hoover Y. 34th
Elias Hoover 91st
Emsly Hoover 11th
Enos Hoover 11th
James M. Hoover 34th
Leason Hoover 130th
Silas A. Hoover 34th
and William W. Hoover 153rd.

In case you're interested, I also grabbed them for:
Aaron R. Sours 47th
Isaiah Sours 130th
Nelson A. Sours 44th Infantry
Abraham Sours 9th
Henry M. Sours 47th
Jacob G. Sours 13th
Josiah Sours 13th
Simon F. Sours 34th
Meredith Sours 153rd
Thomas L. Sours 6th Calvary
and Alfred Sours 130th

I have Peter Hosler with the 75th's also.

Incidently, Isaac Hoover was my 3rd great-grandfather, as was Peter Hosler. But I thought it safe to assume that the other Hoovers and Sours were relatives, so I have them, too. If you're still interested, let me know and I will email the pdf's to you.
-Chelle

Deserted in 1855, then enlisted in 1862?

Hey folks- I've been trying for some time to find out data about my Great-Great Grandfather, James (B.?) Snow. He married Anna Mary Reed in about 1870, had 2 children with her, then was gone by 1876, when Anna turned up in Michigan with her children (who were living as step-children of her new husband).

Family lore said he was in the Union Army, and I do have information that a James B. Snow enlisted in the Indiana Cavalry on 3 Mar 1862, and mustered out in 1865 in Indianapolis. He was the only James Snow who both served in Indiana regiments and actually survived the war from what I can find.

I've never been able to find much more about him, even when he was born, only that he was born in Indiana (according to his son Arthur and daughter Syrena's data which in multiple places cites his birthplace as Indiana). I estimated his birth year as about 1840 based on his military service and when his children were born.

Recently I've also found a list of Enlistments which indicates a James Snow enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1855 and deserted shortly thereafter- within a few months. This record places his date of birth in 1834 (something not on the other records I have) which is not way off my initial estimate of 1840.

My question is this: Would it have been within the bounds of reason to believe that a 20 year old man would enlist in th US Army in 1855, desert and then 7 years later, enlist in the Union Cavalry to go to the Civil War? I'm not familiar with military lore of this era much so I'm not sure if desertions were common or how the state regiments were connected to the US Army in that time.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

For context, here's James Snow:

http://trees.ancestry.com/pt/person.aspx?pid=-1480333217&amp...

Here is the Civil War enlistment record I believe to be his:

http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=hdssoldiers&am...

And here is the US Army Register of Enlistments showing that a James Snow enlisted and deserted in 1855:

http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?ti=0&indiv=tr...

He should have a pension record. You can request it from the National Archives using form NATF 85 (download the form or order the records)

http://www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/pr...
My ggf's pension files had lots of family information.

The Civil War Collection on Ancestry lists two Jesse Gunnings, one serving in IN and one in MO. This could be the same Jesse, enlisting in different locations at different times, or it could be two separate people. Might need a little more investigating to see which is yours. For instance, did he enlist with other members of his family, or hometown friends? I don't see Jesse in the 1890 Union veterans schedule. Since he entered the home in 1895, he should be listed in the 1890.
--------------
Name: Jesse Gunning
Side: Union
Regiment State/Origin: Indiana
Regiment Name: 11 Indiana Cavalry
Regiment Name Expanded: 11th Regiment, Indiana Cavalry
COMPANY: G
Rank In: Private
Rank In Expanded: Private
Rank Out: Private
Rank Out Expanded: Private
Film Number: M540 roll 29
----------------
Name: Jesse Gunning
Side: Union
Regiment State/Origin: Missouri
Regiment Name: 1 Missouri Cavalry
Regiment Name Expanded: 1st Regiment, Missouri Cavalry
COMPANY: K
Rank In: Private
Rank In Expanded: Private
Rank Out: Private
Rank Out Expanded: Private
Film Number: M390 roll 18

I don't know if they used divisions then. If you go to
http://www.civilwar.nps.gov/cwss/soldiers.cfm
you can type in Samuel Barrick's name, and list Indiana as the state, and see he was in the 63rd Regiment. If you click on the 63rd Regiment, it pulls up a history of everything the regiment did.

Have you ordered his pension files? There should be some clue as to where he's buried. Ancestry's Civil War Pension Index shows that he applied for an invalid pension, and Sarah for a widow's pension. The copy of the card is so poor that it can't be read, but you should be able to order the file without it.

Some discrepancy on dates, since Ancestry's "American Civil War Soldiers" database has him enlisting on 14 Nov. 1862, and discharged the following year:

Name: Isaac Beezley
Enlistment Date: 14 Nov 1862
Side Served: Union
State Served: Indiana
Service Record: Enlisted as a Private on 14 November 1862.
Drafted into Company M, 1st Cavalry Regiment Indiana on 14 Nov 1862.
Mustered Out Company M, 1st Cavalry Regiment Indiana on 1 Aug 1863.
--------
You might find some answers in his pension files. See attached image.
--------
(FYI, Ancestry's "US General Land Office Records 1769-1907" database shows an Isaac Beezley with two land patents, dated 20 Aug 1838, both in Kosciusko County, IN.)
John married Rebecca Clevenger and they had a son George W. Bryant. They had moved from KY to MO and then to IL and then back to MO. Maybe your George W. from KY is brother to John Bryant from KY. Both go to Iniana and John named his son Geo. W. We just learned that John b. 1823 had father named Howell Bryant who had about 15 kids.Jackie

Hi,
I've found a record on Ancestry of a John Antrup who enlisted with the 35th Infantry Regiment, Company H on 27 Sep 1864. It doesn't have any further information (birth date, birthplace, etc...) Is there any way to get more info to try and see if this the correct John? Mine was born about 1822 in Prussia. Thanks,

Trent

We are descendants of Angeline (daughter of Henry and Eliza)
Letters to Eliza from Henry mention her brothers farm in Cartersburg, Indiana. That town was in Liberty Township, Handricks County, Indiana, and a census for 1850 discloses a Selch family residing in the area as farmers. From what I understand, her brothers name was Peter, married to Mary. That could be incorrect. good luck

John Henricks (Hendricks) - Shelby County: Did he die in the Civil War?

My ancestor, John Henricks (Hendricks) was living in Shelby County in 1860. He is listed with his wife Sarah and children in the 1860 Shelby County census. In 1870, John is no longer listed and Sarah is a widow. I have not been able to find any cemetery information or obituary for John in Shelby County so I believe he died elsewhere.

I have found a Civil War record online for a John T. Henricks, 40th Regiment, Company F. I don't know if this is my ancestor but would like to know more.

If anyone can help me - by ruling out his death in the war, or proving that he did die in the war, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks for any help or suggestions.

Judith
jw62002@yahoo.com

Hello, One of my direct ancestors was Isaac P. Beezley who served in Company L, Indiana First Cavalry Regiment during the Civil War. Family information indicated he died at his family farm in Kosciusko County, Tippecanoe Township on November 18, 1862. I have no other information available about his service, date of muster, whether he fell ill and returned home or if he might have been wounded in battle and succumbed to infection after he came home. He was 49 years old at the time of his death. If you know of any pictures, articles, or other documents relating to his service, I would be greatly appreciative. Thank you for your help. Sincerely, Todd Beezley, Roanoke, VA

Sorry if this is the wrong place to put it, but I couldn't find where to ask this question.

I have an ancestor who was apparently in the Civil war. He died in Indiana (after the war) So I am assuming that he was probably part of an Indiana regiment. I did a search here on Ancestry.com for him and it only came up with two men with the same name that where veterans of the War, one from Alabama regiment (I doubt this is him) the other however is from a Indiana regiment! Sadly the record does not provide any vital information, so my question is how do I tell this is the record I am looking for?

Also although there is a listing for headstone (and his brother's). I can not find them in any cemetery. Suggestions?
