I have posted a lengthy obituary of COL Marshall J Smith on the Smith family message board.
COL Smith was an organizer of the 24th Louisiana Volunteers, known as the Crescent Regiment, and participated in the Battle of Shiloh. He later was in the artillery and served at Port Hudson, after which he was taken prisoner. After a year as a prisoner, he was exchanged and served in Richmond until the end of the war.
