My Great grandfather, Caswell Meek(s),was in the Caddo Militia in 1863 .I have been unable to find anything about this group. He is in the National Archives Records -just his name and that he was reported missing . Also his son Pleasant Meek was discharge from this Militia group. There must be some record of what happened to them. I haven't been able to find it and I have looked for 10 yrs. Any information will be greatly appreciated.

I have posted a lengthy obituary of COL Marshall J Smith on the Smith family message board.
COL Smith was an organizer of the 24th Louisiana Volunteers, known as the Crescent Regiment, and participated in the Battle of Shiloh. He later was in the artillery and served at Port Hudson, after which he was taken prisoner. After a year as a prisoner, he was exchanged and served in Richmond until the end of the war.

Death notice of Tiger Regiment veteran, Sun., 6/9/1907, Washington, DC

Death notice from a Washington, DC newspaper published on Sunday, 6/9/1907:

"Veteran's Body Unclaimed"
"Remains of 'Louisiana Tiger,' who inhaled gas, still at Morgue"

The body of Arthur Ludewitzhe, a Confederate veteran, lies at the morgue, still unclaimed. Ludewitzhe died Wednesday from the effects of inhaling illuminating gas in his room at the Carolina Hotel, 472 Pennsylvania avenue northwest.

The man, who was a member of the famous Louisiana Tiger Regiment during the war, had business cards in his possession bearing his name and address, 9 St. Peter St., New Orleans. He was a chiropodist.

The local authorities communicated with the police of New Orleans, but they replied that no such man was known there, and that there was no such address as the one given. It was said at the time of his death that the man had relatives in Baltimore, but as no names or addresses were given, it has been impossible to find out whether this is true.

Unless the body is claimed by tomorrow, arrangements will be made for the funeral, which will probably be taken charge of by the Confederate organizations of the city. If not, the money found in the dead man's possession will be sufficient to defray the expenses of burial, and save the body from the potter's field.
He enlisted at New Orleans, so I am guessing it would be located close by. Also looking for others researching BOYETTS that migrated from Georgia to Louisiana. This is a partial listing of names from two BOYET families who were in Georgia until about 1851 to 1853. LOVITT, TERRELL, NOEL, GEORGE, JANE, MARY, WILLIAM, ANN, LAURA, JOHN B., ELIZA, JOHN, WESTLEY, MARTHA, JAMES BOYET, and NANCY BOWLS.

According to lore and some sketchy pension documentation,
my great-uncle George Henry Gottfried Ottmers was confined after the battle of Maxville , in New Orleans, in a facility known as
Pecan Cotton Press. Could this possibly have been a cotton gin ON Pecan Street or Avenue ? I have been able to find NOTHING about this place and am hoping it was simply a business of the time, and beyond my wildest dreams that there might be some documentation of it. Upon his furlough in a prisoner exchange,he was sent on his way with only the clothes on his back and walked from New Orleans, LA to Fredericksburg,Texas, where his family thought the dead had risen since they had not heard from him in about two years.
He was captured Penecost Sunday,1864 and held for three months. He had served 3 1/2 years with Stucken's Co E Buechel's First Regiment Texas Calvary.
Many Thanks for ANY information,
DL Sagebiel

I have a fellow named Albert Major who served in the Louisiana 15th Regiment, Co C, as a Private. He was captured in Gettysburg and imprisoned at Fort Delaware. He took "the oath" in Jul 1863. By "the oath" I'm thinking he became a Galvanized Tar or Yankee. Can anyone out there help me further? I know that Albert Major was b. 1838 in Louisiana and possibly added on the name of Nobles in 1880. He was a Boatman in 1870 Escambia, Florida and later became a River Pilot. I have checked for lists of Galvanized Tars and Yankees and can only find an incomplete one, without Albert Major of course. I would appreciate any help at all.

I am reading a Civil War diary written by a Union soldier who was among the first occupation troops to come up the Red River after the Trans-Mississippi Department surrendered. He was stationed at Grand Ecore and noted that the bulk of his regiment was camped at "Liberty Springs" some two miles away. While the regimental colonel was located in the City of Natchitoches, "Liberty Springs" was apparently outside of town. Anyone have any information the location of this camp ground?

The soldier and a party of his friends also crossed the Red River at Grand Ecore and proceeded some 20 miles northeast to "Red Shute hunting ground" to hunt bear and deer in October of 1865. Any idea where Red Shute was/is?

Hugh Simmons

I am searching for the death record for W.Mayo Gray(names from family Bible)who allegedly moved from SC to Bayou Sara in 1859 with his family, among them my greatgrandfather Joseph Edwards Gray. Bayou Sara was in Pointe Coupe Parish and they lived on a sugar cane plantation, having a few slaves. Mayo was born in 1800, but is last known to have been living with son, Joseph, in E. Feliciana parish in 1870 fed. census. I have reason to believe Joseph married Margaret Alexander, the daughter of Alonzo A. Alexander and Mary Vale(family Bible) but would like to know other info.

The muster roll for Miles Legion says he appears until December 31, 1861. The 1911 Census, Enumeration o Ex-Confederate Soldiers & Widows of Deceased Soldiers, Parish of Orleans, LA has him wounded at the Battle of Murfreeboro. His orbituary in the Daily Picayune has him wounded in the Battle of Gettsburg. I would like to find out what happened to him after December 31, 1861.

I don't have much info at all on my family. My father was David John Dauzat, born 30 Oct 1941 or 42, to Ettienne and Virginia Dauzat of Pineville, Rapides Parish. This is all I have.
I am searching for the first name of the Judge Perkins who owned a plantation ("Somerset") in Tensas Parish, LA, in the 1860s. This plantation was on Gen. U.S. Grant's route down the Louisiana shore of the Mississippi River before his army crossed to the Mississippi side of the river in April-May 1863. Civil War accounts often refer to "Perkins' Plantation" and "Perkins' Landing," but no one provides the judge's first name.

Friends of the Resaca Confederate Cemetery Assoc. forming

Is a new group starting up to continue the care and maintain the Resaca Confederate Cemetery.

The State of Georgia has cut back on its caretaking and maintenance of the Confederate Cemetery. The State does not own this cemetery, But has been its caretakers for all of these years. Now it's are turn to take over were the state does not seem to want to go. It has been said that it is not P C to care for them(ie Confederate Cemeteries) in this day and age, But now it i up to us as sons and daughters of these soldiers to care for are Ancestors buried in the cemetery.

Membership is open to all, weither you have an ancestor buried at Resaca, Ga. or just want to help with the upkeep of the Cemetery. There will be a period to see how many members we can get to join and then we will open it up to a vote and election of officers, Dues wil have to be agree upon at the out set of membership as well. Note Dues will go to the upkeep and maintenance of the Cemetery. Only a small portion to go to paperwork and flyers. very small.

contact William T.
Henry Whittington, son of Burrel Whittington, was born about 1812 in Georgia. His wife was Annie Bounds, on of Solomon Bounds of Pass Christian, Mississippi. He was a Confederate soldier in the Civil War, and killed in 1865. He was living in Louisiana at the outbreak of the war and it is assumed that he joined a Louisiana unit, but it is not known for sure. Whittington is my wife's g-g-grandfather. We are trying to discover the circumstances surrounding his death and where he is buried. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

He fought on the side of the Union and was in Company H. I wrote to the National Archives but all they sent me was something that resembles pay records for the period October 1863 thru November 1864. The records show he was born in Hancock County Virginia and went into the military in Mississippi. Are there any pictures of this company? If so where can I get copies?

One of my family members, Hugh Simmons, Co. B, 31st LA Infantry (1842-1862), mustered Monroe, LA, March 19, 1862, supposed to have died within six months of enlisting (Sept 1, 1862). Family says the hospital was a place called Toulksville, but I can't find anything about it. It may be garbled spelling from an old handwritten document, or the hospital could have been a temporary tent encampment with no lasting record. But I'm trying to find out where Hugh would have been buried. He was not sent home.

My great-great grandfather, Thomas H. Hall, who lived in the Morganza / St. Francisville area prior to the Civil War, was a gunsmith/ armorer. I cannot find him in any Confederate (or Union, for that matter) military unit, but feel he was most likely engaged in some sort of war activity, since he was 25 years old in 1861. Does anyone have any information concerning Louisiana armories or armorers, etc., during the Civil War. He died in Baton Rouge in 1910, but a search of both Confederate and Union pension applications have proven negative. Help me if you can!

Booth's Index lookup?

While in exile from my native Louisiana, I have no convenient way to consult Booth's Index since I do not own a copy. If someone with a copy of it could look up these names for me, I would appreciate it very much:

D. R. Shearer - in April 1862 the New Orleans "Daily Picayune" reported that he was a casualty of the Battle of Shiloh, but gave his command as Co. C, 17th Louisiana Infantry Regiment. However, no man by this name is found in the records of this company.

Thomas D. Jones - he was from Union Parish and died in the war. I'd like to check both T. D. Jones and Thomas D. Jones.

Thanks for any help,

T. D. Hudson

Caddo Confederates-Co I,27th LA In

I would like to collect information about the Caddo Confederates. I have very little to start with, but I have learned that the 27th Louisiana Infantry fought very bravely at Vicksburg under General Shoup until they were surrendered. I understand that they were paroled and some of them were later re-organized.

I would love to hear any and all stories of the 27th in general, but am most interested in learning more about Co.I which was the Caddo Confederates, volunteers from Caddo Parish, of which some of my ancestors were a part.

I have compiled a list of names of 176 soldiers specific to Co. I, 27th LA Infantry. This list came from the books written by Andrew Booth. I will be happy to send it to anyone who is interested if you will email me directly.

Any help with my project would be most appreciated. Thanks, Diana

I visited a small cemetary in Virginia on Memorial Day weekend, and was surprised to fine the final resting place of Captain V. S. Goodin, located in the Olive Branch Methodist Church cemetary in Austinville, VA. Finding a Louisiana grave this far "off the beaten track" was a surprise, to say the least.
I have written one Civil War Book. The 24th Virginia Cavalry. Hopefully, and Goodin family members who are interested might find this, or you can take it upon yourself to forward the information....

Looking for information on Henderson's Scouts, a cavalry unit under General Nathan Bedford Forrest. Thomas Henderson was the Captain of this company and his brother Samuel Henderson was the 1st Lieutenant. They supposedly came from Louisiana, but I have not been able to prove that. They were probably born in the late 1830's or early 1840's. Any help greatly appreciated - Thanks Don

My GGGGrandfather (John G. Allen) and his brother (Rufus H. Allen) enlisted to fight in "the war of northern aggression" in April 1862. I have the CMSR's and Pension records on the both them. Unfortunately, their records are quite thin and contain only the enlistment papers and a couple of muster roll cards.

Information on this regiment is also quite thin. I'm trying to piece together their experience, regiments they may been a part of, and engagements they may have been involved with.

A note appears on the bottom of a copy of the enrollment list. It refers to the history of this company and reads, "This company appears to have served as Captain Fuller's Company, Lousiana Cavalry; Company B, Wimberly's (afterwards Webb's) Squadron Lousiana Cavalry; Company G, 18th (Balch's) Battalion Tennessee Cavalry; Captain Harrison's Company, 2d (Woodward's) Regiment Kentucky Cavalry; and Company C, 6th Regiment Louisana Cavalry. The regiment was first organized in the Trans-Mississippi Department during the winter of 1863-64, as Harrison's Battalion, Louisiana Cavalry. It was later increased to a regiment by the addition of unattached companies and designated the 6th Regiment Louisiana Cavalry."

To the Civil War experts on the list, is this an accurate progression of the history of this regiment? Any pointers to what engagements this regiment participated in?

Best regards and wishes for a productive and informative New Year.

-Cary Allen
allensofmarietta@earthlink.net
Could someone please tell me in what county would Perkins Landing fall in. I have a a certificate of a William W. Clark that died as follows....

The disease was contracted while on the White River Expedition during the month of January 1863. When the Regiment returned to its camp at Helena the said William W. Clark was sent to General Hospital at Memphis Tennessee. He returned to the regiment at Millikins Bend, Louisianna being yet unfit for duty and marched with his regiment to Perkins Landing, Louisianna and being unable to go farther was left at that point where he died. Cause of death Diarrhea (most likely dysentary).

I would like to see if there might be any remote chance of finding a location of death and possible burial.

Thank you all Civil War buffs!
