I have a copy of a service record for someone who was in the 12th Regiment, Company H. It indicates he was confined to Hart's Island. He was released, and given an Honorable Discharge and pension.
This confuses me. Were Union soldiers confined there as well? Nothing in my leads me to believe this is the case. If he (and apparently 20 others of the same regiment) did something of a criminal nature that would have them confined by their own side, why would they be released with an Honorable Discharge?
Anyone have any info that can help me? Anyone know of a roster of prosoners held at Hart's Island?
