Thank you for your reply to my query. I had read that all the Civil War records from that area were burned in a fire during the Valley Campaign of 1864.
I tend to agree with you that John L Smith may have been a captain in the local militia. I also was thinking that maybe Capt John might just have been a nickname. He would only have been about 20 in 1864.
It was much easier finding Civil War information on my mother's people in Pennsylvania, they have excellent records on ARIAS.
