The 26th Bn was organized 05/20/1862 from those members of the 59th Regt who escaped capture at Roanoke Island, NC, 02/08/1862, together with some recruits
Raised for the purpose of forming part of that regt when captured members had been exchanged, but the co's were detached to form a separate Bn, per S.O. #244, A&IGO, 10/18/1862

Company divided 06/12/1863 & formed Co H, 26th Bn

Co F = Red Sulpher Yankee Hunters, Monroe County [now W Va]; formerly Co A; formerly Co C [1st] 59th Regt
Reorganized 04/29/1862

Co H = Capt James Dunlap's Co; Organized 06/12/1863; from transfers from various companies of the Bn
