Help With James Baltimore Fluvanna Artillery

I've got an interesting situation and I'm hoping someone can offer some advice or information.

I've been doing some research on a relative, James Baltimore of Fluvanna County Va. There is a listing on the roster of the Fluvanna Artillery for James Baltimore. That's where things get interesting. The Virginia Regimental Series book for this unit lists him as being captured at Winchester 3/65 and is later paroled at the end of the war. I have also located the Pension Records for James Baltimore that support this. However, there is a mention in the Bulletin of the Fluvanna County Historical Society #41 & 42, that James Baltimore died April 1864 at Orange Courthouse. This info is an extract from letters written by members of the Fluvanna Artillery. This death is also reported in the Fluvanna County Death Index, however with the name spelled Ballimore.

What really throws me off is it seems there really were two different James Baltimore's from Fluvanna County that were about the same age. The James Baltimore who survived the was the son of James and Sally... his marriage info lists them as his parents, and the James that died April 1864 @ Orange CH was the son of Richard and Martha... the notice of death on the Fluvanna Death Index was given by James Baltimore's father Richard.

Is there any way to determine if both James Baltimore's served in the Fluvanna Artillery? I have been unable to locate any other James Baltimore in any units other than units that were later combined to form the Second Battalion Fluvanna Artillery or the Fluvanna Artillery itself.

I found this in a book I purchased. Though someone might like this info.

Philadelphia PA 1886

Lida Rivel, aged 15 months who died several days ago at her home # 611 Snyder Avenue, the coroner's jury today gave a verdict of death from congestion of the brain. The mother had the habit of giving the child what was known as Mothers Comfort a patent medicine and a physician of the old school who was called in gave the cause of death as gastritis but the family physician a homoeopathist who was calld in afterwards said the death was the result of congestion of the brain due to opium poison in the Mothers comfort. The autopsy by Dr. Cormad showed the latter to be right and a verdict to that effect was accordingly giving by the jury.

John L Smith 1844-1928. Researching my gr gr gr grandfather. He was from Rockingham County Virginia he is buried in Singers Glen Cemetery with his wife Permelia. Several of his childrens tombstones say son or daughter of Capt John Smith so I assume he fought in the Civil War. Can anyone tell me how to get information on soldiers from Rockingham County, Va? How do I find out what companies were made up of soldiers from that area?

UCV units in Va., Ashland Grays

I am hoping to find info on the United Confederate Veterans organization for the State of Virginia, County of Hanover.

I have been researching a Confederate Vet. by the name of Henry Jackson Clay Vass. He served in the Ashland Grays, Company E, 15th Virginia Infantry. He died around 1893, in Elmont, Va.

One of my hopes is to find a reunion photo of the Ashland Grays or an obit of HJCV that may have been printed in the UCV magazine. I see that the Va. Hist. Soc. has a number of these magazines in its collection and I plan to go next week and search the index.

One of the mysteries that I am trying to solve concerning HJCV is were he is buried. His wife Mollie Vass is buried at Winn's Baptist Church in Elmont, Va. but the church has no record of her husband's burial there. There is a space at the foot of Mollie's grave that has no stone, and it is large enough for HCJV to be buried there. We have probed the section and no conclusive evidence of a grave being there was found.

ANY ideas would be most welcome! Thank you in advance

Sandy

Hello all. I am trying to find someone who lives close to the University of Virginia who is willing to go to the Special Collections section and scan some copies for me. My Great Great Grandfather died in the General Hospital at Charlottesville, VA during the war in 1863 and is buried in an unmarked grave there. We know the location and we are interested in getting it marked and would like to have the documentation handy. I have the information from the documentation but I do not have actual verifiable copies. I do not have the time to get up there, and the University Department is not able to do these kind of requests. Can anyone help? I am willing to pay for scans and reasonable mileage plus shipping.

Sincerely...Thank you.

looking for information re: confederate soldier George W Crawford

I have recently returned from Lexington, Virginia. One of the things we did was to tour the Stonewall Jackson Cemetery. As we were walking through the cemetery, I noticed a "Crawford" headstone. This is a name I am researching. The older tombstone was that of a confederate soldier. I took a photograph and then we carried on our way. Once I returned home, I downloaded the photo into the computer and with the full screen view was able to see that the soldier was a George W Crawford. This name runs through my Crawford ancestors and in fact is the name of one of my uncles. I spoke with that uncle in Scotland on the weekend and he confirmed for me that we did have a "confederate soldier" in our ancestry but that he was not sure where "in America" the soldier lived. A trip back to Lexington is out of the question. I wonder how I would go about getting more information on George W Crawford, buried in the Stonewall Jackson cemetery. The headstone reads: George W Crawford Btry A 10 VA ARTY C.S.A"
Any help greatly appreciated
Christine
Obediah Daniel Atkins enlisted 6-8-1861 In Danville, Va. Capt. Joseph R. Cabell was leader. In a book, Pittsylvania Co. Board of Exemptions, I found an entry stating Obediah was employed as a sustitute for William G. Walker in Capt. Cabel Flourney's Calvary Co. in 1865. I would like to learn more about the 38th and about Obediah being a substitute for Walker. John Rock Dix, Jr. and his brother, William John Dix, were also enlistments with the 38th. Obediah and John Rock were my ggrandfathers. Thanks for any information. Margie Stroud

Wyatt Thomas "Tom" Redmond and his brother William Redmond joined the 56th Virginia Volunteer Infantry, Company G, in Charlotte County, Virginia. This unit was known as the "Charlotte Defenders". These brothers were from Mississippi and were in their late teens/early 20's at the time. Tom returned to Mississippi, but William died from Typhoid Fever while still in Virginia and was buried there. Looking for more info on the Charlotte Defenders (i.e., battles fought, etc.) and the burial place of William - possibly near a hospital.

Wesley Case was a member of 3rd regiment of the Pennsylvania Artillary. He was discharged from Fort Monroe and at the bottom of the papers it mentions a hospital and a Surgeon (hard to read). Does anyone know anything about this? What hospital is most likely? Are there hospital records on injuries etc.
I have attached a copy of the discharge papers.

Hello,

My Great Great Great Grandpa Peyton Justice was hung by Union Scouts in 1863 Pike County, Kentucky. They ask him "Where are your sons, and Where are your horses?" He had sons of age for military service, but so far I've been unable to locate them in any Union/Confederate units. Their names are as follows:
Hutson Justice
Jefferson Justice
William Justice
Fleming Justice
Greenville "Green" Justice (Great Great Grandpa)
James Epperson Justice
Peyton Albert Justice
Greenville's sons:
Harry Peyton Justice
Mitchell Justice
Colbert Justice
Peyton's wife Mary Polly Blackburn indited several men for the hanging of her husband, but it is said they never stood trial.
1850 Letter from Thomas S. Bocock, transcription & images online

I have a letter from Thomas S. Bocock dated 25 Jul 1850. From what I can gather through brief online research, I believe he was a member of the House of Representatives from Virginia around 1850 & later became Speaker of the House of Representatives sometime around the Civil War.

I don't know who the letter was sent to, but my great aunt Virginia Butler Priddy gave it to my father many years ago (if I remember correctly, sometime in the 1970s).

The letter is interesting, aside from it's age & the obvious education & intelligence of the writer, because it discusses several of the issues that led to the Civil War.

If anyone would like to read it, it can be found on my genealogy website at:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sassytazzy/family/m...

Susan :)
Sassytazzy's Online Genealogy Research Library
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sassytazzy/index.ht...
