I am looking for information on Francis/ Francys Goff who was in Co. I 15th WV Infantry. I have him dying in 1862 and being buried in Tyler Co. VA. I'm guessing he might have died in camp before actually being in a battle. His wife was Elizabeth and she did receive his pension. In the 1860 Census, he, Elizabeth, and his son, Joseph were located in Harrison Co. VA. I am trying to find who his parents are. I'm hoping if I can determine where he joined up it might point me in his family's location.

Thanks,
Lucy Goff

Carlin's Wheeling Battery, 1st WV Arty, Co. D

For the past year I have been researching William Anshutz, the Civil War soldier who died in Andersonville. Although he lived in Pittsburgh, he was with a West Virginia regiment (actually a couple of them), but the one he was in last was Carlin's 1st West Virginia Artillery, Battery D (the Wheeling Battery). I was able to prove my relationship to William and claim his unclaimed veteran's medal from the West Virginia Division of Culture & History. Photos of the medal are here:

http://www.48ovvi.org/medal/

It's quite a treasure to me as I am a big Civil War buff and this is the closest thing I have to an actual Civil War ancestor!

Anyone with ancestors in Carlin's Battery might want to purchase the book on his unit. It's really great and I can recommend it highly:

http://www.lindapages.com/1wvla/1wvla.htm

Don Worth
Valencia, CA

He was reported to have been killed at Ceredo in Wayne County, but there may have been records in Cabell County as well. He was married to Mary Anna Vanhoose, a family which has roots in the Kentucky, WVA, and Ohio border region. He may have been living under the alias of Jack Meadows to hide his work as a scout in the Union Army. Besides the circumstances of his death I'd like to know the location of his grave.

I need help from anyone that has books or records who is willing to do a lookup for me. My relative that was supposed to have served in the Civil War was Richard WITHROW, aka Martin V. Withrow, aka Van B. Withrow, aka Richard MV Withrow. His wife filed for a pension after his death. No record of Richard was ever found by the pension office. I am beginning to wonder if his name is misspelled somewhere in the records, or if he was in some sort of secret company or something. His wife wrote the pension comissioner a letter saying that her husband was too proud to ask for a pension while he was alive, however soon after his death she filed for the pension. She said he was in the 1st WV infantry, co. B. No record was found. Several years later she applies again saying that he served in a NY regiment. Odd, they were from WV. His brothers Frances Marion and John Newman both served in the 7th WV calvary, I believe. Odd, but no mention of Richard, I would have thought he would be in the same co. If anyone can help, or has ideas please let me know.

One of my husband's ancestors, Javan Bowden, was born in Union, Monroe County, (West) Virginia, but traveled to Edgar County, Illinois and joined the 12 IL US INF in 1861. Paris, in Edgar County, has turned up fairly often in my West Virginia searches and I wondered if anyone can tell me why it was a frequent destination for West Virginians? Also, how common was it for someone from Monroe County to join the Union army? Thanks for any information.

I have the muster roll cards for my ancestor along with the fact that he was taken prisoner in Fayetteville. There is no information of what happened to him after he was taken prisoner. No death date, where he was buried, prison camp that he might have been taken to, etc. I would like to find out when he died, where he might be buried, or what prison camp he may have been taken to or any other information.
My ancestors name is William Mann, 36th VA Infantry, Confederate, POW 5-15-1863 in Fayetteville, WV.
His family was from Boone County, WV. His mother was Melvina Kaylor Mann Lewis, his step-father was James Lewis. He had many step siblings, one sister Mary Elizabeth Mann Harless (James Harless) and one brother, Charles Mann, who served in the same infantry. His wife was Elizabeth McGuire Mann. He had one son Oliver David Mann b. 1863.
If anyone can help me with this or any of this family, I would appreciate it. You can email me at Peglet731@aol.com.

I have recently published a Civil War diary that I edited called "Four Years Along the Tilhance-The Private Diary of Elisha Manor." It is a diary that begins on July 1, 1861 and ends on May 17, 1865. Manor was a young man who helped his father run a farm and gristmill in Johnsontown-about 4 miles west of Hedgesville. His two brothers served in Co. E 2nd Va. Inf.in the Stonewall Brigade. Lots of info on local Civil War action-especially along the B&O Railroad. Also much information on local families and churches. The 142 pg paperback includes pictures, maps, notes, and separate appendices on churches, towns and villages, and other locations. Cost of the book is $15 plus $2.50 S&H Send Check or money order to Steve French 8604 Martinsburg Rd. Hedgesville, W.Va. 25427

Does anyone know about this unit, specifically Company A of the 2nd Ohio Cavalry? I am trying to track down a Madison Meadows who was living in Surry County, NC, in 1890 when he applied for a pension based on service in this unit. According to census records he was born in WV - I am trying to find out where. I have reviewed online records and cannot find him listed in this unit, or any other. Does anyone know what WV/VA counties may have contributed men to this unit?
(I have sent for the pension records for this Madison Meadows but you know how long it takes to get these from the National Archives!!!)

Hello, I'm looking for any information on the Reg. of Home Guards of New Martinville, WV. My great Grandfather was in this unit around the time of Morgan's Raid. I am curious about what side of the war they were on. I think that this Reg. might have gone to Kentucky because that is where he met his wife and got married. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Linnea Hyder

A History of Shady Spring District (Raleigh County, WV), compiled by the Woman’s Club in 1979, has a newspaper column (Bug Dust, a regular feature in a Beckley (WV) paper) on Page 175 that contains information about a Civil War company. The column is “Flat Top Civil War Activities Reviewed” by Cordie Cole Nugen. The company discussed is:

Company F, 151st Virginia militia, also known as Foley’s Fighters and Foley’s Copperheads for their leader, Capt. Richard B. Foley, who lived near Camp Creek and began organizing the company in July 1861. The article states that the records of the Confederacy at Richmond, Va., has this company being officially organized in Mercer County on Aug. 22, 1861.
Does anyone have information on the Battle of Gauley Mountain in West Virginia? Here are my notes:

George Washington Smith Sr. of Abraham, Raleigh County, W.Va., was born on Dec. 12, 1826 and died in Jan. 19, 1862. He was a son of Jacob Smith and his second wife Jane Kincaid.

It is believed that George Sr. served in the Confederate cavalry and died in the Civil War during the Battle of Gauley Mountain. The tombstone with this inscription was put in place by Charlie Jones and Todd Denny, according to one of George’s granddaughters. George Sr. is buried in New Salem Missionary Baptist Church cemetery in Abraham.

Researchers have not found an official record of George Sr.’s service during the Civil War. One problem is there are several George Washington Smiths who served in the area at that time. Another barrier is that “no official tabulation” was made of Raleigh Countians who died in the war, according to a 1950 Beckley Post-Herald article quoting historian Judge W.A. Riffe.

David Smith said the information on George’s death in the war came from a grandson, Charles D. Jones, son of General Marion Smith. Charles is probably the Charlie Jones previously mentioned. Charles, who grew up in Abraham, asked his Uncle George Jr. how his father died and was told George Sr. was killed in the Civil War.
GG Grandfather, William Goddard, Fought During Civil War. From Greenbrier/Fayette County.

I was trying to figure out what side my great great grandfather was on and what company he fought in. His name was William Goddard. He was born 1833. He passed away in 1908. His family moved to Sewell Mountain, Fayette County around 1840.
In 1860, William married Matilda Catherine Lemmons. They were married in Greenbrier County. They had their first child in 1862. Their second child was born in 1865. So, he could have fought in '61 or between '62 and 1864, I have no idea. I have a land deed from 1870, in which William got land on Mt. Olive, Fayette County. He remained there until his death. I am a descendant of his eighth child, America Francis Goddard Foster. Also, I have a picture of him in his "uniform" and holding his gun.
If you have any info, please email me at Kacihelene@aol.com
Thank you,
Kaci Helene Foster Veazey

According to the service records, the company designation was originally Co.H and became Co. D.

There was an encampment of Sherman's raiders here Mar 8&9, 1865. Thought his family might want to know where he is.

His name was Asbury [Asberry] Phillips, I think he was born Greene Co, PA. ca 1819. I have found several Brock ancestors in the Civil War, but would like to search further for others: Underwood; Dulaney; Morgan; Ice; Lyons; Cumberledge and Stiles...all family ancestors. Thank you very much. Doris

Hi. Just found the location of the grave of my husband's great great grandfather, William Frank Ross, who fought in the 2nd WV Cavalry, in a cemetery in Harrison county, WV. However, there is no headstone. I seem to remember reading somewhere that the government has to provide a headstone for all civil war veterans. Can anyone point me in the right direction to start this process? Thank you.

Civil War tombstone - 8th WVa Cav Co. F???

I have a photo of a Civil War Veteran tombstone for "George Edwards, Co. F 8th W.Va. Cav." The tombstone is located in Union District of Mason Co., and I'm trying to find out about this George Edwards. In searching through the Civil War sites online, I see absolutely no reference to an "8th W.Va. Cavalry", let alone a company F. There IS a George Edwards in Co. D of the 7th W.Va. Infantry, which was manned by a number of men from the same area, and I wonder if it's possible that there was such a gross error in the information given for the tombstone. Perhaps that's just stretching the imagination too far... Of course, just looking up info on "George Edwards" is almost as tough as looking up "John Smith" - there must be hundreds of fellows with that name!
Anyone with some Civil War knowledge for the area have any clues for me regarding military unit?

By this time next year (Aug.2004)I hope to have my new book out on the 17th Virginia Cavalry. Anyone wishing to donate any biographical info on relatives who served in this regiment are asked to contact me at kesterson@wirefire.com
I am looking for photographs of the old vets. So, if you have any or know of any I would be happy to add them to the book. I have spent the better part of twenty years trying to folow the unit from formation in Jan. 1863 to the last days at Apponattox.
Unlike the books by Dawson and Harris this book devotes a great deal to first hand accounts. If you are looking for a specific relative in the regiment I would be glad to give you what I have. In some cases I have fairly good documentation on some of the men. In other cases I have next to nothing. So, don't be discouraged if I can't help out. Keep on searching no matter how long it takes.
Thank you,
Brian S. Kesterson
