how to find a civil war record

I have not worked at all with finding a person who served in the civil war and would appreciate some suggestions.
The person I am looking for is named John Johnson, was Norwegian born, lived (I believe) in Barron County - though perhaps it could have been Chippewa County (he did end up in Barron County and is buried there). His year of immigration was 1861. I believe he was born in 1847, died in 1905. His parents (again I am not totally certain) was Christen and Anne Johnson. I guess because of such a common name, I feel like I am looking for a needle in a haystack. So I need help on how to proceed.
I do know he was in the civil war, but that is about all I know.
Thanks
