According to Catherine Sager (p.68) Sales and Bewly didn't die until 2 weeks after Dr Whitman was killed. The two of them were almost over their bout with the measles. At one point they were in the kitchen and were told they would work for the Cayuse and take Cayuse wives. Apparently Sales swore at them and taunted them with what would happen when the troops arrived. Apparently the Cayuse felt that at this point they had little to lose. Shortly thereafter, two weeks after the Whitmans were killed they were dragged from their beds and beaten to death. Most of the other captives were traumatized. One gave his daughter as a bride and offered other girls although he had no others. Bewley and Sales were feisty! Page 101 of Thompson, Shallow Grave at Waiilatpu tells basically the same story.
