I have posted a lengthy obituary of COL Smith on the Smith family message board which details his military career and service as a colonel in the CSA during the War between the States.
He was an organizer of the 24th Louisiana Volunteers, known as the Crescent Regiment and participated in the battle of Shiloh. He later served in the artillery and was in the battle of Port Hudson, where he was taken prisoner. After being exchanged a year later, he served in Richmond until the end of the war.
