ZANESVILLE - Sarah Rosalie Kappes Haehnlen, 86, formerly of Zanesville, died peacefully Monday, Jan. 28, 2008, at her home in Cary, N.C.
Rosalie was born March 26, 1921, in Zanesville, a daughter of the late Edith Rose Greiner Smock and John Leonard Smock.
She attended Muskingum College, where she studied art, music and became an accomplished pianist. She joined the United States Marine Corps in 1945 during World War II, attained the rank of sergeant, was stationed in Camp Pendleton, Calif. and was proud to be included in what was to be recognized as one of the first women Marine Corps units. After the war she resumed her education, graduating from Ohio University.
In 1946 Rosalie married the late Walter Burton Kappes Jr. of Zanesville. She taught second grade at Westview Elementary School until her retirement.
She loved Ohio State football, British humor and politics, and was an astute bridge player. Her grandchildren called her "Soggy" or "Serge" and she was "celebrity" in the eyes of her family. A devoted mother and loyal friend, Rosalie's enduring wit and reassuring presence will be missed by all those who love her.
She is survived by her brothers, Cliff (Joanne) Smock of Huntsville Ala. and Wayne (Nancy) Smock of Westerville; daughter, Stephanie Ware of Cary, N.C. and her children, Lauren, Blake and Drew; her daughter, Deborah (Jim) Kappes Millis of the Outer Banks of N.C. and their children, Jonathan(Kelly), Debbie Hupe and Dak Millis; and a son, John (Yvonne) Bradley Kappes of Pickerington, and their sons, Josh and Christopher.
