USS Cassin - Steam explosion in Philly 1937?
Hello - was wondering if anyone would be able to help me.
The younger brother of my great-grandmother supposedly was a worked in the Philadelphia Naval Yard in the 1930s. He supposedly died on 20 August 1937 from burns received in a "steam explosion" on the Destroyer USS Cassin. (this is a family tale - don't know if it is true - his name was Daniel Vautier)
Now, judging by the fact that the USS Cassin (DD-43) was scrapped in 1934 or so, that would leave the USS Cassin (DD-372) as the one upon which the accident supposedly happened, as DD-372 was launched in 1935, but I cannot be sure that the accident even happened, as I can't find any info.
My question is this - does anyone know of an accident or explosion that happened in the Philadelphia Naval Yard, if not on the USS Cassin, then maybe on some other ship/destroyer/etc.? Or, does anyone have any suggestions of where I could possibly go to find info?
THANKS!
