Finding my dad's WWII ship name

I sent away to NARA and got my deceased father's military records. The records say Thomas Samuel Flanigan joined the Navy on March 7, 1944, at the age of 24, and served through Jan 30, 1946. Before WWII, he was going to college, and his military records indicate he had two years toward a B.S. when the war broke out. The records do NOT show what ship he was assigned to, however. He served in the Pacific during the campaigns for Iwo Jima and Okinawa. He was just a serviceman, no officer rank. After being discharged, he came home and got work as a machinist, so this may have been his job in the Navy, too.

My father was recalled from the Reserves during the Korean War, but never left the US. He was with the SubGruFOURFlaGru LANTRESFLT in Green Cove Springs, Florida. Because he had three children by then, he was discharged relatively quickly, and left the Navy the second time on Nov 10, 1950. At the time of his second discharge, his records say he had served a total of 5 yrs. 9 mos. 6 dys., including both terms of service.

Service No.: 865 14, 83
Grade/Rank: MR3
Specialty No.: MR-4413-68
Branch (Korean War recall): USNR V-6

Is there some way I can find out what ship he was on in the Pacific? I would be grateful for any help.
My grandfather's brother was in WW2 and served on a navy ship. I am trying to find out which one, at my aunt's request. Any idea how I go about this?

I tried looking up an enlistment record for him and nothing comes up under his name in any of the databases. I've searched every WW2 list I can find. He was Vernal Lloyd Grant born 4/11/1914 New York.

I have the name of a VFW post and masonic lodge he may have belonged to and I plan on calling there for help, too.

Hello,
My Father served on both of these ships. The McCrary first and then the Henley when he was discharged. I do not know if he was on any other ships between the McCrary and the Henley. My Father was from New Bedford, MA and was trained in Newport, RI and Norfork, VA in 1942. While on the McCrary he and two other New Bedford men were commended for saving their ship when it came under attack by enemy planes. I know next to nothing about my Fathers experiance in the war because he died when I was 14 and at that time I didn't know that he had been in the service. My Mother doesn't know much either because it was before he met her and I guess he didn't talk about it much. So any and all info about these two ships would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
Denise

USS Cassin - Steam explosion in Philly 1937?

Hello - was wondering if anyone would be able to help me.

The younger brother of my great-grandmother supposedly was a worked in the Philadelphia Naval Yard in the 1930s. He supposedly died on 20 August 1937 from burns received in a "steam explosion" on the Destroyer USS Cassin. (this is a family tale - don't know if it is true - his name was Daniel Vautier)

Now, judging by the fact that the USS Cassin (DD-43) was scrapped in 1934 or so, that would leave the USS Cassin (DD-372) as the one upon which the accident supposedly happened, as DD-372 was launched in 1935, but I cannot be sure that the accident even happened, as I can't find any info.

My question is this - does anyone know of an accident or explosion that happened in the Philadelphia Naval Yard, if not on the USS Cassin, then maybe on some other ship/destroyer/etc.? Or, does anyone have any suggestions of where I could possibly go to find info?

THANKS!
Kelley Wood
Fullerton, CA, USA

US Store-ship Supply 1865-1868

My great-great grandfather enlisted in the US Navy in March 1865 and discharged from the US Store-ship Supply in June 1868. His papers have his name as Kanute Olsen, Ordinary Seaman. I am searching for shipping manifests, routes and tours, name lists, anything associated with this time period for this ship. I did find some pictures of the ship and that in 1865 it went to China.

I'd also like to know how or where to search to see if he was on any other ships during that time.

Thanks for any assistance!!!!!!!

I am one of the daughters of Billy Ray Godwin, Sr. who was on board the USS Mercury during 1955-1957 (?) along with his twin brother, Bobby Day Godwin...he loved being a part of this wonderful crew and kept in touch with many of his "mates." However, on Nov. 5, 2006, my father passed away after a short battle with cancer. Before he died, he asked me to continue keeping his scrapbooks up-to-date. If anyone knew my dad or his brother while on the ship, I would love to know. I have seen a few personal emails from "charlie." Also, my brother is a former Navy boy himself...I'm sure he would also love to know some stories about our dad, he is named Billy Ray, Jr. Thank you for taking time to read this...
sincerely, fonnie godwin godwin

I'm trying to find out information about my grandfather who was a marine during wwii in the pacific. My family doesn't know a lot about what he did other than that he helped strap others into planes and taxied planes. He wasn't a flier though. I recently found out he was on the S.S. President Tyler but web searches for this ship turn up very little. It's also possible there was more than one version of this ship name.

Can anyone on this board help with where this ship went and what units it carried?

New to the subject, we were interested in finding more about my wifes ancestor, William Overend - a Gunner aboard HMS Stork from 1808-13.He was appointed a Gunner in 1806.

I'm told that, and we were surprised to hear, that Gunners were allowed to have their wives with them at sea. Is this correct?

I couldn't seem to turn up a picture or details of HMS Stork, searches brought up later vessels.

Any remarks, corrections, suggestions, to extending the information we have would be appreciated.

Thankyou.

Guadalcanal or Okinawa - ship sunk

Family lore says my father, Thomas Samuel Flanigan, in the Navy, was aboard a ship sunk off Guadalcanal or Okinawa (he was at both island invasions). He survived or I would not be here. But he is dead now, and I have no way to identify his ship. Were there many ships sunk during those invasions, or is it possible to determine his? I have tried writing to NARA for his records, but it seems it will take a very long time to get them.

In April '45 the Army sent me home from Europe on the USS Ernie Pyle..I am in the process of preparing a model of this ship. I have plans of her but lack information about the location of machinery and other objects on her decks and cabin sides. I would appreciate any photos that are available that show views of her. Even photos of people that have background views would be helpful.
I would not keep or destroy your pictures. They can be sent as attachments on e mails or sent to me and I will return them after I scan them.
Any information, even small, would be appreciated.

We have pictures of him on the ship and the writing on the picture says the Tacoma in Mexican waters. It shows my Great Grandfather and other crew members hauling a shark out of the water and also one showing the shark hanging by its tail. My mother and I are trying to date these pictures so that we might have an idea what years he served on the Tacoma. Anyone with any info about the Tacoma please respond.
Thank you very much.
Denise

He had his photo taken along with a shipmate. I don't know who the shipmate was, if anyone had a relation on the New Mexico at that time perhaps you could identify the guy. He was probably late teens to early 20's. They were dressed up in cowboy outfits.

I know that different ships, had boxing matches. My father said he was a boxer for his ship, USS Fanshaw Bay CVE70.
I saw a picture when I was younger, of my father in boxing attire, in the ring. Does anyone know if by chance the Navy kept those pictures on file, or if they may have been sent to the Navy Historical Center? I would love to get of copy of my dad's, if it is out there somewhere? Thanks, Roxanna

rmh1dmh@yahoo.com
I e-mailed the NARA in Waltham Ma. and asked how I could find out where the USS Paducah was in May 1910?

The answer they e-mailed back to me was

This is response to your inquiry of November 30th concerning the whereabouts of the the naval ship USS PADUACH First the ship was assigned to the Carribean Squadron patrolling the Carribean Sea and adjecent ports in eastern South America and eastern Mexico. Its naval home station might have been San Juan, Puerto Rico or Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

I do not know if the Laben Paxton abord this ship was my great grandfather or not but it is a start.

I hope this question and answer may be helpful to someone else.

Aine

Jim Tubbs, et al:

I served onboard Recovery from 6/68 to 4/71. Made several Med cruises, and a couple of Caribbean cruises. I was a radioman (RM3), and your name rings a bell! I also served with other ops types, such as guys with names like Webb, Ellison, Ward, Bravar; heck, too many to name. Skipper was HJ Robertson, who relieved an LCDR named Warren. Subsequently relieved by a guy named Clark, in Naples.Give me a shout....

Just received the military records of my father under the Freedom of Information Act. It seems that he served two different times and was assigned to several different ships in the Navy. I'd like to know as much as I can about these ships. I've been to the Navy website, but they only had info on one of the ships. Can someone else help?

Assignments and Geographical Locations: Uss Northhampton, NTC, Norfolk, VA -- Uss Muliphen (AKA61), USS Altiar (AD11), SCTC, Miami, FLA, USS SC1342, USS YMS 176, USS Panamint (AGC13).

Any and all help would be appreicated. Thanks in advance. TJ

I am trying to find the exact burial location of August Zakrzewski, who was killed in the Point Honda naval disaster off the coast of CA in September of 1923. His body was shipped back to Omaha, Nebraska and buried at St. Mary Magdalene Cemetery here. The problem: the cemetery does not have the book containing the burials during that time frame; it has been lost for good.
I have walked the cemetery, and either his marker has broken long ago or he never had one. I have tried the American Legion Post South O, the VA, the monument companies, the undertaker, etc and no luck.
Can anyone help me find him? Does anyone recognize the name? Do you know anyone related to him or did you maybe visit a grave nearby and remember actually seeing a marker for August? Do you have other ideas?
I would like to get him a military marker, since the Branch of the VA that deals with that says that there was never a marker requested for him.
Thank you!

I am looking for more information on my grandfather, and am hoping someone out there living knew him. His name was Billy Exline, he enlisted on 1/21/1946 and served for one year ten months and six days. According to his service record, he received the American Theatre Victory Medal in WW2 on 9/25/1947 and issued a Presidential Testimonial Certificate on 9/15/1947. I'm not sure that I understand all of his service record, but it looks like he served on/at the following:
NTC San Diego, CA; 1161CB (D), Attu, Alaska; 650 CBMU, Attu, Alaska? I'm not sure what any of that means, but there aren't any traditional ships listed on his record unless I'm reading it all wrong. He was Hon C.O.G., at the USN Recieving Station in Seattle WA. Can anyone tell me anything about him, or what exactly any of the above information means?
Thanks,
Melissa
