Ist Georgia Militia command of Brigadier Gen. John Floyd. Under his command was Harris Regiment. Harris Regiment was engaged on Jan. 27, 1814 at Fort Definance on Calibee Creek Mississippi Territory. Present day location is 25 miles east of Montgomery Alabama.
At this battle my 4th Great Grandpa , James P. Snow was killed.
I am trying to locate a possible burial site of this soldier.

Fort Definance was only a brush and log's piled up for some protection against the Redstick Warriors. Not a regular Fort.
Any information would be most appreciated.

How much did the War of 1812 contribute to the Creek Indian Wars? Folks will surely be talking about it when Old Knoxville Days celebrates Benjamin Hawkins and the Creek Legacy Nov. 12 and 13, 2005, in Crawford County, GA. This living history festival will feature as special guests members of the Lower Muscogee Creek Tribe from Whigham, GA, who will be camped in Knoxville to demonstrate tribal skills of the early 1800s. The festival will also feature an old-fashioned Sacred Harp Singing, handcraft vendors, exhibits, hands-on children's activities, music, mule wagon rides, and drama. We have not been able to find War of 1812 re-enactors to participate. If you know someone who'd like to come, please let us know. And PLEASE COME.
For information, see www.rootsweb.com/~gacchs or call the Chamber of Commerce at 478-836-3825.
I'm trying to find any resources that might lead to me to find a (Jas) Henry Scott, who could have served during the War of 1812.

He was born possibly in Georgia in 1792 and appeared on the Franklin County, Alabama census for 1820. Since the Franklin County, AL Courthouse records were destroyed for this time period, I'm hoping a military record might shed some light on this individual.

Thanks.

Chuck Parker
Tejas1829@aol.com

Georgia, Jones' Regiment

Jones Regiment Georgia Militia.
Captains
Henry Lane, Samuel Lane, Thomas Anderson, James Saffold,
Adam Saffold.
Georgia in 1810 was about 3/4 Indian Territory. The counties that three of these Captains' came from was Morgan County. Morgon County bordered Indian territory and hence your soldier may not have made a census for 1810 if he was in any of the Indian territory land. Another Captain came from
Franklin. I have not successfully run down Jones yet so I could state clearly who he was, but you are correct in assuming that he was the Commanding Officer. You would want to also see what you might locate on this Regiment through County & Town Histories, besides checking for information in the state archives. Prior to and at the outbreak of the war of 1812 there were a number of actions into Spanish Florida through Indian territory in which your soldier could have been involved in. The CMSR file will show some information for him when the Regiment was sworn into US service, during the war of 1812, but if he was active prior to this swearing in there may be further records on him at a state level. You would want to look at these counties on a map guide to the U. S. Federal census, as they were not the same then as now.
Another interesting thing is that the County next to Morgan County was Randolph County which was later renamed to Jasper in 1812 ?? Maybe there is some connection for him there as well. There was another Randolph County which borders on Miss. formed later on in 1828.
Finding or building history for these Regiments can be done
but definitely with an expenditure of time, and often financially as well.
Patrick

Hi,

I just posted an old newspaper article reporting that John H. DEUBELL of Savannah, GA, had outfitted a 113-ton schooner and donated it to the service of the United States free of charge during the War of 1812. Wow! This was scanned from an original issue (NOT microfilm!) of The War newspaper (NY, yes, published especially for the war!) dated August 15, 1812, and you can see it online here:

http://theoldentimes.com/johnhdeubell12war1812.html

I hope it's helpful!

Barbara
http://theoldentimes.com/war_news.html
http://theoldentimes.com/old_news_ga.html
http://theoldentimes.com
GA Military Records

I found an interesting set of microfilm at the Dallas Texas library in regard to the War of 1812.

It was titled "Georgia Military Affairs 1773 - 1837", and is a typed transcription of miscellaneous letters, reports, and some muster and pay rolls. It is fragmentary - I found my folks unit before and after the dates I need, but not during. There are letters about the quality of rifles, supplies, just a variety of topics.

There are four rolls with several volumes, and the period 1814-1819 is covered in Volume 4. The series was identified as GRG-3-1829, but I can't say whose numbering system that is.

I can not offer to do any research with these, but they do exist, and may be of interest for general War of 1812 research.
