British POW from HMS JAVA
Family stories say that William SHATFORD serving on the HMS JAVA was taken prisoner after the battle with the USS CONSTITUTION off the coast of South America. According to the story, he ended up being released in Nova Scotia where he married and had 11 sons and one daughter. I'm trying to find
1. if there's any record of his service
2. what actually happened to British seamen who were taken prisoner - where were they held, how long were they held, when/where would they have been released.
