War of 1812 Family Reunions

In my job of organizing the Canadian commemoration of the bicentennial of the War of 1812, I want to organize "family reunions" of descendents of the British, American, Canadian and Native combattants. The idea is to organize the reunion close to the anniversaries of battles at the sites where these battles unfolded. In many cases there will be major reenactments of these battles for attendees to enjoy and of course lots of comraderie and " burying the hatchet."

Any interest?

Ron Dale

Have only heard family story that my gr gr grandfather
Joseph Patterson served in the War of 1812. His son
was b. 1812 in Campbell Co., Ky so he most likely joined
in that State rather than Ohio or In. Do not know if he
was militia or regular Army. Would like to find his
records. He was b. 1779 in Pa. Wife's name was Sarah
Stephens. I did order from NARA a record from Ohio
that was not him.

Just curious if anyone might know.

He was supposedly "drafted" in Greene County, Georgia, on October 10, 1814, and served until the end of the war, mustering out in Savannah on March 15, 1815. The Regiment was commanded by Colonel Jess Thomas...anything on battles, campaigns, rosters, etc., would be appreciated.

Searching for information on this company and a soldier named Thomas Carson. I found a record that Thomas Carson enlisted (1814)and served in this Co. for over a year. There's also a note to see the pension record, but I find no evidence online of a pension. Where can I find more information about this Company?

755 Heirs of 11., States-War of 1812 & Revolutionary War.

All these 755, men left family behind. As you can see by the number of names I just did not have room for any information for each name, but it was important to get these names recorded as many family’s are looking for these names? If you see a name on this list and would like some information on them you can write to me at the following and I will be happy to help.
dsegelquist1@cox.net

This information covers the following States of Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, New Jersey, North Carolina, South Carolina, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Virginia, New York and Georgia.

Note. The person who took the census, was either a bad speller or just did not understand the language or just wrote it down the way it sounded. For this reason there will be a lot of missed spelled names. I did not change any of the spelling as there are many ways to spell a name.

You will note that all these men died between 1812 and 1815, so we know that they were in the War of 1812, however that dose not mean they did not fight in the Revolutionary War. More then likely a lot of these men did, so no matter which war he was in it would be a good idea to look over the names on this list as that family member may be here.

Note. This information come off the pensions Rolls housed at the Library of Congress.

Here is an example of the information you may receive.

David Corning was from Connecticut, New London County and was a private of the 25th. Infantry, was placed on the roll May 25, 1819, with a allowance of $48, dollars per year and had received $240, dollars. Commencement of his pension was on February 17, 1815, pension was to end February 17, 1820. He died on August 3, 1814, leaving the heirs of Amasa, Clara, Amasa, Sally, David and Hannah Corning.

Note. Each State is numbered 1 through ??, however the States and not in alphabetical order, but the counties and surnames for each state are in alphabetical order to make your hunt more enjoyable.

Sate of Connecticut.

Fairfield County.

1.
Major John SEXTON, New Jersey

Help help help! I am looking for verification that my G.G.G.Grandfather was actually in the War of 1812, any info would be helpful. Please bear with me here...
In a book on the history of Bergen County, there is an entry for GEORGE BRUCE. He married Catherine Sexton, the daughter of John Sexton. What it says about John is that he was "Major John S. Sexton of Bulls Ferry, veteran of the War of 1812".
It gives the middle initial of 'S' for John. What I know of John is that he was born in 1793 and lived in N.Bergen, Hudson County (I believe all his life?) where he died 22 Sept. 1875. His wife's name was Margaret.
Any help would be appreciated.
The Men Who Mutinied From Fort Jackson Sept., 20, 1814.

These men were from West Tennessee 1st., regiment infantry Militia.

The information is on the court-martial of the many men who mutinied on that day. As the report was over eighty pagers long I can not put down all the testimony, therefore I listed all the men who were charged and the findings of the court. I have also list all the men named who deserted. This information was taken from the three pay rolls of each regiment that deserted. The information will be Rank, Commencement of service, end of service, pay, months of service and remarks.

Now this was a full mutiny, not only did they deserter from Fort Jackson but from other places as well. I have only recorded the information from three company’s, that deserted that day. However there were ten company’s that deserted that day.

If you would like to know more come to my web site listed below and take a look.

Dennis Segelquist
Civilian & Military Surname Searcher
http://www.civilwarthosesurnames.blogspot.com
The years covered are 1812-1828.
Come and take a look.
Dennis Segelquist
Civilian & Military Surname Searcher
http://www.civilwarthosesurnames.blogspot.com
Elam HAYS

I found a reference to Elam Hays in Roster War 1812-14 which was in an appendix of a book "The King's Mountain Men" by Katherine White which is on HeritageQuest Online.

Elam Hays is my 4g-grandfather and I have very little information on him. This listing has a reference at the end that I would like to have someone tell me what it refers to and possibly where I can find it.

HAYS, ELAM
Born in Simsbury, Conn.; aged 35 years; 5 feet 11 inches high; dark complexion; dark hair; black eyes; by profession a cardwainer. Enlisted at Addison March 28 1814 for the period of the war and served in Capt. Wm. Miller's Company and Capt. Gideon Spencer's Company, 30th Regt. Ref: R. & L. 1812, AGO Pages 54, 55, 57.

Elam moved to Addison County Vermont and his son Harley Elam Hayes married a grand-niece of Gideon Spencer. The Hays/Hayes, Spencer and Day families were intermarried and moved from Vermont to Illinois in the early 1830's.

I would appreciate any leads on Elam Hays, he is very elusive and has been hard to document.

His wife applied to sell his land in Illinois, which was purchased under a land warrant for his service in "Captain Disha's Company 24th Regiment United States Infantry War of 1812."

Richard Jones was born in South Carolina in 1791 but also resided at a some point, in Tennessee. Is there a way to find out where he lived when he enlisted/was drafted, where he served and fought and for how long?

We are absolutely new at anything connected to this particular war.

Thank you.

Tom and Sandy Watrous

rifle company supplies

My ancestor, Jacob Getzendanner, was the Capt of a company of riflemen based in Annapolis, MD during the War of 1812. His Compiled Military Service Record includes documents which refer to the number of men in his unit and then "The Quarter Master will issue (eg) 6 feet 2 inches of ??? agreeable to the above return (which documents # of men in the company)". Elsewhere, the record indicates the unit is alloted 2" of ??? per man. The word looks like fuel, but that doesn't seem correct and I haven't been able to figure out what it means from researching the War and artillery supplies. Does anyone have an idea of what would be issued to a rifle co. in inches? Thanks.

Descendents Reunions

As the bicentennial of the War of 1812 approaches, many plans are being made to ensure that the commemorations are spectacular and meaningful. Canada and the United States are working jointly on events and legacy projects that will last long after the commemorative events are over.

Among these events will be a series of "family reunions" to which descendents of soldiers who fought in certain battles of the War of 1812 will gather on the battlefield, on the anniversary, to witness and participate in some very special events.

There are many descendents out there. For example, if all descendents of a single American soldier, Canadian soldier, British soldier and Aboriginal soldier gathered in one spot, there would be close to 400,000 people! Of course we do not expect that sort of response but would like to hear from anyone interested.

Ron Dale

My gg greatfather James Murray, migrated from Scotland, fought in the War of 1812 and upon discharge was granted homestead land in Illinois. He supposedly married a Cherokee Indian lady, (name unknown) - they eventually settled in Eldorado, Illinois. From that point, they or more than likely their children, moved to Ripley County, Missouri. Any info would be appreciated.

An ancestor of mine, William Montgomery is said to have been a private during the War of 1812, then commissioned as a Captain of the 11th Regiment of the Militia by Governor Joseph McMinn in 1821. He is said to have participated in Jackson's Creek Campaign in 1814.

William was born in Washington Co., NC/TN in 1788 & died in Sevier Co., TN in 1840. He married Elizabeth "Betsey" Winton. I have been unable to locate any information on the 11th Regiment. I found that Joseph McMinn did not become governor of Tennessee until after the war. Can anyone help?? I would like to identify which regiment William participated in during this war.

Thanks in advance! Peggy

Thomas B Fowler

Searching for information about Thomas B. Fowler(my ggg grandfather) who fought in the War of 1812 and enlisted from Maryland or Ohio. I believe he was born between 1780 and 1790 because he is in the 1830 census as being between 40 an 50. He purchased land in Salt Creek, Holmes County, Ohio in 1815 and died there in 1835. He left a wife Mary, (Stahl or Steele) and four children, Hezekiah C, B: 1822, James Brewster,(my gg grandfather) B: 1826, Layman Dowell B: 1832 and Elizabeth Fowler B: 1834. Mary turned over guardianship of the children to Lorenzo Dow Fowler, B: 1815. I first thought Lorenzo Dow was Thomas' eldest son. He is listed as the son of Thomas Fowler and Mary Stahl in the bio of Lorenzo's son Phillip Laffer Fowler; however Mary refers to him as her “Friend” in the Probate Record. Very confusing. I have information about Thomas' descendants, but I cannot find any other information about him, his parents or his siblings. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Pamela (Fowler) Sweeney

North Carolina detached militia -- Joel HELMS

In a 1975 manuscript, Sara Myers asserted, "It is on record that Joel Helms [b. 1793, son of John Whitehead Helms] served in the War of 1812 in the detached Militia from Anson County, North Carolina, under Captain Benjamin A. Lanier, 22 Feb to 4 May 1815...." This statement was not included in the book "Helms Descendants 1720-1991" that Myers co-authored with Gerald Helms and William Helms, and she did not list a source for her 1975 statement.

I've just started looking; but so far, I haven't found any muster rolls that include Joel Helms.

I do find a "Joel Helmer" in the 2nd Regiment from Mecklenburg County NC but under Cpt. David Moore, and I find Capt Benjamin Lanier listed with the "Troops at Wadesboro," but with only a listing of the officers. I do not find Joel Helm/Helmer/Helms/etc. in the Index to War of 1812 pension files.

ANY information about either Anson or Mecklenburg regiments and/or Joel's participation in the war would be most welcome.

ANY suggestions for where I can search more productively would also be tremendously helpful!

Thanks,
Nancy Helms
NLHelms@gmail.com
I found a discussion that took place years ago on this board about graves that were marked with War of 1812 markers. Rather than respond to that one, I'm posted a new one.

I have come across a couple of family graves that have these markers. With the DAR I know you can have them mail you lineage. How do you research the 1812 marker?

Can it be researched by the name of the person whose grave is marked? I don't believe that these are the actual veteran grave, but descendants of veterans.

Thanks

Jeff

Mobile Bay 1815

In "Goodspeed's Biography" one ancestor, my great grandpa's brother, wrote (paraphrasing) that his father, John Richey, had been a veteran of the War of 1812, and was at Mobile Bay when the war ended. I have had no luck however finding a list of soldiers that were stationed there.

In 1850 and 1860 Arkansas census records it says John Richey was b. Va in the 1790s. I was able to find it said those troops at Mobile Bay were under Jackson and it said that he did the recruiting of his troops in Tennessee, so maybe John Richey was b. in Virginia but as a child his parents went to Tennessee? We don't know. We suspect these Richeys might have previously been near Augusta/Rockbridge/Amherst Counties in Virginia, but can not prove it.

I have never seen a list of the units that served in Mobile Bay in 1814/1815 either, altho I did try with internet searches -- I just found a little mentioning it as being the last battle of the war I think it was. This was a few months ago so I might have forgotten the details.

Any help on the names of the units at Mobile Bay in 1815, where they came from, commanding officers or best of all, individual units and the names of individual soldiers. Barring this info being online, is there a national archive I can write/call that might have this information? I don't know if his wife filed for a pension. Where can this information be found? I appreciate any info.

thank you,

Vance Hawkins

I just put up a page on my website called ( 27 Ships & 360 Names From The 1700’s With Certificates. ) The idea behind this page is to help those of you who are looking for family members that were on ships in the 1700’s but can’t find a roster of them. Although these are not rosters these men did service on these ship at one time.

The info comes from Library Of Congress from a report called: A statement of all the claims which have been adjusted and allowed at the Treasury Department, and for which certificates of registered debt issued, in virtue of a law entitled " An act providing for settlement of claims of persons under particular circumstances barred by limitations heretofore established." passed on March 27, 1792.

The information will be Ship, Date of certificate, Name, Rank, Year of commencing of certificate & Amount.

Note. The years covered are 1776-1795

To see this list come to my website at the following address:
Dennis Segelquist
Military & Civilian Surname Searcher
http://civilwarthosesurnames.blogspot.com

War of 1812 - Bounty Land Grants?

I just received a bounty land grant file for an individual I'm researching. The land grant information shown is under the Act of September, 28, 1850 and the paperwork is dated in the mid-1850s.

Were there earlier land grants related to the War of 1812?

I'd like to document the source of land which this individual sold in McMinn Co., TN in the 1830s - would land in Eastern TN have been received as a land grant earlier than the mid-1830s or were land grants only made after 1850?

By the way, it appears from the documentation that he received 80 acres in Murray Co., GA (adjoining TN)in 1856.

Henry MILLER, Pennsylvania

Hello,

I saw a recent post that mentions "White's index". I am not familiar with this index but wonder if possibly someone could do a lookup for me on my ggg-grandfather Henry Miller from Pennsylvania (possibly either Bedford or Huntingdon County). I've looked in Ancestry records at the 20+ Henry Miller's in Pennsylvania, NARA films at our State Library, and the PA Archives. So far I have not been able to find my Henry.

I did find a Henry Miller m. to Elizabeth Mathews from Huntingdon County, PA, who served in Capt. E. Tipton's Company of the PA Militia in the NARA film "Index to Compiled Service Records of Volunteer Soldiers Who Served During the War of 1812" record group 94 publication number 204 - however this is not my Henry.

My ggg-grandfather Henry Miller was born 21 May 1788 in Pennsylvania and died 24 Jan 1871 in Cromwell Twp, Huntingdon County, PA. He married Susannah maiden name unknown. Henry and Susannah had nine children all born in Huntingdon County, PA. So far I have only four of the children: Abraham b. abt 1823; Barbara b 27 Oct 1825; Isaac b. abt 1830; and David b. abt 1831 d. 15 Aug 1858.

Does anyone on the list have experience locating an ancestor with a common name from existing 1812 records? Or other records I could search?

Any help or suggestions appreciated.

Thanks,

Sue Palmer

War of 1812 prisoner taken to england...help!!

hi all, i've been trying to figure out how to find out where an ancestor was taken prisoner during the war of 1812, if in fact this actually occurred. the family story, not sure if this is true or not, was that he was somehow wounded and taken prisoner on board a british man of war and put in prison in bristol, england for a year or so. but i can't find any information on the british prison camps other than there being 6 of them. not sure where they are. does anyone have any additional information on these camps? or any suggestions on where i might be able to find a record of his capture/prison term/release, etc.? thanks very much!
