Peggy thanks for your reply - in the intervening 3 years since my original post I found where the land was and the family that it went to. Interestingly enough it went to an Ankeny family, who had one of their sons go to FL and start a village "Ankona" on the SE coast of FL, about 5 miles from where I grew up. Couldn't get the connection to why Eliza sold the property to the Ankeny's but... Eliza didn't really even know where her husband died... poor dear.
Thanks for your help.
Joyce

You can go to the Bureau of Land Management website at: www.glorecords.blm.gov and put in the soldier's name, searching for him as the "warrantee". When you find him, you will see 5664 as the "document number" (the "160" in the number you gave means 160 acres, and the "50" means that they applied for the warrant under the act of 1850).

In this case, Eliza the widow applied for it under the act of 1850, and sold it to someone else. Most widows did not actually patent land with the warrants themselves, they sold the warrant certificates to someone else for cash.

The bounty land application paperwork would be in with the pension file (at NARA), but the surrendered warrant certificate itself would be in a separate file at NARA.

Re: Land Bounty, Warrantee: Jonathan Wood, PA Militia

Catharine Wood, widow of Jonathan the 1812 soldier, did not get "bounty land". She did not get land at all, anywhere. What she got was a "bounty land warrant" for her husband's service. This was a paper certificate that could be used to patent 160 acres of land.

Jonathan had not served long enough, apparently, to qualify for a bounty land warrant immediately after the war, but in 1855 Congress relaxed the requirements and granted more bounty land to all veterans retroactively, as long as they or their widows or heirs could prove that the veteran had served for long enough and had been honorably discharged.

Catharine would have applied for this bounty land warrant in 1855, and she would have received a fancy warrant certificate. She had the choice to either used the warrant to get 160 acres of free land for herself, or she could sell the warrant to someone else. She apparently sold the warrant to Wilcox and Jackson, who then selected land in Wisconsin. Why do you think she didn't sign the warrant over to them? Most widows sold the bounty land warrants because they needed the cash.

In order to apply for and receive the bounty land warrant, Catharine would have had to prove her husband's service and honorable discharge, and prove that she had been legally married to him and was his heir.

If you need Catharine's maiden name, the bounty land warrant application file at NARA would have it, along with their wedding date and place. Also, the surrendered bounty land warrant file at NARA would have the actual bounty land warrant certificate, and on the back of the certificate would be where Catharine signed it over to the buyers.

I found this today. a search of Fold3 found no-one with either known spelling of my surname of interest. correction, their search engine malfunctioned, there is information for Dunivers, but I had to go back and search from the home page to get them to come up. there is nothing for Christopher, however.

.....""Chris" Duniver had been the wagoner of Capt. C. P. Beatty's company in the war of 1812. And when a war-cloud again rose in the northwest, and the call to arms was made by Governor Robert Lucas in 1835, drum and fife, in martial strains, inspired the latent patriotic spark to blood heat, "Chris" again kept step, as a recruit, to go and hurl the invading "Wolverines" from Ohio's sacred soil. This war cloud blew away, but its heroes still live in history."

Christopher Dunheiffer is related to my husband, either an older brother, cousin or uncle of his ancestor.

does anyone have access to records, esp. for 1835, and for Capt. Beaty's troup? do these records have as good data in them as some Civil War records?

Foot note has some service date. The National Archives has the records. Look for all possible people you might have and ask to pull the records. In the afternoon go upstairs and look at recordes one at a time and ask them to copy what you want. You may think that serving one to three months is very little, but it all counts. If the record says your guy was a deserter, see if there service after that entry. People took off to plant, harvest, etc. They missed roll call, thats all. Still good. Get an 1812 Society in your area, fill out the paperwork, meet at the country club and enjoy some new friendships. Skip Gustafson

Hello. Found a Land Bounty for a Jonathan Wood, Private, who served under Capt. Magill's Company, Pennsylvania Militia, War of 1812. I think this is Capt. William Magill of the Bucks County Rangers. The land was in Wisconsin. Jonathan's widow is Catharine Wood and the land was to go to her. But the land was assigned and granted to a George G. Wilcox & Andrew B. Jackson, July 1, 1872.
Can anyone tell me why Catharine wouldn't get the land bounty? She did not sign it over to the men mentioned above.

I am researching my ancestor, Jonathan Wood born abt. 1787 in Virginia. Married Catherine ?. Jonathan died in Vigo Co., Indiana abt. 1836. Catherine remarried in 1837 and dies in Vigo County, Indiana in Sep 1849. My Catherine was born in Ohio. I cannot not find where they were married or lived prior to 1830. They are in the Parke County, Indiana census in 1830. I am reaching out but, am hoping maybe some one might know about this Jonathan & Catharine land bounty. Thanks. Carla

William Williams - Private - 19th Regiment U.S. Infantry - died 1814

Searching for information concerning Pennsylvania soldier, William Williams (c.1790/96?-1814) who was a private in the 19th Regiment United States Infantry (Captain Allen Trimble's Company) during the War of 1812; he died September 3, 1814, possibly during the Niagara campaigns.

William Williams is thought to have been born in Pennsylvania sometime between 1790 and 1796. The name of his father is not known, although his mother was Mary Williams. Sometime after Mr. Williams died, his widow, Mary Williams married James McMonigle (c.1768-aft.1814). Very little is known of Mary prior to her marriage to James McMonigle. James' wife is also sometimes shown as "Osse McMonigle," with a nickname of "Mollie."

James and Mary McMonigle were married in Pennsylvania sometime before 1800. James was shown as living in Elizabeth Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania in the 1800 census (listed as "James McManigel). James and his family were living in Nottingham Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania in 1810. James apparently died sometime after the birth of his youngest daughter, Rebecca McMonigle (born 1814). By 1844, his widow (Mary McMonigle) and four of her children: Daniel McMonigle, Sarah (McMonigle) Jacobs, Thomas James McMonigle, and Catherine (McMonigle) Applegate were all living in southern Harrison County, Indiana.

In that year (1844), four of Mary McMonigle's children (named above) appeared before the court in that county and presented "satisfactory evidence" that they were the heirs at law in fee of William Williams, dec'd. The entire record is reproduced below:

"At a court held for said County of Harrison in the second Judicial Circuit of said state, the same being a court of record, at the April term thereof, to wit: on the 9th day of April 1844, satisfactory evidence was addressed in court to prove that Daniel McMonigle, Thomas McMonigle, Sarah Jacobs, and Catherine Applegate are the only children alive of Mary McMonigle, and that there are no descendants of any other children of said Mary alive, and that said children were born in lawful wedlock, and that their father hath long since departed this life.

It was also further proved to the satisfaction of said court that said Mary McMonigle is still alive and resident in said county, but too old and inferior to attend court, and further that the said Daniel McMonigle, Thomas McMonigle, Sarah Jacobs, and Catherine Applegate and the said Mary McMonigle are the heirs at law of in fee to William Williams deceased, who was a private in the 19th Regiment Infantry, and died while in the service of the United States on the 3rd of September 1814. The said William Williams having no children or their descendants alive nor any full brother or sister or their descendants, the said Daniel, Thomas, Sarah, and Catherine being the half brothers and sisters and said Mary being the mother of said William Williams deceased."
(Source: Harrison County, Indiana Order Bk. G, page 21)

This document clearly shows that William Williams was the son of Mary McMonigle by a previous marriage (i.e. Mr. Williams) and that he (William) had at least four half-siblings: Daniel, Sarah, Thomas, and Catherine McMonigle. Technically, there was a fifth sibling, Rebecca (McMonigle) Applegate. Rebecca was probably left out of this document due to the fact that she was living in Ohio at the time (1844).

According to this 1844 document, William Williams was a private in the 19th Regiment U.S. Infantry during the War of 1812. I have only found a few mentions of the 19th Regiment Infantry on the internet. This Regiment seems to have had ties to Ohio and Pennsylvania. In the summer of 1814, the 19th Regiment Infantry was ordered to the Niagara frontier. Major-General Jacob Brown seems to have played a large role in this particular regiment. I believe this regiment participated in the capture of Fort Erie and the Battle of Lundy's Lane. Afterwards, I read that the 19th Regiment Infantry was placed in the Second Division commanded by Colonel James Miller.

I suppose that when the 19th Regiment U.S. Infantry was ordered to the Canada border, that my William Williams enlisted as a private. I don't yet have a copy of William's enlistment record (if one exists). William was probably living in either Washington or Allegheny County, Pennsylvania at the time of his enlistment date (perhaps early or mid-1814). William Williams died while in military service on September 3, 1814.

The 1844 court document mentioning William Williams, dec'd was apparently the first step by his mother and half-siblings in attempting to apply for a land warrant based on William's military service in the War of 1812. They were apparently successful in getting a land warrant. This warrant was necessary in order to apply for a land patent. Again, they were successful, receiving a land patent (#27314) in Sullivan County, Indiana sometime prior to 1856.

In 1856, Daniel McMonigle and his sister, Sarah (McMonigle) Jacobs sold the land received in Sullivan County, Indiana to Shadrack Wise. The body of the deeds read: "which land was patented to William Williams, deceased, private soldier, commanded by Captain Trimble of the 19th Regiment United States Infantry, and patented by No. 27,314 in the District of Lands, subject to sale at Vincennes, Indiana."

The legal description of this land was: Pt. NE 29, 9, 8 - 40 acres, Bk/Pg 13/148.

William Williams's half-siblings: Thomas McMonigle and Catherine Applegate apparently sold their shares of the bounty land patent (?) to other people because no deeds have been found mentioning Thomas or Catherine with the William Williams land patent.

Both the 1844 document and 1856 deeds clearly show that William Williams enlisted as a private soldier in the 19th Regiment U.S. Infantry, Captain (Allen) Trimble's Company; William died in service on September 3, 1814; he died without any children; his only heirs were his mother and his McMonigle half-siblings.

Additional research shows the "Captain Trimble" mentioned in the 1856 deeds was in fact, Captain Allen Trimble (1783-1870) of the 19th Regiment Infantry (Trimble was later elected Governor of Ohio).

I found the following enlistment record on the internet for "Allen Wallace." Allen Wallace has no connection to William Williams, but Allen Wallace was a private in the 19th U.S. Regiment Infantry, as will be seen below:

NAME: Allen Wallace
ORGANIZATION,
RANK: Priv.
ORGANIZATION,
REGIMENT:19 US Inf.
ORGANIZATION,
COMPANY COMMANDER: (left blank)
DESCRIPTION,
HEIGHT: 5'8"
DESCRIPTION,
EYES: Brown
DESCRIPTION,
HAIR: Dk
DESCRIPTION,
COMPLECION: Fair
DESCRIPTION,
AGE: 17
DESCRIPTION,
OCCUPATION: Farming laborer
BIRTHPLACE, TOWN: (left blank)
BIRTHPLACE, STATE: Va. (should be Vt) ENLISTMENT, WHEN: Mar. 18/14
ENLISTMENT, WHERE: Worthington (Ohio)
ENLISTMENT, BY WHOM: D.W. Lt. Pinney
ENLISTMENT, PERIOD: D.W. (Duration of the War?) REMARKS: D.R. Capt. C.A. Trimbles Co. Feby 16 - J.R. Feby 28 + May 31/15 Present Discharged from Lt. Jn. McElvains Co. at Chillicothe Ohio. June 6/15 - Term expired - See pension case

This record proves that enlistment records for the 19th Regiment U.S. Infantry do in fact exist. I am going to attempt to order William William's enlistment record and bounty land warrant application file (if one exists). William Williams (or his heirs) apparently did not receive any type of military pension.

William Williams was one of the more than 2000 soldiers who died during the War of 1812. I have read that a book, "Known Military Dead During the War of 1812," written by Clarence Stewart Peterson exists. If anyone has this book, I would really like to know if "William Williams" is listed among the casualties of that war.

Also, if anyone can tell me more about William Williams' enlistment record or if he had a bounty land warrant application file, please contact me.

Jesse L. The over matched British army, short of men and ammunition, faced certain defeat in a conventional, daylight encounter. Brought to bay by a larger force, there was only one possible out – turn and face the strange – strike the pursuers in the middle of the night.

In this ground-breaking study of a battle in which both sides were essentially blind, James Elliott sheds light, not only on a violent donnybrook in the dark, but also on the bizarre train of events that occasioned it, including:

The massive textbook operation that quickly overwhelmed Fort George, but allowed the British army to escape.
The failed British assault at the eastern end of Lake Ontario that hobbled American plans to confront the British army on the Niagara.
The unlikely chain of circumstance that led not one, but two American generals to surrender their swords.
The curious fate of the British brigadier who lost his hat, his horse and his command during the battle.
The powerful fear of native warriors that conjured “all the Indians in Canada” on the battlefi eld at Stoney Creek.
The repeated chance appearances by the Royal Navy squadron on Lake Ontario that unnerved the American high command.
The fable of the militiaman who, a full 12 years after his death in 1877, was accorded laurels as the “hero” of Stoney Creek.
The second Battle of Stoney Creek that played out over 20 years with the combatants split on gender lines.

With 10 original maps, over 100 illustrations, portraits and photographs, many never seen before, as well as appendices on battlefield archaeology and the little-known “monument war.”

Published by Robin Brass Studio
www.strangefatality.com
There wasn't really a national draft during the War of 1812, so not every man of age served.

Regarding pension records, they exist, but few soldiers applied for and received pensions from the War of 1812 as compared to the Civil War, when pensions were granted early and rather freely.

Men who served in volunteer state regiments (not regular federal regiments) should have a Compiled Military Service Record on file at the National Archives. These are second hand written attendance cards usually with scant information. There are better ways to learn about the doings of your soldier.

If your soldier was one of the lucky few to receive a pension, then yes, a great deal of family information can be derived from this record.

I Hope this was helpful.

Kelly

Looking for a John George Smith/Schmidt, b. 1785 PA. If what I've read is true, and they were required to have Military service, then my question is this: Are there pension records for the War of 1812, and how much information could you get from them? Or, is it just Bounty Land Records? Thank you.

All able bodied white men 18-45 were required to serve in the Pa Militia by law. You should order his bounty land records that were granted if he served 2 weeks or more active duty, they should give some information to the active duty tours he served. Militia from that area served at Black Rock, NY, in 1812, also I believe as part of Col. Rees Hill's Regiment that served at Erie in 1813, then under Harrison in Ohio and some crossed over into Canada with his army. The publsihed Pa Archives 2nd series volume 12 and 6th series volumes 6-10 give the rosters of active duty units, ancestry.com also has some info.
My 3x's great grandfather, David Koon (Kuhn),was mustered into the military on May 12, 1812. He served as a private in the 89th Regiment, 1st Brigade, 11th Division, (Mifflin, Huntingdon & Centre Counties). He was born 10 Jan 1770, in Lancaster County, married in Franklin County and then, in 1800, moved with his wife to Centre County, where he lived, raised his family, and died circa 1830. I'm interested in learning something about any military campaigns in which he may have served during the War of 1812; or any assistance in researching military campaigns for the unit in which he served.

I am a descendant of John White who originally entered the US from France about 1801 under his birthname of John Blonthiel. He changed his name to John White and became a farmer in the vicinity of Punsxutawney, PA. He fought in the War of 1812. He is buried in the Punxsutawney, PA cemetery along with his wife Kezia and one of his sons John who fought in the Civil War. I do not see any mention in the list that I have of his descendants of the name Perry G White, so perhaps there is not a connection that you are seeking.

Philip White

My ancestor is John Lee born Pennsylvania, 25 Dec 1794. I do not know if he was in the War of 1812. I believe he was from the area of Washington County, Pa. He married Rebecca Dille and her father was Caleb Dille. The Dille's were from that area and were later found in Belmont County , Ohio before 1820. I would appreciate any information you could find on John Lee. I have not yet located him in Pennsylvania although he gave that as his birth place in the 1850 census.
Thank you in advance.

New information from the pension papers of William Francis revealed his 2nd wife, Damaris' first husband to have been Ebenezer Joles. They were married Jan 1816 at Conneaut, Erie, PA. Ebenezer died 3 Jun 1830 in the state of Maryland. Big question....What led him to Maryland?
Damaris' maiden name was Vaughn, daughter of Charles Vaughn and Elizabeth Morgan. I have not identified any children for Damaris and Ebenezer, although I suspect at least two children. His father, Sylvester Joles/Jolls/Jewel lived next to Charles Vaughn in the 1820 census of Conneaut, Erie, PA. I believe Damaris and Ebenezer were living with one of their parents.
William Francis is on the 1830 census of Lewis, Essex, NY with his family (with Anna Evans). By 1840, Anna had died and William is on the 1840 census of Girard, Erie, PA with some of his children and Damaris.
