I am looking for the children of Thomas and Mary who were from Waterford Ireland.
I know they had a large family - one their daughters was called Hannah and the youngest son called Patrick.
Hannah married Daniel Favel Salloway - they had 2 children
Patrick never married but lived with Hannah in Charleville and he died in Brisbane
They spent a lot of time in Qld around Roma - Surrat and Charleville.
After Mary died Thomas remarried and the children from the first marriage were split up and sent to family relatives to be raised -
I think one of the other daughters was called Kate - Katherine?

Yes David, let me know if you find anything. Maybe that may give me some hope along the way. I will let you know the same. Funny about families, they try their darndest to hide the skeletons in the family so no one knows, but its the skeletons in the closet that give meaning, texture and quality to the family tree. I would hate to think that there was no scandal, no illegal activity etc etc. As I uncover bit by bit, it all helps me to understand my parents and most importantly me ...just a little bit more. what do you reckon. cheers Dianne

Dianne, exactly what I have to battle, my grandmother was married to another in Brisbane 1901,shot through on him sometime 1906,apparently he wasn't a good fella.
She has shot through with the man we are trying to identify, we know that he existed because we have photos of him and her with the children. She had 2 boys to one in Brisbane marriage and 3 [including my dad] to the other in Rockhampton. The whole family always thought the lot belonged to granddad. She lived and eventually died in Rockhampton 1946. That's where I and the rest of the family are all born. We have got her down pat but we'll plod on with grand dad. It'll come. At least we have a little more to go on than you but the same again, no one would speak of or tell about family to the younger ones. Sorry about you coming up with zilch Dianne, we'll help one another if we find something.

David, Interesting what genealogy uncovers isnt it. the father of the 4 soldiers I have searched for was married to some one other than my ggrandmother it seems and had 3 children in that marriage at the same time. No wonder no one in the family will ever discuss any mention of this connection between ggrandfather/mother. they both had things to hide. But we will keep on searching nevertheless. Checked bdm qld and as usual found nothing under all assumed names. If there is anything I can help you with David, just send me an email ok. Cheers Dianne

Dianne, I'm in the same boat with someone using an assumed name. Our grandfather is not who we thought him to be. His surname may be correct or then it might not be. I think our grandmother was a bit cunning in her day too. She's on Trove with her second husband also. Nothing to be embarrassed about, hell I've found quite a few doosies about some family members over the time. I've got an uncle of my mothers, he ended up in St Helenas prison. Misadventure in Rockhampton Qld. It's interesting investigating genealogy, you never know what you might find.

Hi David, Thanks for your help here. will try this option in Qld and see how I go. Yes to the other. His mother was born Caroline Emma Mutton in 1861 in Bathurst NSW. She gave birth to 4 children ( all male ) in S.A in the 1880's. One male child died and I have tried tracking the other 3. Found 2 ( grandfather and his brother who enlisted in W.A) but this one is not listed anywhere. Caroline Emma Mutton married in 1905 to Adolphe Marval. There are many articles about her in TROVE. She was unfortunately an Abortionist and was sentenced to 2yrs imprisonment for manslaughter after a young girls deathh and basically starved herself to death in prison. As for Sydney Waldegrave Carver, her son, he just appears to have disappeared off all records. All I have is that newspaper article of him enlisting in QLD and KIA overseas... Why is he not listed in the AWM ? Maybe he used another name and if that be, how do I find him ? I have searched long and hard for such a long time to no avail. Sorry for rambling but I feel I will never find him. Need to look under Mutton, Carver and even Marval maybe... Thanks so much for guiding me along the way. I need all the help I can get here. thanks Dianne

Sorry Dianne, on Qld BDM they do list deaths of Qld enlisted men who died of causes or KIA WW1. They[Govt] registered them in 1922 and the number is fronted by a prefix "F". You put in actual date or year of death.
I'm not saying that your man could be there but it's worth a try using various names that you can think of.
His Mother or family must have been informed of his enlistment name to be advised that he was KIA. Otherwise how would they know that he died? I did have a look at the article paper listing and the family was aware that he did die. Was that the same Caroline Emma Marval in the "Recorder" Port Pirie SA paper Wed 20 Nov 1940?
Address George St.Norwood ,79, widow.
She was convicted of manslaughter, convicted to 2 yrs imprisonment. She died 1 Jan 1941.
David

I was surprised to find my grandfather listed on deaths Qld as he died wounds July 1918 WW1 but apparently some states did do a listing. You will find them registered 1922 and the ref no. will have a prefix "F".

David

Hi

The only way I can think of is look here-
http://www.awm.gov.au/research/people/all/?Name=reynolds&amp...
This gives you the list of all the Reynolds who served in WW1- look at the embarkation rolls. You can also eliminate those who died from the Roll of Honour.
Then you would have to go to here-
http://www.naa.gov.au/collection/using/search/
Click on Begin you Search, go to Name search at the top and put in surname Reynolds and pick WW1 from drop down line.
Then you would have to go through each service record and see if there is any mention of what you have said after the war.
Not easy and time consuming, but I can see no other way, sorry.
I suppose you could go through the Nominal roll on AWM also and see which ones came home later and look at those first.

regards

Robert

Hi,
You need to search National Archives Australia
WW1 Service records are digitised and available for viewing online.
Look for the blue section
select begin your search
Type name in search box.
When you find a digitised file, click on the little icon to the right that looks like a file.
If the file is not digitsed you will have to apply for the information via the website.

Is this your Sylvester?

KIERNAN Sylvester Francis
Service Number - N81024
Date of birth - 10 Apr 1916
Place of birth - AUBURN,NSW
Place of enlistment - SYDNEY
Next of Kin - KIERNAN Constance

I can see files for Bernard James and Leonard James, none of these files are digitised and would have to be applied for, anything looking familiar?.

Leanne

Hi Leanne,
Thanks for your response. I am mainly looking for WW1. I have looked at the WW2roll and found some info there. I am trying to find any service history in WW1 for Sylvester Francis Kiernan or his brothers. I havent been able to locate his brothers names yet, and was hoping to track that back from next of kin details or similar. I have been told that one of Sylvesters brothers may have been a POW and died in a camp, but dont have much to go on. All I know is Sylvester and his brother's were Tasmanian. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Sean

hi , yes I searched the commonwealth war graves commission site and found a sydney w carver but it says he is buried in the allied section and served under the british. I figured he must have been a british soldier not an aussie, but had no way of checking this
thanks dianne

I am just starting out with my family tree and was wondering if there are any suggestions on where to look online to find Military service history and/or records for WW1 and WW2. I have looked at www.ww2roll.gov.au as a starting point. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Leanne,
The thread that you are referring to re: Caroline Mutton is mine. Caroline Mutton and William Carver are the parents of Sydney Waldegrave Carver but its strange I have been unable to find any reference to him in the Defence Records I have searched. His brother, Frederick Byron Carver enlisted in W.A and I have no problem getting his records however Sydney's Records seem non existent. This is despite his mother's death notice for him as " killed in action overseas" any ideas would be helpful thanks Dianne

Because of some help I got from another post we recently identified this photo as my grandmother's brother Richard Mchale. The military records someone directed me to proved that Richard arrived from Scotland before WWI and joined up and was shipped out from Australia to join his Scottish Unit. We previously thought he did not arrive until after the war.

I had always suspected this was Richard but his grandaughter kept saying he was in a Scottish unit in WWI. The military records also gave us the name of a first wife we did not know about.

I have had this photo for a few years trying to ID it. My Grandmother kept it in a small frame so I knew it must have been important to her but she had brothers that went to England, Australia and stayed in Scotland.

Thanks Everyone! message boards have lead to some great breakthru's for me.

I think their were many similar names popular at the time.

I am having trouble finding out information about an Australian soldier she met with the surname Reynolds who was in the island at the end of WW1, probably on agricutltural training.

Channel Islanders appear in the UK Census records e.g. Edith Le Marquand (1871) appears in Jersey in 1911 born Jersey St Clements but I tend to think that Edith Marie Le Marguand (1899) of Jersey would have been more probable.

WW1 Australian Soldiers based in Jersey, Channel Islands

I am researching a possible event that very few people seem to know about. Apparently at the end of WW1 there were not enough boats to send many soldiers back home. This included Australian soldiers. Many therefore took part in a training scheme to pass the time until there were boats available. This included agricultural training in Jersey, possibly Guernsey and England. I am looking for any more information about those Australian soldiers based in Jersey. In particular a soldier with the surname Reynolds.
