The simple answer is: Recording error.

It sounds like you are not aware of Native American heritage in this bloodline and therefore questioning the entry on the card. You should! The person recording the info either simply misunderstood the question--ignoring the heading of "Indian" and intending to categorize him as a US and not an Indian citizen--or this was an area heavily populated with Native Americans, and they simply got in the habit of checking that box.

The information on that card is not Gospel. It is definitely worth investigating, but don't get too caught up trying to prove what might have amounted to a "bad hair day" for some poor soul sitting at the county courthouse for hours on end!
