My grandfather, Frank Edward Whalen was in the US Navy during WWI. He was born in Maine to FRank H. Whalen and Mary Finnerty Whalen in 1894. I would like to find out where he served (ship, location, service unit... whatever comes up) and when he served. Any kind of info on this elusive man would be most welcome. Thank you so much. I'm new to all of this and have hit many roadblocks.

I'm looking for my g-uncle Harry Cheer. He disappeared after his divorce. But I've been wondering if he joined the fight for WWI. I have no membership on Ancestry but i can do a basic look-up for names. Looking up the WWI draft records, it listed two Harry Cheer'. One was Harry Cheer for , Bronx, NY the other was Harry James Cheer of , San Bernardino, CA. Here is what I do know of my g-Uncle Harry. He was born June 1886 in Ohio (may be Kansas). His parents were Charles Cheer and Susan Weaver, both of England. Harry was married to Chloe Burkett and they had a daughter Phylis, b. abt 1915 in Kansas. If any of those drafts match my Uncle, I'd like to know what the info states...birth date, place, etc. Any help is appreciated.

double-drafted in one lifetime

Greetings:

I found an ancestor who was double-drafted in his lifetime. Frank Leslie Colvin of Catlett TWP, Fauquier County, VA. appears in both the WWI draft registration cards and those from WWII. It's the same person because the birth dates and residences, etc. are identical, and, as you might guess, he's aged the appropriate number of years between the 2 wars. I'm sure Frank wasn't the only double-draftee. I tried to Google this incident to see if it happened often, but have had no luck. What's your experience? I'd like to hear from others who've had the same experience with an ancestor. Please email me at: acolvin.geo@yahoo.com

Gratefully,

Alex Colvin,
author,

"Charles Colvin of Colonial Fauquier County, Virginia and His Descendants, 1766-2006"

WWI draft card "C"--question

I have located the draft registration card --C--for my gr grandfather but I have a question about info on it. Under the general heading of Race are the following: white, negro, oriental and next to those is a heading of "Indian" and underneath are 2 boxes: Citizen and Non-Citizen. Then below all of this is a general heading of U.S. Citizen--with 3 boxes: Native Born, Naturalized, Citizen by Father.
On my gr grandfather's card the following boxes have check marks in them: White, under Indian the "citizen" box is checked, and under U.S. Citizen the box "Native Born" is checked.
My questions are: since the "citizen" box under the "Indian" heading is checked, does this mean that he was partially of Indian heritage?? If not, why would that box be checked along with the one under "Native Born"??? And, also, someone brought up this question: why was the box denoting him as "white" checked if he was of Indian heritage???
Any help with these questions would be greatly appreciated!! Please e-mail me directly at: butterfly1058@hotmail.com
Thanks! Shelia

Draft Census?

I posted this question under another topic:

http://boards.ancestry.com/topics.census.us.mi/624/mb.ashx

It doesn't seem to be getting much attention, so I'll try it here. The description of the database for draft registration cards on Ancestry.com is as follows:
"This database contains an index and images of World War I draft registration cards completed by approximately 24 million men living in the U.S. in 1917 and 1918." Where did the American government get names and addresses for 24 million men? The answer seems fairly obvious: from the previous census.

I became curious when looking at the 1910 US Census of Three Rivers, Michigan on Ancestry.com. Link:

http://content.ancestry.com/iexec/default.aspx?htx=View&...

My great grandfather is listed. He was inducted in 1918. There's a series of annotations in colums 30 - 32 ie., hyphenated digits inside the border, and hand written lines with checkmarks outside the border. There's no key or legend given. I found some clues under the following link:

http://www.archives.gov/genealogy/census/1850-1930.html

It says these notes were "used by Census Bureau tabulators in Washington, DC, to compile statistical data." What data? My theory is in 1910, the American government knew war was brewing in Europe. They used the census to gather pre-selective service data. Any thoughts or comments on this?
Hello,
My grandfather Domenico Salario and his brother Vincenzo Salario went to the USA in 1913, they were born in Chiusa Sclafani,Sicily and went to Streator Illinoise.

When WW1 broke out my grandfather went back to Sicily to fight in the army there, and his brother Vincenzo stayed in America. He died fighting for the American Army.
I know that, because my grandfather got a pension for him.
I never seen the papers, my father told me.

I can`t find any info on Vincenzo Salario, I only found a name Charles Salario, from La Salle, he died on 26 sept 1918 and was missing.
He was in the 138th Infantry regiment, 35th division. There is a tablet at Meuse-Aragone American Cemetery, in Romagne in France. He was born in 1894.

I don`t even know if he was naturalized. He could have taken another name? And afther how long could he be naturalized? and could my grandfatehr have a pension for him if he was nauralized?

Does anyone have more information, or can someone look at the info at ancestry.com for Charles Salario? I don`t have an account there.

In return I may translate something from Dutch, German, or Italian, or look something up in the Dutch archives in The Hague,(i live there)

I attached a file of my greatgrandfather, that are the only papaers I have from Sicily.

Thanks and ciao Eveline Salario

Hello all, looking for a little help.
My great grandfathers 2 brothers were Canadians living in the States when they were drafted for the WWI. I have their draft registration paper. So, where do I go find where they went or what happened to them? I know where to go for Canadian soldiers but I need US Gov. sites where their names are. My mom said her grandfather mentioned one of this brothers was lost when he went to war. With the info thats available now, Im sure I can find what happened to them. Another question, if the men were deemed fit, were all of them sent to war ? The eldest brother was 43 on his draft papers. Thanks for your help.

Draft registration from Canada

I have a draft registration card for my g-g-grandfather - and it appears that although he was born in Rhode Island he was living in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada at the time of the draft. I can't make out a lot of information on the card, but was wondering if anyone knows how it would have worked if he registered from Canada? One of the few things I can make out is a stamp with Hamilton, Ontario on it - so I suspect there were more than a few Americans registering from Hamilton.

Amanda

I am trying to find any information about my father's biological father. On my father's birth certificate, August 1917, he is registered as William Geggis, a private in the 44th Labour Company, Northants Regiment.

I have located William in the 1881 census where he is living in West Ham with his siblings and parents Charles and Kate Geggus, both born in Germany.

There is no mention of him living with the family in the 1901 census where his mother is now found widowed, and I can find no further traces of him anywhere.

I don't think he was married to my father's mother Lily Waterfield, who married David Calder in 1909 and Sydney Lawrence Jordan in 1918. She gave my father for adoption in February 1919 and he was always told by his adoptive mother that there were brothers and sisters who weren't given away by Lily.

I am a beginner at Ancestry.co.uk which might account for my total failure so far, but it would be wonderful to shed some light on a very sad story after all these years.

On WW1 Draft Card- Form A Question #12 reads: "Do you claim exemption from draft?" My great-great Uncle replied "rejected family home." Back in 1917/1918, what do you think this means? I can't really figure out what it means and based on family history I know of nothing that would show there was any trouble. I was guessing it meant he was kicked out of his house, but this day and age and 90 years ago are two totally different times. Any guesses are appreciated. Thanks!

Please help--looking for draft registration card or enlistment papers for William Cullen of Bayonne, NJ. Born in Ireland c.1896, emigrated to the U.S. (don't know when) and resided in Bayonne, NJ. Enlisted in the Army during WWI (perhaps in the same squad as Henry Kunzman, also of Bayonne, NJ). I don't know much about William, my great-grandfather, because he left his family (wife, Elizabeth and three children, George, Vincent, and Bill) when my grandfather (George) was 9, so the family never spoke of William. I recently found out that he was in the Army during WWI and survived. I'm not even sure where he is buried--perhaps in a national cemetery? If anyone has any information about William Cullen during WWI, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you...

WWI Registration for James Edmond Brown

My Grandfather had a birth certificate issued many years after his birth and as supporting evidence it lists a "Registration Certificate War 1" signed or issued by Henry Young on Feb. 24 1893. It would (probably) have been issued in Oklahoma possibly LeFlore county. I am hoping somebody can help me get information contained on this registration card.

Thanks for any help or advice.

Roger

My mother-in-law's brother, Albert Nelson, born in MN on March 10, 1885, should have registered for the WW 1 draft. I don't subscribe to Ancestry so I am limited with what I can find on the Internet. I would like to know if he was married and where he lived at the time. He is listed on the 1910 census as living with his mother in Preston, MN, Fillmore county. Would anyone be able to help find him? Thank you in advance.

Hi,

I am having some difficulty obtaining a WWI DRC. Perhaps someone else can check and see if it can be tracked down.

I was getting a hit for Carmine Puntillo’s DRC, but then it pulled up the image of an entirely different person’s draft card. It was clearly a different name. I tried searching similar names in the Bronx (Punt I think), and the same person's card kept coming up. Very odd. I have not had this happen before.

Here is the information on the man I am interested in:
Name: Carmine Puntillo
City: Bronx
County: Bronx
State: New York
Birthplace: Italy
Birth Date: 6 Mar 1896
Race: Caucasian (White)
Roll: 1753943 DraftBoard: 8

Any help appreciated!

Thanks,
Cheryl
He may have been from the Charleston, SC area.
After the war he married a girl from Minnesota, not certain where the marriage occurred. They moved to Wisconsin. He is listed in the 1930 Eau Claire WI census and is listed as a vet. He had training as a radio technician, and he told stories that he flew "Jennies". Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Draft card help?

I'm trying to find out what happened to my great-grandfather's brother, who according to an old letter died in WW1. I've found out that he was drafted in 1917-1918, but I don't know if he actually was in the army, as he was probably not a US citizen at the time (emigrated from Sweden in 1914 or later).

His name is Smerts PETTAINEN and he was in Silver Bow, Montana. I don't know his birthdate, but it was after 1890, and I don't think there are that many people with his name... According to the letter I mentioned above, he was using another name later on (when he died), but I guess that's a later question to find out... :-)

I would be incredibly grateful if someone could find his draft registration card for me! It's difficult for me to find the info myself as I'm in Sweden.

Lives MN but register in CA????

I a trying to figure out why a 28 year old man who lives in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota would register for the draft in Corcoran, Kings County, California?

The man lists his home address as Minneapolis, Minnesota, gives his occupation as an electrician, but not employed at the time. Someone drew a very large "X" over this entry on the card. Then on the other side of the card It is stamped with the date of 23 May 1917 and where it asks for Precinct, City or County it is stamped "San Francisco, CA".
then in the draftee's own handwriting is - "Register this card in King County, California." He then signs his name and under it puts "Corcoran, Calif."

San Francisco is nowhere near Corcoran and both places are even further away from Minneapolis. He wasn't in California working as he states that he is unemployed.

Any thoughts to this puzzle would be greatly appreciated.
