Military Uniform, Switzerland 1916?

I have a photograph of my husband's grandfather, taken in Villars, Switzerland in 1916. Our understanding was that he was at some point a British subject, but that he may have become stateless. However, what he is wearing in this photograph looks to me like some kind of uniform. Also there's something on his left chest that could be a medal?

My apologies for the poor scan of the photograph which was sent by a technologically-challenged relative! This side of the family is a mystery to us, and any thoughts/ideas on other places I could get information are welcome.

Many thanks,
--Andrea
