returning Canadian soldiers

Hello everyone,

I'm hoping someone can answer this for me:
My Granddad was obviously in WW1 or I wouldn't be posting here. While stationed in Scotland he met & married Grandma. I can't find them returning to Canada, they had to of returned before 1922, we're thinking about 1919 or possibly 1920. Would they have returned on a military ship? Grandma's family immigrated to Canada (1922&23) & I can find them.
Thank you for any responses.
Cordially, Lisa

Norman Dennis DOYLE possibly died in WWI

Hi,

I am looking for my Grandfather's brother Norman Dennis Doyle. I found him on the WWI Medal Rolls Index Cards but that is all. My Grandfather thinks he died in the war. The family was from Birkenshire, England, near Liverpool. I have located his other brother's grandson, David Doyle in Cornwall, England but he doesn't know what happen to him either. There was also a sister named Gladys Doyle who married a Walthew. I don't know what happen to her either. Any information that you might be able to provide me would be greatly appreciated.

Marcia

Looking for WW I Information on Someone

I am trying to do a family tree type thing, and I am searching for WW I information on my grandfather. I really don't have alot of personal information on him except the following.

Name: Charles R. Hamerly
Birthdate: September 10, 1897
Died: February 21, 1945

This is what it reads online on the cemetery website:

ARK PVT 2ND INF 19 DIV WWI

I am assuming that meant he was from Arkansas, but not sure. He lived in Orange, Texas until he passed away. My mother did not talk much about him to me when i was growing up because he died when she was young. Now my teenage son has shown an interest in knowing about the family's past. So, if you can help in any way, I would appreciate it. Maybe information off of a draft card, or anything else. Or a picture of anything to do with him if you can find it. Email me at lynnandmichelle@peoplepc.com or reply on here, either one.

Thanks,
Michelle

I have finally been able ti identify my Great Grandfathers cap badge (previous thread) and it is not Canadian at all! It is the Kings Liverpool Regiment.

His name is Arthur Claude Davies (obtained from marriage certificate)but there seem to be no records of an A C Davies but numerous records for A Davies.

I would appreciate any advice on how I may find any of his records or details of any kind and how to find out which batallion he served in.

Thank you :)

My father was wounded and taken prisoner in Sept 1914. His wounds were treated by German doctors and he was exchanged prisoner of war in Feb 1915. I have tried to find out which prison camp or hospital he was detained in. I contacted the International Red Cross and they provided me with the following information

Places of detention. Prisoner of war in German hands, present in "The Kreigs. Lazaret at St Sauveur, Lille. (according to two lists received on 30-12-1914 and 27-1-1915) from German authorities

Would anyone know if this was a prison camp, or hospital and where exactly it was situated.
I would be grateful for any information

Joe

I am trying to learn more about the war brides of WW1. Thousands of war brides came to Canada after the First World War but they have been virtually forgotten with the passage of time. Was your mother, grandmother, great-grandmother (or any other relative) one of these courageous war brides who married a Canadian soldier of the First World War? Do you have any information or documentation of her journey or what her life was like in Canada? If so, I would love to hear from you.
My name is Michael Henry and I am with the Library of American Broadcasting, a research library at the University of Maryland devoted to the history of radio and television broadcasting.

I am researching the career of Jerry Belcher (1895-1962), who worked in radio from the late 1920's to the mid 1950's. He was from Austin, Texas and served in the 12th Aero Squadron during World War I. I was wondering if anyone might have information regarding the 12th Aero Squadron, its roster, publications.

I appreciate any information anyone can share.
35th Engineers (Transporation Corp)

If anyone is researching the 35th Engineers, let's compare notes.
My Grandfather was inducted 10/4/17 and was sent to the 80th Div., Co F, 320 Infantry at Camp Lee, Va and served in that unit until 3/1/18 when he was transferred to the 35th Engineers. I am not sure if he was already in France at this time. The 35th was formed at Camp Grant,IL. They were then sent to La Rochelle, a seaport on the Atlantic, southwest of Paris. The US was shipping knockdown railroad cars to France and it was the job of the 35th Engineers to assemble them. During this time, they became the Transportation Corp. There is no official government history of this group. The only known published history is a book entitled "But We Built The Cars: A Record Of The Work Done By The 35th Engineers, U.S.A. in France. It was privately printed and authored by Don L. Clement. It is very rare and if anyone has a copy, I would appreciate you contacting me.

I have a book that details the battle history of this company during WWI. Included is a roster of the men in Company A and about 10 names who recieved awards, and why. I am happy to do lookups for anyone who thinks they have a relative in the company. My great granduncle served in this unit and that is how I recieved the book. This also gives addresses of the men for 1939.

WWI Army Service Records - John FOSTER

I am hoping that someone can give me advice on finding army service records for my grandfather John FOSTER, born 1888 in Leeds, Yorkshire. I have already searched in the Ancestry Pension records and army service records, but there is no trace of him. The only bit of information that I have found is his WWI Medal Rolls Index card. This gives his regimental number as T-25737. His rank was Driver in the Army Service Corps. I know that he served for the duration of the war and was discharged in 1919. As his army records do not appear on Ancestry, am I to assume that they were amongst the ones burnt during the bombing of WWII? If this is the case, are there any other sources (RASC regimental records??) from which I may be able to find out what my grandfather did and where he was posted to during WWI? I would be very grateful for any help with this problem. Thank you.

Elizabeth Barrett Boyle Mann 1886 - (1930-1937) WWI Vet

I am looking for any information on Elizabeth I. Barrett Boyle Mann. She was born Constance Barrett around 1886 in New York. She married a man named Boyle and had two children Concetta Boyle (born 1909) and James Boyle (born 1913). Her name during the war would have been Elizabeth Barrett Boyle. Mr. Boyle passed and she remarried Francis Mann around 1920. They had four kids Francis Mann Jr. (born 1922), Joseph Mann (born 1923), Catherine Mann (born 1925) and Alvin Mann (born 1926). Husband Francis was a soldier and WWI vet with the First Division based in Brooklyn. Elizabeth was listed as a WWI vet in the 1930 Federal Census. On son Alvin's Social Security App her first name is poorly written but looks like Constance with the middle intial clearly I. Elizabeth died between 1930 and 1937. That is all I have but I am looking for anything in Elizabeth's past, her parents, origin of birth, place of burial, anything. Thank you.

Medal Index Cards

I've just discovered the index card for my Great Great Grandfather Richard Holden who served in The Great War in the East Lancs Regiment. It shows that he was awarded a Victory and a British medal. Next to this it then says:-

Retd (1743.K.R.1912) 8149/adt

So i have worked out that his medals were returned and the code in brackets represents the King's Regualtions regarding claiming the medals within 10 years etc. I am also led to believe that adt means that the medals were returned for adjustment. The only thing I am now struggling with is if there is a meaning behind '8149'?

Also, I know that he was killed in action however there is no mention of this, does anybody know why it wasn't recorded on the card?

Any help would be much appreciated, thanks.

If someone has this book, would you please look up and see if you can find a General Order giving my grand uncle a Star Citation? I've tried to get a copy of the book from the library system in New York, but none of the libraries can find it. My grand uncles name is Caro Everett Freeman, he was a sergeant with the First Division when he was killed a month before the armistice was signed. His body was never recovered, and he has his name on the "Tables of the Missing" at the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery in France. I recently found out that he had been awarded a Star Citation, but I don't know what he had done. I can provide some more information if necessary.

I have requested information from the National Personnel Records Center, but they didn't have anything on the award (or any others for that matter).

Thank you,

David Young

I have recently found the medal index card of my Gt grand uncle Frederick WATSON. It indicates the award of the 1915 Star, The British War Medal and The Victory Medal. Under remarks appears an abbreviation D. O. W.
I know Frederick died on 31/07/1915 of wounds received and the usual abbreviation to indicate that would normally be K. I. A.
Does anyone know what D. O. W. stands for?
I have looked at various sites (including National Archives) which help with abbreviations, but I cannot find this one. It seems to be a dress uniform of some kind and of a light color material.

Thanks for any help.

Susan M.

William Keefe, Pittsburg, PA, died 1918

I am trying to find information on the death of my great-uncle William Keefe of Pittsburg, PA. My father said he died in 1919 and was a soldier. My father was only 8 at the time and his memory was hazy about the information. I have been unable to find anything on William's death. I do have his date of birth and his parents names. Any ideas on how or where I can start to locate this information?

William was born in 1899 in Pittsburg, PA. His parents were Margaret Byrne and William Keefe, Sr. They lived in Pittsburg all of their married life. William Sr., died before 1910 and therefore Margaret Byrne Keefe would probably have been listed as William's next of kin.

Thank you.

Kim
Mesa, AZ

I am researching my grandfather Joseph Charles Ernest Moore. On searching on Ancestry I have found a Joseph C E Moore with a record in the Medal Rolls Index Card 1914 - 1920 section. On looking at the original image it doesn't give any information eg dob to identify him as my grandfather.

Does anyone know how I can do that?

Also I have checked the National Archives Site which has the same card details but charge £3.50 to obtain the image file.

Does anyone know if I would get more details by paying the National Archives £3.50 than what is available on the Ancestry Image file in particular would I get details such as date of birth?

According to relatives JCE Moore was in the cavalry in the 1st World War so I obviously need details to confirm if this is the same person.

World War I ended Nov. 1918, did any of the large number of men drafted on 12 Sept. 1918 complete their training camp assignments, and continue to active duty? How long did it take to complete training at World War I training camps? I have listed Army and National Guard training camps that I found below:

National Army cantonments built were Custer (Battle Creek, Michigan), Devens (Ayer, Massachusetts), Dodge (Des Moines, Iowa), Dix (Wrightstown, New Jersey), Funston (Fort Riley, Kansas), Gordon (Atlanta, Georgia), Grant (Rockford, Illinois), Jackson (Columbia, South Carolina), Lee (Petersburg, Virginia), Lewis (American Lake, Washington), Meade (Admiral, Maryland), Pike (Little Rock, Arkansas), Sherman (Chillicothe, Ohio), Taylor (Louisville, Kentucky), Travis (San Antonio, Texas), and Upton (Yaphank, Long Island, New York).

National Guard camps built were Beauregard (Alexandria, Louisiana), Bowie (Fort Worth, Texas), Cody (Deming, New Mexico), Doniphan (Fort Sill, Oklahoma), Frémont (Palo Alto, California), Green (Charlotte, North Carolina), Hancock (Augusta, Georgia), Kearney (Linda Vista, California), Logan (Houston, Texas), MacArthur (Waco, Texas), McClellan (Anniston, Alabama), Sevier (Greenville, South Carolina), Shelby (Hattiesburg, Mississippi), Sheridan (Montgomery, Alabama), Wadsworth (Spartanburg, South Carolina), and Wheeler (Macon, Georgia).

Military Uniform, Switzerland 1916?

I have a photograph of my husband's grandfather, taken in Villars, Switzerland in 1916. Our understanding was that he was at some point a British subject, but that he may have become stateless. However, what he is wearing in this photograph looks to me like some kind of uniform. Also there's something on his left chest that could be a medal?

My apologies for the poor scan of the photograph which was sent by a technologically-challenged relative! This side of the family is a mystery to us, and any thoughts/ideas on other places I could get information are welcome.

Photo is here: http://preview.tinyurl.com/6juftv

Many thanks,
--Andrea

Hi Everyone,

I'm looking for the death of Herbert Elliott, born abt 1885. He was a Private in the 20th Hussars as of 16th May, 1918 in Darlington, Durham when he was married to Evelyn Young. His father is listed as Joesph Elliott, deceased on the marriage certificate.

By 3rd July, 1920, Evelyn is a widow and immigrated to the U.S. with her daughter. And family stories say that Herbert Elliott died in WWI. However, I've been unable to find his death in the GRO or on the Commonwealth War Casualty Commission website. I also wrote to the CWCC and they also could not find his death. I have also looked in the GRO and have been unable to find a death that matches his.

I did find a WWI medal for him on Ancestry:

Medal card of Elliott, Herbert
Corps Regiment No Rank
Hussars 4988 Private
Corps of Hussars 47672 Private

Does anyone know where else to look for war records to indicate where Herbert Elliott died and is buried?

Thank you!
Help with Where to Start with Military Records

I'm new to the military records and I'm someone can help me.
I’m related to two individuals who served in World War I. One of the men was killed in action (Andrew Grodzicki from Ivanhoe, MN). His picture appears in a book on soldiers killed, but I’m not sure how to get more information on him (e.g., date of death, manner of death, where he was killed and where he was buried). Does anyone know if this type of information would exist? I cannot find his draft card on ancestry.

I’m also related to a man, named Stanley Grodzicki (Detroit, MI) who survived the war, but died in 1923. Family members always said he was injured by mustard gas and died of complications to mustard gas (his death certificate states Pulmonary TB). But I cannot find any proof he was in the war. With him, I contacted the National Personnel Records Center and they sent me the wrong Stanley Grodzicki data (the record was a St. Louis Grodzicki). I do have his draft card from ancestry.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Chip

It seems he went to England to join up in the Royal Navy.

Below is the information on his death from the Commonwealth Graves Commission.

Name: SMITH, GUY
Initials: G
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Engine Room Artificer 4th Class
Regiment/Service: Royal Navy
Unit Text: H.M.S. "Begonia."
Date of Death: 06/10/1917
Service No: M/25856
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: 25.
Memorial: PORTSMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL

I would really like to find his Naval Record to find out about his Naval service as well as more about his wife and child. I would appreciate any help to find where I can get his service record.

Thank you

I'd like to find out about William Wroath, my grandmother's great uncle (he's quite far off!) who served in the navy during the First World War as an Able Seaman. All I know is that he was on a ship that was either presumed sunk by mine or torpedoed by a german U Boat- I'm not sure which, different websites confuse me. The ship was the SS Coath from Penzance and it sunk of the coast of Beachy Head on either 12 or 13 December 1916 drowning all the crew. William was 23 and left behind a wife and 3 year old son. I'd love to know more, if anyone knows, about the SS Coath or William's career if that's possible to find out.
Cheers,
R

combat or non-combat?

I'm trying to ascertain whether my great uncle saw combat in WWI and, if so, whether he might have been exposed to gas. Looking at his war records and applying my limited knowledge of WWI, my guess is no. His records show the following:

Comment: Ind 6/29/18 pvt, 154 Dep Brig; QMC Camp Johnston Fla. 8/15/18; 8 Det Admin Lab Co 9/15/18; 154 Dep Brig 2/24/19, Hon disch 3/12/19, Overseas 9/27/18 to 2/9/19

I'm basing my guess on the following:

* most battles were over by the end of September 1918
* I can't imagine they'd have put him on the front lines immediately upon arrival
* I'm no expert but it looks like he was in an administrative position, not combat
* I assume his record would show a Purple Heart if he had been gassed

Can anyone point me in a direction that might help me confirm this? I'm assuming there's some documentation that shows where and when his unit was deployed but I don't know what that documentation would be.

Many thanks,

Walter

WW1 Alfred George Harveywells

Hi all

I am new to doing family research and have only just begun, so I apologise if what I am about to ask is totaly stupid.

I have found a Medal Index Card for my Great Grandfather Alfred George HArveywells for WW1. I have been able to decipher the information on the card which is as follows:
RFA (Royal Field Artillery)Entered Theatre of War 28.11.1915 in France.
His Reg No was L/28722 Rank DOR
He received Three medals, Victory, BWM and 1915 Star
I know he survived the war and went on to have 7 children!

I am unable to go to Kew (due to distance and ill health) to visit the Rolls but have been advised since this was the MIC type with a rubber stamp no more info would be held regarding my Great Grandfather.

So I was wondering if anyone could help me with the following questions:

1. Does Rank DOR stand for Driver?
2. I understand that the L prefix on his reg no. was to indicate a localy raised unit of the RFA, is there any way I can find out what unit? He lived in Mile End Old Town around the time of the war.I understand that with that information I would be able to get an idea of what battles he took part in which I think would be most interesting and possibly even war diaries from his unit.
3. Does his Reg no indicate any other information such as approximate time of enlistment?

Thank you in advance for any help believe me it is most appreciated.

E

Thomas Carr

Two brothers went off to fight for their country during the Great War 1914 to 1918. They were Thomas and William Carr born in Newham Northumberland in 1890 and 1895 respectively, to John and Helen Carr.

I know that William was in the Northumberland Fusiliers and enlisted for service at Wooler Northumberland. He was Private Carr Number 1610 and served his country in France at the 2nd battle for Ypres and at the start of the Somme offensive. William was decorated 15 times and was killed on the 16th of June 1916. His name appears amongst the many that lost their lives in this awful war on the Menin gate at Ypres and on a plaque in Chillingham church near his hometown. http://www.newmp.org.uk/detail.php?contentId=6805

Unfortunately I do not know what happened to Thomas. All I do know is that Thomas’s name is on the same plaque, but instead of the letters N.F. (Northumberland Fusiliers) the letters Y.N.H. appear after his name.

I found most of William’s details on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission Website, only as I new what regiment he was in.

I do not know what Y.N.H. stands for. I would dearly like to know what became of Thomas. Does anyone know?

Frances E. Mann 16th Infantry, G Company

I am looking for any information on the WWI exploits of Frances E. Mann. Frank was born in 1879 in Elgin, IL and joined the Army around 1910 when he was 30 years old. The cemetery in Long Island where he is buried said they had little except that he may have served in G Company of the 16th Infantry, First Division. Which makes sense because he settled in Brooklyn after the war (the First Division was stationed at Ft. Hamilton and Ft. Jay after the war, both places in Brooklyn) Frank separated from the Army on 9/25/1930 with the rank of Sergeant. I have sent for his military records but they're finding it hard to find anything after the fire of 1973. All of my info comes from the Long Island National Cemetery. Nice folks. Any information or advice is greatly appreciated.

My grandfather Jay Horton's headstone says that he was a member of the 310th Sanitary then there is the abreviation TN. Since he is buried in Spencer Mills (Township )Cemetery he must have went with this unit from michigan and that the tn stood for train. There is a 310th Sanitary Tain who were known as the Polar Bears out of Detroit and were stationed in Russia. I was looking for perhaps a roster and really anything that i can find out about the 310th sanitary train.

I believe I have found my Great Grandfather in a book called "Camp Travis and its Part in the World War" printed in 1918. I came upon page 192 and found Battery E 54th Field Artillery. There I found his name listed as Willie Woods. I was told that my Great Grandfather had joined the army late in the war and by the time his his bunch was getting geared up to go the war ended. This would coincide with the bunch from Camp Travis who did not make it to the Battle Front known as the Cactus Division.

Does anyone know how I might obtain WW1 records for my Great Grandfather?

Thanks,

Ronald Woods Jr.

Greetings,

I am researching my wife's family. One of her relatives was a PFC named Ignatius Rzoska (1896-1918). I have tried contacting the NARA but they say his records no longer exist, destroyed in their fire.

We know his unit. He served in the 77th Division, 306th Infantry, Company C of the US Army. If possible I'd like to have a sense of which battles he was involved with, and where precisely (other than "FRANCE") he was killed. He died September 6, 1918. I found one site with information on his company, but it concerns a campaign that began in October 1918 (i.e., after he died).

I would be grateful for any leads for his unit's activities from April 1917 until his death in Septembe 1918.

Sincerely,

Chris Brennan
cristoir@optonline.net

Greetings,

At the end of the US Civil War several compilations were produced that listed the various units that fought in the war, a list of the campaigns in which they fought and the men who did the fighting. Does such a resource exist for the first world war?

The reason I ask is I am researching my wife's family. One of her relatives was a PFC named Ignatius Rzoska (1896-1918). I have tried contacting the NARA but they say there are no such records and believe they were destroyed in their fire.

We know his unit.
Can anyone help me please

Hi all

I am new to doing family research and have only just begun, so I apologise if what I am about to ask is totaly stupid.

I have found a Medal Index Card for my Great Grandfather Alfred George HArveywells for WW1. I have been able to decipher some of the information on the card which is as follows:

Thank you in advance for any help believe me it is most appreciated even if it does not relate to the questions I have asked.

Erika

Trying to track my Grandads war. He was with the York and Lancs when he enlisted in 1915 but transferred to the reserve from the Durham Light infantry in 1919. I am trying to find out where his regiment was and where they fought on the western front. Can anyone advise how I might start please ? His name was Charles George Kerridge and regt no. 93618. Thank you Leigh

Help with grandmother's brother - Medal Index Card

Malcolm Martin served with the Gordon Highlanders
His reg# is 3/5991. I have since learned that the prefix 3 may have indicated that he was a reserve and may have been called up very early in the war. He was awarded the Silver War Badge after discharge in June of 1915. I cannot tell from the MIC what part of the Gordons he served with. (2nd or 4th). My grandmother (who has been gone since the 1970's) told me he was gassed. His death record indicates that he died of Tuberculosis in Stornoway Scotland in 1922 at the age of 26. Is this something that you may have suffered from as a result of gassing? Does anyone know what the Gordon's were doing during this period? He was discharged in June 1915 but may have been gassed and had treatment much earlier. When was poison gas first used against the Gordons?
I would like to know if there are any records that the Gordons may have kept that recorded names of soldiers in specific battalions or regiments.
I don't think his records survived the blitz and I can find no pension records. If he received the SWB I thought it likely that there would be pension records.
Were there outbreaks of Tuberculosis in the Hebrides at this time? Was it common for healthy men in their twenties to die of TB?
Any help or leads will be appreciated.
