Civilian Crew Member Buried at Sea Information

I am trying to find information on a great-grandmother, Norma Schmitz. She was born in Germany and married a G.I. (WWI), John William Conner. It looks like they had one child in Germany, and she got a job as a cook aboard a ship (do not know the name) to immigrate to the U.S.A. while pregnant. She died in child birth aboard the ship (1917), and was buried at sea.
How do I find information on her, I have no date of birth, I don't know what ship she would be on. The information I have is just word of mouth passed down, so I'm hoping it is accurate.
Please help!
